Sondra Burnett - Family Reunion

Sondra Burnett is a delightful individual whose bubbly personality seems to shine through each lyric that she sings. Coming off the success of her "breakout" recording, Sondra takes somewhat of a different direction here as she takes a slightly softer approach to each song. But don't worry. . . there still a lot of energy to enjoy!
The down home feel of "FAMILY REUNION" sets the stage for the recording and really shows off Sondra's fun, down to earth appeal. The song leads perfectly into the uptempo, "GONNA BE A WONDERFUL TIME", which also suits Sondra extremely well. Written by Jason Clark, I love the music track on this song as well.
Things slow down a bit for "THE OLD ACCOUNT", which features a nice country track, as does the Rambo classic, "IF THAT ISN'T LOVE". Both songs seem to fit Sondra like a glove.
Written in part by Sondra, the funk feel of "HE'S ALIVE" gives Sondra a moment to have a bit of fun, and the song closes with about a minute and half of funk music before it fades out.
Penned by Jeff Steele and Ricky Atkinson, Sondra gives an exceptional performance on "GIVE GOD YOUR STORM", which had previously been recorded by the Florida Boys about 6 years ago. Keeping things in power-mode, Sondra turns in an excellent performance on her self-penned composition titled, "HE CAME TO ME". Starting off tenderly and quietly, the song gathers strength as it nears a big finish, but quickly falls back to the way it began, tenderly and quietly and makes for a very dramatic song.
With fiddle and steel guitar, Sondra sings the reflective "ONE DAY CLOSER", while the Dee Gaskin penned, "I JUST WANT TO THANK YOU" trades the steel for the dobro as Sondra sings, "Lord I just want to thank you, for all you have done. . . " before she belts out the lyrics to Michael W. Smith's Praise & Worship classic, "ABOVE ALL".
Before ending a 6-song streak of slow tunes, Sondra sings the heartfelt, "SCARS THAT MEND" before closing out the recording with the upbeat, soulful tune entitled, "EVERYTHING I WANTED" as Sondra leaves things on a high and feeling good!
I love the cover concept of this recording. It has the look of a vintage photo album complete with old photos and mementos. The uptempo tunes (though sparse) really seem to show off Sondra's spunk, while the slower songs (while plentiful) seem to really allow us a peak into her heart as she seems to deliver very heartfelt performances on each of them. I am still quite partial to her previous release, but in contrast with her last effort, which featured Sondra more in an uptempo power mode, this newest recording shows off a softer side to Sondra and proves she can just about sing anything.
