The Mystery Men visit Ernie Phillips

Ed Crawford and the Mystery Men have just finished a new project. It is a tribute to the Kingsmen which Ed was a part of for ten years. During that time he was blessed to sing with many of the icons of our business, none of which were more significant than the “little giant” of gospel music, Ernie Phillips.

Recently, while passing through Asheville, NC, we got to talking about the old Kingsmen. The guys wondered if I stayed in contact with any of the old group. I told them occasionally. While listening to some of the old music, the question was brought up about Ernie. I had eluded to Ernie's recent illness and David Folenius said he wished he could meet him. Joe and Jym both said that would be wonderful. I picked up the phone and called to see how the little man was doing and if he felt like company. He said sure and we stopped by. Ernie was his usual upbeat self and everyone sat around while Ernie and I told old war stories about the good old days. The guys got a real laugh hearing about them.

After a couple of hours of reminiscing we got ready to leave. All the guys mentioned hearing Ernie with The Kingsmen and how fortunate they were to finally meet him. Then David whispered to me, “Do you think he would sing one with us?” Ernie graciously agreed and the guys just melted. Let me tell you he can still do it! That was the talk all the way back to Nashville.

Ernie is well on his way to full recovery and is consistently giving God the glory for all that has taken place. He is back to work and still singing locally with The Land of the Sky Boys. David, Joe and Jym could not say enough about what an honor it was to meet and sing with what they considered a legend of our industry. From my perspective Ernie has never missed a beat. He still sings as well as he ever did, still has the magnetic personality he always did, and I am honored to have sung with him those many years and to still call him a friend.

Let me finish by saying I have met few people in my life that continue to live the life of a true Christian even in the jaws of adversity. Ernie Phillips is one of those people. Ernie, our prayers are with you and may God continue to bless you. Thanks for the visit,

Until my voice changed in my teen years, I sang tenor. Lil Ernie was one of my biggest influences. He did a song on the Live In Alabama recording called Crossing Time. I would love to hear that song again. I hope I get the chance to meet Ernie some day. He's one of the best. And he deserves to be in the hall of fame. And he should be very proud of his son. Right now Eric is just as amazing as his father.
