Since I began writing these monthly articles, I have received many request for information about how to study the craft of songwriting. I have mentioned in some earlier articles that the Ben Speer's Stamps Baxter School, and the Steve Hurst School of Music, both offer songwriting instruction in their summer programs, in Nashville TN. I have the privilege of teaching in both of these schools, and would love to work with any of you on a one on one basis. But if a summer trip to Nashville TN is not in your budget, there are other resources available to you.

A quick trip to http://www.amazon.com turned up these following book titles that are currently available.

1 HOW TO WRITE SONGS ON GUITAR
2 SONGWRITING FOR DUMMIES
3 MELODY IN SONGWRITING
4 THE CRAFT AND BUSINESS OF SONGWRITING
5 SONGWRITERS ON SONGWRITING
6 SONGWRITING: THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO RHYMING
7 HOW TO TURN CHORDS INTO GREAT SONGS
8 88 SONGWRITING WRONGS AND HOW TO RIGHT THEM
9 COMPLETE IDIOT'S GUIDE TO SONGWRITING
10 SONGWRITING: A COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE CRAFT
11 LEARN SONGWRITING
12 SONGWRITING: A GUIDE TO THE CREATIVE PROCESS
13 TUNESMITH: INSIDE THE ART OF SONGWRITING
14 THE CRAFT OF LYRIC WRITING
15 THE COMPLETE HANDBOOK OF SONGWRITING

All of these titles have received at least a four star customer satisfaction rating. But these are only a few. There are over 100 titles available. Many of them have a four star rating or better. I would encourage you to check out this wealth of information that is available to you. All of these titles were found by typing in the word Songwriting in the search window. If you type in the word Songwriter, there are even more options.

I did make one more quick check of book titles at http://www.ebay.com . I found 65 titles listed there under by typing the word SONGWRITER in the search window.

Back in the 1980's I bought the book, The Craft Of Lyric Writing - by Sheila Davis. It forever changed the way I wrote songs. I took the information that I found there and put it into practice. Very soon my songs started sounding better, and I began to get them recorded on a regular basis. I'm not saying that you must get that book, but get something that will help make a difference in your writing. I am sure there is a book out there that can help you write better songs than you are writing now.

I hope that you will take advantage of the materials available to you and start turning good songs into hit songs.

Until next time, keep on writing!
Daryl Williams

Dear Daryl...
I hope the last comment was only kidding. Anyway...I have read 4 of the books on your list and I must say ... they have changed my whole mentality on songwriting. I believe if more writers would be well read and learn from the resources available, they would go leaps and bounds in their writing. Also...in writing we can be filled with book knowledge and be void of a Spirit filled walk. If we are going to write great material, we must be filled with the Spirit of God. This coupled with knowledge and of course gifting and annointing makes our songs the best they can be. Unless the Lord builds the house, we labor in vain. Of all the writers in our industry, you are truly annointed. Blessings to you Bro.

Sincerely, In Christ ... Steven Cheney

Sally, you are being a little hard on poor ole Daryl. He hasn't written a HIT song in about a month, so he's probably conserving his brainpower. LOL
I'm wondering if any of those books have pictures??? LOL

Deon,
I was seriously considering A Complete Idiot's Guide to Songwriting - that's about my speed...
Has it already been a month??? Maybe he's not feeling well - or it could be that ole wife o' his.

If anyone wants to hear a sample of some great songwriting, they need to get your new CD. Almost
all of the songs were written by you and they are
excellent (but then I may be just a little bit partial). I have all of your CD's and they just
keep getting better and better. This one is the best. Love ya lots. Judi Shannon
