It has been 2 years since the Greenes released a major recording.  Though the reasons for the delay are very understandable, fans like me have been anxiously awaiting a new recording from the Greenes.  While I wouldn’t call this a true masterpiece, it definitely is something I will find myself listening to more than just a couple of times.  And too, I must say that the vocal blend of the “new” group is superb.  They sound like they have sung together for years!

Starting things off is the medium/uptempo title song, “GOD IS A GOOD GOD”, which reminds us that “today is a good day, to give our good God praise”.  The song features Tony and TaRanda and leads into a very good recreation of a Greenes classic (their first #1 song over a dozen years ago) “WHEN I KNELT, THE BLOOD FELL” which superbly allows TaRanda to truly shine.

Penned by Phil Cross, the energetic “YES, OH YES” is done in typical Greenes fare.  Though somewhat repetitive in nature, it’s a song that will echo in your head all day long, which is always a good sign of a good radio tune.

Brad Hudson gets a big feature with the power ballad, “WITHOUT THE CROSS”, which was written by Jeff Ferguson and Rebecca Peck and reminds us that, “we would be lost, without the cross.”

Recorded by the Greenes about 14 years ago, featuring Tony, “THEY FOUND HIM” was done up anew and done quite well, though I am still partial to the original version.
The Greenes piano player, John Jeffreys, gets a chance to sing and does a nice job on the Donny Henderson penned, “ALLELUIA” before TaRanda steps back up in the spotlight to sing another Greenes classic, “THE BLOOD COVERED IT ALL”.  The Greenes revive another tune they recorded about 15 years ago called, “MARCH THROUGH THE WATER” which features Tony and TaRanda.

Brad does a remarkable job on the Phil Cross penned, “GOD DID” and this is probably the most memorable performance on the entire recording.  Tony closes things out with his humble rendition of the gospel classic, “I CAN’T EVEN WALK”.

I am a huge fan of the Greenes, as they are one of the few groups I would actually break my neck to try to go see in concert, but I must admit that wouldn’t consider this to be their greatest work.  It seems obvious to me that there was less time spent in the production efforts on this recording than their previous work, “Whosoever Believes.”  It seems to lack the overall quality that most mainline releases usually have.  My hunch is this recording started out as a table project, but ended up being a mainline release.  Also, the sequence of the songs is completely different than what is actually listed.  It starts and ends correctly, but it is all jumbled up in between.  I will say the cover work is quite striking as well.  No overlooking this CD in a sea of CDs on a bookstore shelf.  All in all though, this is a very good recording but not one I would exactly call remarkably memorable.

All I can say is that Taranda Greene is the BEST female vocalist in SGM. I hate it so badly that she is not truly recognized for her incredible talent.

I love the new CD and have played over and over. I agree with Dan Graf Daisy is the BEST female vocalist and one of the very nicest people you would ever want to meet. I just hope and pray that she does get the acclaim she deserves.

The Greenes are such a powerful group and I consider them my personal friends...I think this project is great and it's available in so many stores...I'm happy to see their music so available to the public.

This is a happy, fun album that has had a heavy rotation in my cd players. I write for the Greenes and the two songs they did of mine, "God is a Good God", with Reba Rambo/McGuire co-writing, and "Without the Cross", with Rebecca Peck co-writing, are both done beautifully. You nailed "Without the Cross", Brad. I love the beautiful ending and "God is a Good God makes me smile...it feels great! Thank you, Greenes, for a powerful project.
