The Death of a Quantrell Raider
![]() Song: I Should Have Been Crucified Sacred to the memory of Willie Lee. "My mind was set ablaze when I read this story in Billy Sunday's sermon. It illustrated "Calvary" and all that it means to me. The whole thing came together in my mind one afternoon as I sat in the seats of the auditorium of Hammond High School in Hammond, Indiana, waiting for sound checks to be made in preparation for the evening's concert. I wrote the lyrics then and there, and in my mind I had a melody for it. The Orrells, A Southern Gospel group that I was singing with, were the first to record it. The Benson Company published it and it was soon being recorded by many other groups." "I Should Have Been Crucified" is one of approximately 300 songs written by Gordon Jensen, many of which are favorites and have been heard and sung by millions in this and several other nations. Reflection: In his song Gordon takes us, in our sinful condition, to the crucifixion scene and Christ's substitutionary death. One particular line, "I should have hung on the cross in disgrace, but Jesus, God's Son took my place," is deeply meaningful, and like the whole of the song, couched in the Scriptures. The Bible tells us that when Jesus went to the cross for you and me, He despised the shame. Reader Comments
Mr. Terry-
An outstanding article. Many thanks. I have been singing SGM for over 40 years; and during my lifetime, have always thought that Gordon Jensen's name should be included with those of the great songwriters; the Gaithers, Dottie Rambo, Rusty Goodman, Neil Enloe, Rodney Griffin, Phil Cross, Dianne Wilkinson, etc. He has written not just alot of songs, but alot of truly fantastic songs. His song "Come Into The Ark" may be the very best pure gospel song I've ever heard. His song "He Only Sees the Blood" is a tremendous song of the substitutionary work of Christ. His song "Jesus Will Outshine Them All" was my mother's favorite. "It Made News In Heaven" is yet another classic. I have several of the Orrells records, and treasure them. I have spoken with Mr. Jensen several times on the phone, and he is a humble gentleman, grateful for how the Lord is still using the songs he has written. Thanks for the gospel illustration as well, and the story behind this well-known song.

What a wonderful tribute to a tremendously gifted man of God. My parents, sister and I sang for about 15 years, recording many albums all full of Gordon Jensen's songs. The very first being, "He's Changiong Me". Many others I remember with great fondness like, "goldmine" (which my sister and I sng while very young), A Small Wooden Bridge", It's Jesus I really want to see" (which my dear father, who was blind, sang and we played it at his funeral), and "The Glove". There are so many, too many to mention. There seems to be a shortage of godly songwriters out there who write songs steeped in scripture like Gordon Jensen. I am deeply grateful for his ministry.

I have stage 4 cancer. I 'googled' Gordon Jenson's name looking for somewhere to buy his music because from the time I was first saved it had so totally affected and encouraged me by it's gospel simplicity that it litrally became the example for how I learned how to walk with God...as a "glove available whenever God chose to use me"...instead of as one who sought to be a 'minister FOR God'. That song became the basis for my entire life with the Lord. I had played his records so much I had literally worn them till they could no longer even be played.
The Love this man has for God, seen so clearly in how he writes about Him, inspired me to a lifetime of being willing to be nothing more nor less than a "glove" in the Master's Hand, whenever He chose to use me. We recently spoke and his words inspired me to go on fighting the good fight, not till "I" think my time is up, but till the Father says it is. He even personally sent me some of his specific music that I'd been trying for years to find. Gordon is a man of God, such as comes along very rarely...a man who totally seeks to live what he teaches. Others may sing his words in ways that will bless, but they will always be the words of Gordon Jensen. He is one brother I look forward to meeting in heaven one day when our work here is done.

Gordon: This is just MorningGlorytoo (Pat) dropping by to let you know the Father is still keeping me...through chemo's mountain of side effects and many other personal trials. I will never forget your gift...of words...of music....and of the Father's never-ending love displayed so clearly in all you do and say. When I had all but given up and was preparing for my funeral, your words brought back the Lord's life and peace to my heart and I am still 'trucking on' for Him. Blessings on all God calls you to do for Him always.
