Woody Wright– Country Side
![]() Producer: Woody Wright If there was a title that aptly described a recording, “Country Side” by Woody Wright fits perfectly. This is Southern Gospel with a major country sound. I feel that this recording is a notch above Woody's last recording and as before, it features a few songs previously recorded by other artists, but also features several new tunes penned by Woody. I love how Woody pens a lyric. I noted in my last review that he was an eccentric songwriter, and the more I hear his music, the more I believe that! I mean, only Woody can get by with writing, “I was in trouble man, I was a mess, like the eastern side of a mule headed west…” on the song, “EVER SINCE I GAVE MY HEART TO YOU”. But seriously, Woody really has a knack for writing songs that tell about daily life and words them in certain ways that really make you think. Along with the aforementioned song, the tunes “DO A LITTLE DYING EVERY DAY”, “HE'S A MIGHTY GOOD FRIEND” and “COMFORT CREEK” have all been previously recorded by other artists and Woody adds his own special touch to these songs. Some great story songs are found in “HEAVEN'S BELL” and the thought provoking, “ACRE OF GRACE” (I REALLY like this song a lot!). What really connects with me with this song is how Woody brings the gospel of Grace down to layman's terms. Those that can't quite conceive the wonderful work of Grace may find their answer with this song. I also love the encouraging message found in the song, “HELP IS ON THE WAY (BEFORE YOU PRAY)” Woody also has a knack for writing some really interesting novelty tunes like the rockabilly sounding “BE MY DOCTOR” and the cute, “HILLBILLY HAIRCUT”. I just love the line, “I may look like C.M.T, but I'm sure into G.O.D., I got a hillbilly haircut and the Holy Ghost in my heart.” Only Woody… Other songs include “THERE'S A LOT I WANT TO DO”, “GOD FEARIN' FAMILY MAN” and “IT WON'T LAST LONG” , and they all showcase great lyrics, with that country sound that is so evident throughout the recording. I really liked what I found in this recording. It's sound is country to core, but the messages in some of these cut right to the heart. Along with that, there are several moments of lightheartedness that in many ways, is so characteristic of Woody's writings. One song will have you laughing, while the next will leave you deep in thought. It took me awhile, but I think I finally “get” Woody and what he is trying to say in his music. If you've not taken the time to listen to his music, take a trip out to the “Country Side” with Woody Wright. Personal Favs: HEAVEN'S BELL; EVER SINCE I GAVE MY HEART TO YOU; HELP IS ON THE WAY (BEFORE YOU PRAY): ACRE OF GRACE; HILLBILLY HAIRCUT Reader Comments
James,
First of all, I'm a huge Woody Wright fan, and I couldn't agree with you more about his unique style of songwriting and/or story telling. There's just nobody like Woody. Your comments have piqued my interested, and this project has escalated high on my list of soon purchases. Your review makes me feel like I've already heard a little bit of it. And I can't wait for more. Good job, James!!!
