According to news reporters for Christian Voice Magazine, new information has surfaced concerning the departure of Kasey Kemp and Judson Horner from Naomi & The Segos.
At some point last week Naomi Sego Reader told a CVM reporter that she had received a letter from former group members Kasey Kemp and Judson Horner stating that they owned the name, "The Segos" and informed her that she could no longer use "The Segos" as part of her group name. After using the name for over 50 years, Naomi is now being told she can no longer use the name, although it has been a professional name for James Sego, late husband of Naomi Sego Reader as The Sego Brothers and Naomi.
CVM investigation also revealed that Horner and Kemp jointly registered "the Segos" as an LLC (Limited Liability Company) on April 28, 2008, in the state of North Carolina, with Judson Horner listed as the "initial registrant." Additionally, the web domain, http://www.thesegos.com , was registered on April 15, 2008 with Judson Horner listed as the registrant for the domain.
Naomi Sego has expressed her hope of a peaceful resolve and desires the prayers of her friends and supporters.
UPDATE
Our offices were contacted by Kasey Kemp this morning with the following statements:
I have read the statment on your site and we have some MAJOR misunderstandings. While part of the group, Judson and I expressed interest in purchasing the Sego name. At that period in time, Naomi expressed her interest in us continuing beyond her retirement, whenever that may be. She told us she would like to speak to her son and would let us know the outcome. As you know, a process such as this is very lengthy and can sometimes take months. While still in question, we began the paper work hoping this would relieve Naomi of current stresses and allow us a secure future. However, when it became necessary for us to leave the group because of financial stress, we started the dissolution of the LLC. We did leave a letter concerning the ownership of the name, but it's intent was to stop Terry Dorsey from kicking us off dates we had promised to ful-fill. As a matter of fact, I have already spoken with Naomi's son, Carlton Sego about the dissolvement. He is in complete understanding of the original intent of the formation and has no problems with our actions. The reason it still appears on the government's site is because the process takes several days to remove it. However it IS inactive. There are no problems between us and Naomi and a call for a "peaceful resolvment" is not needed. There is nothing to resolve because we are NOT using the Sego name and never intend to without proper permission.

What a terrible situation for Naomi. I don't know what these men are thinking, but it certainly seems like they are not treating Naomi Sego with the love and respect she has earned from her many, many years of Godly service. My first thoughts are extreme disappointment in these two men and I certainly would not go hear them sing or purchase any products from them either personally or through a website. It is almost unbelievable.
It's a great way for these guys to kill their career before it even starts...way to go!
Perhaps these men should use the professional name "Seagulls" since they just flew right on off into the sunset of their careers.
I hope there's a very hot corner waiting just for this disgusting pair! What on earth makes them think that anyone with half a brain would support them now?
It's a shame that these young men would treat a legend like Ms.Reader this way. It appears these young men are more interested in other things besides sharing the gospel. I agree with the other comments about killing their careers before it ever starts.

Ok, I've watched this junk fill these sites for to long. I'm going to nip this in the bud before it goes any further. I have sent an email to Susan concerning this in hopes it will be taken down because there are some BIG misunderstandings going on here.
First of all, when the writer of the original article in the Christian Voice Magazine researched the matter, there appears to be evidence to support Naomi's concerns regarding the applications, etc. It is unfortunate that you had a misunderstanding with her new manager and used the leverage you had to try to influence him to let you sing that last concert. I believe you may have participated in this issue being blown out of proportion. That could be the impetus for the entire misunderstanding. I'm glad you are not doing as the article suggested and your motives were to try to help Naomi.
Naomi and I have chosen not to react to any of the negative publicity becuase it is neither appropriate nor Christian-like. I agree with Kasey that this is being blown out of proportion and false statements are being made. Since the financial situation has been made public I will confirm that Kasey and Judson were ONLY removed from what was to be their last weekend with Naomi & the Segos because of the possibility that their payroll would not be met. Naomi did not want them to have to work and possibly not be paid. I must admit that I myself have, until now, had a false impression of what Kasey and Judson were doing. I apologize to them for that false impression. I appreciate what Kasey said in his comment and wish he and Judson nothing but the best as they begin their business. I pray that the original friendship we have had will be able to continue. Now folks, lets stop all this talk. PLEASE!!
As an observer of this very sad situation I am appalled at the idea that anyone would try and hurt a woman who has spent her life singing the gospel. Naomi has been attached by members of the gospel community for several years now. ALL of these people will be given the reward they have earned by the Father.
Thanks for clearing up this situation. I am also glad that this was a situation to try and help Ms. Sego. Kasey, I really respect the way you explained the situation in a Christian manner. Let's all learn from this and continue what God has called us to do. I too want to apologize for my part in continuing the misunderstanding.

Thanks, Judson, Kasey, and Terry for each of you adding an entry. It appears to me that enough has been explained. There should be no need for anymore discussion on this matter. There are so many more issues we as Christians need to be focusing on and praying about. Our Father left us a commandment to LOVE each other and pray for each other. Let's be about our Father's business.
First of all I would like to say it makes me sick of the way we as "christian people" treat each other. I've been gospel music for many years and have seen many changes, but one thing has stayed the same--the way we jump on the band wagon when ever we hear of something going on in this case with Kasey and Judson. The first few comments that were recorded we were ready to hang them both only to find out the truth had not yet been told or could it be we really did not want to hear the truth maybe we would not have anything to gossip about. I've known Kasey for many years and I knew he would soon take all he could and have to write a letter of explanation to all of us busy-bodys, God help us!!!!!I'm ashamed of the way we act and of what we say in these situations. Why can't we ask for God's direction and leadership in things. For their sakes both kasey and judson have been nothing but wonderful to Naomi and carried the load when they had nothing to work with at times. I've recived many calls from a very frustrated kasey and at times had nothing to offer but just a ear to listen. Maybe in this case, and in the future, we should shut our mouths and hit our knees, but I'm afraid we will never learn. We want to stay up on all the dirt that's happening in our world of Gospel Music. I do want to say to Kasey and to Judson I love you both and I'm praying for you....."Don't let them get you down"...God help us. Schroeder
It's very apparent that there are two sides to this story and the truth is somewhere in between. Thanks for allowing us to see both sides. I won't take a side with either but I will pray.
This is interesting... the news reports said: Naomi Sego Reader told a CVM reporter that she has received a letter from former group members Kasey Kemp and Judson Horner stating that they owned the name, "The Segos" and informed her that she could no longer use "The Segos" as part of her group name.
there probably is more questions than answers. usually are in things like this. but looks to me like ms naomi is speaking she just chooses to speak through CVM. thats her choice. maybe chuck, you're just upset she isn't speaking to you.
OK - now I understand.
1. Naomi decided to not force Judson and Kasey to fulfill the last of their obligations to her under their 5 week notice (under what would be an additional financial loss to them)and cause them to sustain this loss because of their desire to honor their 5 week notice - in her best interests.
2. When they learned that Terry Dorsey was relieving them of that obligation (which was being supposedly sacrificially offered to help Naomi)by deciding to sing with Naomi with Scott Spangler, they sent a letter to Terry, which apparently caused him to understand that they were in control of the name - using leverage to set aside Naomi's wishes and force their way into the concert - without regard for Naomi's wishes and decisions.
3. I understand that Kasey feels we are misunderstanding the situation. If we are - so did Terry and Naomi - who told CVM that she was being told she could not any longer use the "Sego" name.
4.If Naomi (who apparently read the letter) was sure enough of its "intent" to say what she said to CVM and then asks for prayer and says she desires a peaceful resolution - how are we in error for understanding the "intent" of their action in the same way Naomi apparently did? With all due respect, it appears that part of the "intent" was to force Naomi to do something she had decided she didn't want to do (regarding Memorial Day weekend) and, in the best possible light this "intent" can be given in my view, it in the least forces a senior Gospel Music legend to do something she did not want to do.
I felt better about this situation before I read this explanation.

Seems to me that Chuck should keep his nose clean of this. He usually likes to dig up stuff of this nature and blow it out of proportion. Go get a real job Chuck.

insider,
Chuck is right on target. Someone isn't coming completely clean.
If Kemp and Horner decided to reverse paperwork they filed prior to their resignation on the third weekend in April, for example, why did they go ahead and sign that paperwork on the fourth weekend in April? Those numbers don't add up.
On the other hand, if Kemp and Horner never had the intention of using the Sego name without permission as they say, why did Naomi tell CVM they were trying to do that very thing?
The bottom line, though, is that Kemp and Dorsey appear to be on more friendly terms that we were originally led to believe by Kemp's first press release.
I don't need to know the answers to either of those questions as long as Kemp and Horner are actually doing what they now say they're doing...letting go of any sort of legal claim on the Sego name.

Heh...I had forgot those words of wisdom from Mark Twain.
The quote attaches to the comments I make here automatically.

Can't we all just get along? Oh yeah, no we can't because divisiveness is too fun! Unfortunate for Christians ain't it?
Names have been sold & traded in Gospel Music since day one, so that the "company" and "business" of popular groups can carry on as the years go by. Had this been a public statement from the start, and all parties were on the same page, we wouldn't be having this discussion at all. Look at how many groups that are legendary hardly have any blood from the original group at all. This way this has been handle so far though, the name Sego is going to be bloodstained if these guys try to use it. You fellows might as well pick a new one and move on.
Too late to "nip it in the bud" sir.
Ditto! He's not as "hidden" as he thinks he is. He's made way too many enemies and they're talking.
It seems to me, Mr Kemp, that "thou doest protest too loudly". You mentioned trying to "buy" the Sego name, and then you spend $125 dollars to file an LLC. And, apparently, the LLC is NOT in the process of dissolution. If anyone cares to check out the information on this, you can go to
Thanks - Kasey, I truly wish you the best in whatever path you deem to take!
There are people who are intrinsically dishonest, and then there are people who are just misinformed. And sometimes, a person WANTS to believe that noone is out to do them harm. Wanting to believe that everyone is honest, just because they SAY they are honest; and can talk a mile a minute; and ACT so sweet and helpful;can be very dangerous. And as everyone knows, older people are particularly vulnerable to being scammed. But woe to the persons who do the scamming! It is true that you can fool part of the people part of the time; but you can't fool all of the people all of the time. And of course, you can't EVER fool GOD.
