Dan Adkins Passes Away

(Goodlettsville, TN) - Evangelist/Singer/Songwriter Dan Adkins passed away this morning while in California holding a revival service.

Mr. Adkins is an alumnus of the Eddie Crook Company where he served as National A&R Director.

Visitation will be from 2:00-4:00pm and 6:00-8:00pm on Tuesday, August 24th at the Richardson-Davis Funeral Home in Galion, Ohio. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 25th at 10:30am at the Gospel Baptist Church in Galion, Ohio.

Please remember this family in your prayers.

I was deeply saddedned to hear that "Big Dan" had passed away. He was a wonderful guy who you just loved the minute you met him even for the first time. He was a genuine friend to the southern gospel music industry and to anyone who had a desire to sing for the Lord. He will be missed by many more people than he ever knew simply because he touched their lives in a positive way through his ministry.

Dan would call me during his travels, just to hear my new songs. It seems he had a keen interest in my song material and he often encouraged me. When he would call, his first words to me was, "Larry, let me hear your new songs", then he would proceed to listen for one hour to new material. I would try to consider his feelings and often say, "Dan, haven't you heard enough of this", "NO" sing more", he would say. After an hour or so, I would receive his latest evangelist report. The Lord was blessing his endeavors. Dan was my buddy, although he insisted that he was a fan, but I couldn't accept that, either from him or anybody, (I don't believe in "Fans" in gospel music, that is a term which seems to be used in the worlds system). Yet, if I ever had anybody who loved my music it was Dan Adkins. Actually, Dan was a good writer and singer, but above all, I will miss his jolly and humor. He loved our Lord. By the way, it was Dan Adkins mother, whom I spoke with just days before her passing, who inspired the song, "Sound Of Trumpets", which I wrote for the Freeman's. FIND THAT SONG! It is actually a true story.

I gave the wrong song title in the last post. The song Dan's mother inspired was, "GRAVE CLOTHES", by the Freeman's.

Dan was a great friend. We had the opportunity of writing about 40 songs together in the last2 or 3 years. He was a great writer, preacher and someone I could pick up the phone and talk to when I needed help or encouragement. I will sincerely miss his cheerful outlook...his love for songwriters and his push for exellence in the field of gospel music. Dan always said to Sheldon, Jonathan and myself when we would go up to Galion to write song material..."Don't let the music die in you." He lived these words out and I pray his music and memory will live on. I know he was a great enfluence on my life as well as my writing. He will be missed ... but we will see him again. Dan was a great father to me and I am very blessed to have him touch my life and make the huge impact that he did. He lived for the lord and did it very well. He encouraged me throughout many of my troubling times and gave the advice that no one else could, as I know he did to many of you readers. He is with Jesus now and having a big celebration with his mother. After meeting Dan in 2003, I knew his attitude towards this life and his brethren was uncommon. Perhaps he knew his time on earth would be short. But "Beulah Land" sounds sweeter now that Dan is kissing Jesus' nail prints in person, because of his example of a believer's attitude who knows this life is short and the next one is bliss. Dan's mansion was not build with a foreman's greed but with dedication to ministry that we should all learn from. I will visit him there. Will you?
