The Rudds - Reflections

Label: Heartwarming Records

It looks like The Rudds are a family group. I’m a little partial to family groups, considering I sing with my family as well. I see that Naomi Rudd has written most of their material on this project. That’s a great thing! Original songs are always a plus.

“We’ll Be Happy”, starts off this project. Naomi Rudd co-wrote this song with Rich Wallen. It’s upbeat and a fun song to start the CD off with. I like the bass lines on the choruses. “Everybody Will Be Happy”, is a good song to go in the middle of this one. It fits very well. “Lift Up Holy Hands”, is next. Naomi also wrote this song. This slows the pace down. The high female part is not blending with the rest of the group. The harmonies aren’t very good on this particular song. They get a little better as the song progresses, though. The female solo is very shaky, and it seems like it’s a little too high for her. It’s a good song, though. Good words. Another original song by Naomi, “Maybe Today”, comes next. This has a medium tempo. This is well-written. It is a traditional Southern Gospel song.

Cut number four, also written by Naomi, is “There’ll Be Shouting”. This is another medium paced song, about the same as the last. The harmonies are better on this song. It’s got three verses, I believe, which is very unusual in Southern Gospel music. Very traditional ending. Good message in the song. “Home To Stay” slows things down. The bass singer takes the lead on the verses. The vocals are a little shaky on this song. The next song is, “Thinkin’ About Heaven”. This song, along with the next three songs, are all written by Naomi Rudd. Good harmonies on this one. I would have done the ending a little different. It got a little too high for the lead vocal.

Naomi’s song, “It’s Good To Be a Child Of The King”, is cut number seven. This song sounds familiar. There are some pitchy places on the highest parts of the song. Again, they probably should have lowered the key at least one step. I think better breath support would help with the shakiness in the voice. Another song of hers, “I Am Persuaded”, is next on the project. This is another medium paced song. I would think about maybe speeding this song up a tad. It seems to be a little too slow. For the female vocalist on verse two, if you would slow your runs down a little, it makes them a a lot smoother. Great words though. Good songwriting, Naomi. Moving right along, “What Can I Do For You Lord”, comes in at number nine. This is another slow one. There are a lot of slow to medium paced songs on this project. There’s a good message in this song. You don’t find many songs asking the Lord what we can do for Him. Great thought. The CD ends up with, “I’m Going That Way”. This dramatically picks up the pace. I have to say, this is my favorite. Good blend on harmonies. Great upbeat way to end the project.

The Rudds are a group that I, personally, have never heard of. They’re a family group, and Naomi Rudd, seems to write most of their songs. She’s a great writer. I give this project 3 stars. There should have been some more upbeat songs on it. Try to pop a few more fast songs in your next project. Spice it up a bit. If they work on their harmonies and blending and add some faster songs to the lineup, I think they can come out with some good stuff. Family harmony is hard to beat. Good job guys! Keep up the good work.
