I've never hidden the fact that I have always been a huge admirer of the music of Rusty Goodman. His music, both vocal and written, has made such an enormous impact on me. Rusty was the consummate singer who could sing just about anything. This latest release in the Gospel Legacy Series from New Haven Records features songs from Rusty's solo albums "The Singer" (1975), "You Make it Rain for Me" (1978), "Escape to the Light" (1981) and "Family Band" (1984) and are some of the finest vocal performances ever laid to track. (At least I think so anyway!)

The recording starts off with a seldom-heard version of Rusty's classic, "WHO AM I?" which features a duet with Rusty and his daughter Tanya Goodman-Sykes, which was put together after his death in 1990. This version was released as part of a Homecoming Tribute recording about a dozen years ago.
Other songs on this recording include the smooth sounding "ALL I EVER HAVE TO BE", the novelty tune, "THE WOODSMAN", "JESUS KNOWS ALL ABOUT IT", "SOMEONE TO CARE", "YOU MAKE IT RAIN FOR ME" (one of my all time favorite songs), "I WASN'T THERE", "I AM", "BECAUSE OF CALVARY" and the autobiographical tune, "FAMILY BAND". Also included are the classic tunes, "LEAVIN' IN MY MIND" and "HOW MUCH MORE"; with the latter tune featuring a duet with Larry Gatlin. The recording closes very appropriately and effectively with the reflective song entitled, "MIZPAH".

Overall, I think this is one of the best representations ever offered as a tribute to an individual's artistry. Per usual for me, I still think a few songs are missing such as "Remember Me", "Small Lonely Hill", "It's a Miracle" (Rusty's last chart song) and "Heartmender", but I am very pleased overall with what is given here.

I agree with you about those missing songs. I haven't yet bought this project, but I have listened to it. My favorite also is "You Make It Rain for Me". I love that song. This cd has very great song selection.

James Hales's avatar The reason those songs were missing was because this recording focused on his solo albums...those were released on group albums. I too wish songs like "Don't Let Me See", "It Must Have Rained in Heaven", etc. were included, but since this focused solely on his solo recorded albums, I understood why those songs were not included.
