I grew up listening to and loving the music of Jerry Goff and Little Jan in their respective groups, Thrasher Brothers and Jerry & The Goffs (Jerry) and Wendy Bagwell & The Sunliters (Little Jan). Naturally after they were married, they went into the studio to record a new CD together, aptly titled, "New Love" and now that the two have become one, I can hear them both on one recording.
The classic hymn, "COME AND DINE" starts things off and features Jerry on the trumpet and both he and Little Jan on the verses before things move on as Jerry turns in the solos on "A BIRTH I CAN'T FORGET" (aka-"Second Birth), which was also a big song for the Comptons a few years back and the song fits Jerry like a glove.
Little Jan slows things down quite a bit with her arrangement of the old hymn, "IS NOT THIS THE LAND OF BEULAH" before Jerry turns in an excellent performance on his self penned tune, "SUNDAY'S A-COMING", which is a big jubilant song and could be a big hit if the right group got a hold of it.
Little Jan does a pretty good job spitting out the words to the Johnny Cash novelty classic, "I'VE BEEN EVERYWHERE" before Jerry sings the oldie goldie, "NO CABINS IN GLORY".
The next three songs "JUST WAIT 'TIL THEY ROLL THE STONE AWAY", "I'M GONNA KEEP GOING" and "OLD SHIP OF ZION" were all written by and feature Jerry and are all very good songs.
While this recording is good, the highlight though is Little Jan's solo of "LOVE GREW WHERE THE BLOOD FELL". Though not the greatest as far as quality is concerned, as it was recorded on a tape recorder during a regular church service at Little Jan's home church and features her with her church choir and band. You hear Little Jan like you probably never heard her before, as by the time the song is done, she literally starts preaching. I never like to use this word in a review, because many times it's subjective to a persons opinion, but since this is MY review, I'll say it…it's nothing short of anointed. Simply put, it's an experience and worth the price of the CD just for this one song.
The overall quality of the recording is not great, but definitely adequate. The tracks are pretty basic, and there is a lack of consistency in the quality of the tracks from one song to another, but it's still a good recording. My biggest gripe though is Little Jan appears to be more of a "special guest" on this recording that an equal partner. I've always loved Jerry's singing, but I'm a bigger fan of Little Jan and I personally would have liked to hear her on a few more songs. But, all in all for that it's worth, this is a good recording by two of Southern Gospel's classiest icons.
Personal Favs: A BIRTH I CAN'T FORGET; IS NOT THIS THE LAND OF BEULAH; SUNDAY'S A-COMING; I'M GONNA KEEP GOING; LOVE GREW WHERE THE BLOOD FELL
