Wheeler is a Bluegrass Gospel group. I’ve never heard of them until now. I’m a big bluegrass fan, though. A lot of their material is original. That’s always a good thing to see. The title of this project is, Bluegrass Gospel.
The first song on the CD is, “I Will”. Great music and great vocals. There is some great harmony on this song. The lady singing the solos has a very pretty voice. If you like bluegrass, you’ll love this song. “When You’re Looking Up”, is next. This song picks up the pace, and the beginning sounds a little like The Beverly Hillbillies theme song haha. I love it! Great group! There’s a great message in this song. Very encouraging. I love the last chorus when they go up on the first two lines. It puts some variety in there and keeps things interesting. “Thanks To You”, slows things down. This is an original written by Tiffany Wheeler. I love the words to this song. You rarely hear a song that’s just thanking the Lord for all He’s done, but this one does just that. The soloist does a great job on this song. Her voice makes for good, easy listening.
The pace stays slow with, “That’s God”. Kevin Wheeler wrote this song. The alto part should have been mixed a little louder to blend. There are good words, but they seem to be spread out a little too much, especially in the second verse. You can get a little bored with the song after a while. The whole song sounds the same and fairly long. “In The Morning” comes next. It has a medium tempo to it. The soloist here definitely has some vocal maturing to do but has great potential. There’s some good mandolin and banjo licks in there. Cut number six is “Load ‘Em Up”. This is another original by Kevin. There is a very cool instrumental intro. This is another medium paced song. The duet in the choruses makes for good variety. There’s a really good guitar solo in the middle of the song. The end didn’t blend very well, but other than that, it was good. The next song is, “I Had to Move”. This is a great range for this particular soloist, right at the breaking point of her voice but not exceeding that. It’s edgy. This is a good song about having to move when the holy spirit fills you because you can‘t sit still. Neat concept, and very true.
“All And All” slows things back down a bit. This was written by Kevin and Tiffany Wheeler, together. I like this song as acoustic with guitar only. This is a beautiful song. It is sang beautifully as well. Great message of encouragement. The traditional, “What A Day That Will Be”, comes up next. This one is done acapella. The bass part had a few incorrect notes. The blend is not really there. There’s definitely not a tight harmony on this song. The tempo was a little too slow, in my opinion. This is not one of my favorites. “Maker of the Storm”, is number ten on the CD. The tempo picks back up on this song. On certain parts during this song, the girl has some cool licks like Sonya Isaacs. Another original by Tiffany, “All He Wants To Do”, is next on the project. This has a slow/medium tempo. The harmonies are pretty tight on this song. The guy singing this song has some tones like Kenny Chesney. Good song.
“Solomon’s Song”, is an instrumental. These guys are some great pickers! I love to hear bluegrass instrumentals. They’re so neat. The guitar player is awesome, as well as the mandolin and banjo picker! All the instrumentalists are great! Next is, “From The Third Day On”. This is another slow paced song. This is a beautiful song. Great vocals. Awesome message in this song. It’s very unique. That’s what I like to hear, something I haven’t heard yet. Great song selection on this one! “Turn Back Around”, another original song by Kevin Wheeler is next on the project. Looks like he does a lot of songwriting for this group, which is awesome! I love original stuff, and I’m a little partial because I am a songwriter as well. This pops the pace way back up. There’s not a very good rhyme scheme going on through this song. It’s like he just wrote stuff down and put a tune to it. Sometimes that works, but in this particular song, not so much. The last song is, “Lord I Wanna Go”. I love the mandolin intro. It starts out slow then randomly speeds up. That’s really neat. This song ends things up on a high note and shows off vocals and instruments in a fast-paced way. VERY cool ending! I love it! I think this is my favorite.
The music and arrangements on this CD remind me a lot of the Isaacs. It’s a stylistic thing though. I love it! This was a good CD. There are some things that could have been done differently, but overall, everyone did a wonderful job on this project. I give this project 4 stars because I feel like there is room for improvement. God job, though, guys! Keep up the good work and the songwriting!
