I don't think there is one more anticipated release in Southern Gospel other than Greatly Blessed by the Gaither Vocal Band. While Southern Gospel's premier group has released two recordings prior to this one (last year's Reunited and the live Better Day) - this is the first recording from the "new" Gaither Vocal Band that features all new material from the group.
From the first strains of the opening cut - "Better Day" - it's easy to tell that this isn't going to be the same kind of release that fans have come to know of the group over the last 15 years or so (when Guy Penrod stepped into the group). "Better Day" features a unique, jazzy vocal arrangement coupled with a sparse instrumental accompaniment. "Love Like I'm Leavin'" also features a bit more of a bluesy arrangement that showcases the five-part harmony exceptionally well. The blues style sticks around also on album highlights like "Muddy Water" and "Ain't Nobody."
However, fans of the group's more traditional sounds need not fret, as Greatly Blessed features some of that Gaither down home charm - most notably on the title cut and cover of the Southern Gospel classic "When He Blest My Soul." "Clean" features the GVB's trademark stacks of vocals and harmonies - despite David Phelps' overly breathy vocals. Mark Lowry also pulls out a great performance on the stand out "Thank You."
The Gaither Vocal Band has always been known for their unique covers of other artist's tunes - and that doesn't stop on this release. Michael English's touching cover of "Please Forgive Me" resonates well with the listener, while "He Is Here" will go down as one of Wes Hampton's most sought after vocals performances.
However, there are a few mis-steps on Greatly Blessed that this reviewer can't just get passed. David Phelps' dramatic turn on "He's Alive" feels over sung and over produced. It's almost as if Phelps has gotten bored with his own vocals and is trying to liven it up by over-singing. Speaking of Phelps - his arrangement of "All In All" feels way too forced and overdone as well. Sometimes it's not about the cool harmonics and it's just about the song. The beauty of the lyrics in "All In All" got lost in the overproduced vocals.
Overall, Greatly Blessed has a lot of really great things going for it. Wes and Michael especially tear it up in the vocal department. Both of these singers are seasoned professionals and know how to deliver a lyric that not only showcases the beauty of their voice, but the ease of the melody and how it works with telling the truth of the lyric. Other singers should take note and see exactly how it's done - most notably on tunes like "Muddy Water" and "He Is Here."
There's been a lot of hub-bub on the internet lately about the latest release from the Booth Brothers - Declaration. The album represents a lot of different things for the extremely popular trio. First - this is the first time that the trio has teamed up with Lari Goss to produce the record - giving it a much more sweeping, orchestrated sound that hasn't been common on past releases. These songs just soar from start to finish. Upon hearing the opening trumpet tones on the first track "A Higher Throne" - one recognizes that this isn't your typical Booth Brothers release.
Other songs have Lari Goss' fingerprints all over them - such as the show-stopping "God Did It All," "We Believe," and "Statement of Faith." "All Over the World," with its playful Latin accompaniment sounds more like a Goss choral cut than Southern Gospel classic. Also, the acapella intro on "Then I Met the Master" adds a nice touch and feels a bit atypical for this kind of Goss production.
Another notable aspect about this release is that the Booth Brothers have focused on finding songs that are scripturally relevant - rather than just singing Gospel songs that feel good. The guys touch on a lot of different things here, such as God's judgement ("Before the Cross"), Grace's life changing power ("I See Grace"), strength of the church ("I Still Believe In the Church"), and the peace of God ("Absolute Peace"). In fact, the first thing the listener really takes away from Declaration isn't the grand arrangements or excellent vocals - but it's the power of the lyric that really stands out - especially on cuts like "I See Grace," "God Did It All," and "Absolute Peace."
Overall, fans of the Booth Brothers' more progressive releases (such as Room For More and The Blind Man Saw It All) might be a tad bit disappointed with this release's lack of originality in vocal arrangements and cutting edge, up-beat tracks. And that is a valid concern for fans of the group. Declaration really does have a few pacing issues with a lack of any real strong upbeat and radio-friendly numbers ("I See Grace" notwithstanding - please guys - this song is begging to be heard on the radio). Also, while "All Over the World" is a fun tune, and it does work well in a live setting - the tune just doesn't work in this batch of songs and feels way out of left field when the track starts up (especially following the stellar "The Gospel Song/Before the Cross"). In addition, this version of the Mosie Lister classic "Then I Met the Master" has a beautiful arrangement, but feels a bit too over produced and the track should be brought a few clicks up in the reviewer's very humble opinion. The track drags a bit too much for this listener's taste.
Even with those minor quibbles, Declaration will easily go down as one of 2010's finest releases and possibly the Booth Brothers' career recording.
Just reading the liner notes from Lauren Talley's fourth solo release - Songs In the Night - the listener immediately knows that this isn't just another release for one of Gospel music's most cherished vocalists. Lauren is very upfront about the struggles she had with her faith - and in turn - the songs and book that were birthed from those struggles. Songs In the Night isn't just an album for fans of Lauren Talley. It's a musical journey into the heart of an artist who has had to look doubt and fear in the eyes and figure out exactly who she is in Christ and her place in this life.
The album kicks off with the beautifully stirring ballad "Songs In the Night" from the pen of Jim Brady, Tony Wood, and Barry Weeks. Wood and Brady teamed up with Kenna West for the upbeat and encouraging "The Extra Mile." "Just As I Am" (which was also found on Jim Brady's excellent solo debut) finds Lauren's spiritual journey coming full circle.
Lauren has always had a knack for choosing songs from other genres that will work well with her fanbase (and that of the Talley Trio's fanbase). "Hallelujah Anyhow" is a great cover from the Black Gospel world (Joe Pace wrote this great Gospel classic). In addition, Lauren's take on "In Christ Alone" is another great cover of the tune, though it doesn't really take the song anywhere it hasn't already gone before. "My Life Is In Your Hands," an old Kirk Franklin tune, gets a nice cover as well, and the Marty Funderburk and Joseph Habedank penned "All You Need When You Need It" (originally recorded by Karen Peck & New River) closes out the album nicely. "He Will Carry You" is a Scott Wesley Brown original, but Lauren's version feels a bit underdone and lacks a real good musical climax to make it memorable.
Overall, the great thing about this record isn't Lauren's impeccable vocal interpretations or the strong arrangements (though those things are very much to be commended here). The real story here is Lauren's story. The places she takes the listener with these songs shows that it's not about perfect record or great album sales - rather it's about finding the heart of God and knowing your place in His will. Lauren's Songs In the Night shows a transparent artist who has a renewed vision and passion for her ministry - and that is a breath of fresh air in this industry.

1. The Dunaways just recently hit the road again, explain what you have been doing?
We have spent the past 17 years in music ministry, the past 10 of which has also been pastoring New Zion Pentecostal Church in Philadelpha, MS. Shortly after we released our last recording, we went through some trials that sidelined us. Kanah and Josh lost their first baby and that was followed by the birth of precious little Emmy Kate. Emmy is a "God Thing". As soon as she was born we began to lose her to an adrenal problem. Death was very near, but God had already sent Kanah a word through our dear friend Sister Priscilla McGruder months before, "I shall live and not die, and declare the marvelous works of the Lord!" God stepped in right on time and moved in a perilous situation. Emmy is a living breathing little praising testimony everywhere she goes of what God has done! Sister McGruder lives on through all the lives she blessed and touched.
We have been blessed with two more grandchildren by our son Davy and daughter-n-love Nicole. Their names are Jaxon 5 and Hattie 2 . Baby happenings have been frequent over the past several years around the Dunaway house, but for now it is back to work.
2. For those who aren't familiar with the Dunaways, tell us a little about your group.
(Randall) We are a family group. Daddy, Mama, and Daughter trio. We started in the ministry singing together about 1993. Began recording and sending music to radio around 1996.
National airplay opened up for us about 02/03 Thankful that God can still use us.
3. Tell us about your new recording - It's A God Thing
(Kanah) It's A God Thing "is" a God Thing! We have learned over the years that we are not calling the shots. It does not matter how much planning and working it all out you do, God is in control in the lives of His children. He says when to stop, He says when to go and we really have no control over it. The first verse to the title cut "It's A God Thing" written by the great songwriter Jerry Salley tells the story of what we went through with Emmy Kate. It was such a confirmation that God is saying now go and tell people what I did for you. We are beyond excited to share our stories through this collection of songs and hopefully encourage someone else to just hold on, God has got you.
4. Fans can already hear your first single "When There's No Hope, There is Grace" on Southern Gospel radio. Tell us about the song.
(Tammy) It is amazing to look back over the years and see those valley's and places where God had you walk through. At the time, you could not figure out what in the world He was doing. I actually wrote an article for SoGospel News.com a few years ago and gave my testimony about going through a very terrible time of serious clinical depression. I was completely disabled for a year and 7 months. That very year in 1999, a man that we did not know, in another place and a totally different situation was feeling the same hopeless desperation that I was. His name is Rick Hendrix and God gave him the words to the song "When There's No Hope, There is Grace".
Many years have gone by since the turmoil of depression and the personal struggle that brought forth the words of that song. I have been healed of depression and restored, and Rick went on with his life and has been used greatly by the Lord. But to our wonder and amazement, and with complete confirmation, God brought our experiences together recently, and after all these years has chosen this time to use "When There's No Hope, There is Grace" as a tool to reach out to people suffering from hopelessness. God's Grace is the answer. He makes a way of escape when we cast our burden upon him. We cannot figure it out, we must simply trust His grace to bring us through it.
5. What's the response been like from those who have heard it.
We are hearing the word anointed. We know that God's anointing breaks the yoke. To us, that is the purpose of music. To minister to the hurting, to bind up the wounded, without the anointing of God this is an impossible task for man to do. So that is what we were hoping and praying for all along.
6. What can fans expect from you in concert?
We are what we are and we just love to have church. Randall is a pastor/preacher, Tammy has been on a piano playing in church since she was five, and Kanah has been singing and recording since she was eight
years old. When you come to see the Dunaways we want people to have a God experience. Most of the time you will see Kanah's husband Josh and Miss Emmy Kate and sometimes she will treat us with a show of her own, We want you to go home uplifted, encouraged, and ready to go on another mile.
7. Tell us what to expect from The Dunaways in the coming months.
We are scheduling dates, trying to get our music out to the people, and just doing what God puts on our plate.Walking totally by faith.
8. What has God been teaching you lately?
Relax and let Him do it. Get comfortable with God's will for your life and don't get all crazy when it doesn't go like you planned. His thoughts are higher, His ways are better.
9. Any other information you would like to share?
You can see our schedule, and find more info at our website. http://www.dunawaymusic.com We will have clips of the new album up asap. Hope to announce an official release date very soon. For bookings call Randall Dunaway 601.416.5823 or email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
When the Crabb Family busted up a couple of years ago - it was interesting to see how each breakout act from the group (Crabb Revival, The Bowling Family, Jason Crabb, and Aaron & Amanda Crabb) had their own style. The listener could hear each unique element that made the Crabb Family sound what it was.
Aaron & Amanda Crabb's debut - After the Rain - wasn't remotely Southern Gospel. Its R&B and pop laced worship music didn't really attract a whole lot of Southern Gospel fans - despite having some pretty good success with singles like "Miracle" and "Strength." The duo is back with their sophomore outing - Love With No End. Teaming up with super-producer Michael Sykes this time around, Love With No End still has the trademark Aaron & Amanda sound (slick, produced tracks with an R&B edge coupled with worship lyrics and memorable melodies), but there's also a much more concentrated sound in the country/Southern Gospel genres as well.
The album kicks off with "The Name of Jesus" - a song that has already made the rounds at radio as a part of Aaron & Amanda's special release Live at the Oak Tree. "Hold to God's Unchanging Hand" gets a nice cover here, and Southern Gospel fans should immediately be drawn to the number both because it's a classic Southern tune, and it immediately recalls the sounds of the Crabb Family.
Amanda's first big feature - "You Never Know" - features a slightly dated accompaniment, recalling early-90's Janet Paschal or Twila Paris. The duo's cover of Third Day's mega-worship hit "King of Glory" receives a nice inspo cover and could work well for the Crabbs on Southern Gospel radio in addition to Soft AC/Inspirational. "Love So Amazing" is another trademark Aaron & Amanda Crabb sounding song that features Aaron at his finest. This song is an instant reminder of the group's big hit "Miracle." Worship music is given another treatment on Amanda's excellent turn on "Healer."
"You Gotta to Move" is a feisty, horn-drenched number that fans of more bluesy-based funk will come to love. The song features various members of the Crabb Family (such as Adam and Jason Crabb). "Bless Your Name" and "King of Who I Am" also end the record on a more worshipful note.
With the group's recent move to Texas as worship leaders for John Hagee's church - the over-abundance of worship tunes is not unexpected. Aaron & Amanda have the corner on the market for this kind of worship oriented Southern Gospel music, and with Love With No End, they continue to do it with much ease.

1. While The Browders have been around for a long time, you've just recently started to make headlines on a national level. Tell us about your group's history.
The Browders officially began as a group in 1990 when Tommy Browder felt God was calling him to start a family ministry after years of ministering with other groups. Matthew was 10 and David was 8 years old. As the boys entered their late teens and early 20s, they began operating on a more full-time basis. Matthew and I (Sonya) married in 2005, and I joined the ministry at that point in time after having been in full-time ministry in my home state of Maine for 10 years. It was around that time that we took the advice the group had received for years from industry professionals and friends: make a good recording. Be a Light was our first "Nashville" recording and the first single released from that project went to #7 on the charts. We look back on that as a milestone in our ministry and can see how that catapulted us to steadily progress to the place we have reached today.
2. Your first major hit on Southern Gospel radio came a couple of years ago with "Stand Up For Jesus." What was the inspiration from that song and how has it made an impact on your ministry?
Quite honestly, there is no big story behind the writing of that song. Matt just picked up his guitar one day and started playing and singing and the result was that song! Oddly enough, that was our biggest hit to date at that time, and the impact was huge. A larger number of radio stations across the country began playing our music, the airplay was greater than anything we had seen, and we started getting booked in areas we had never been before. It was pretty neat to go to a place we had never sung and see people in the audience singing along with "Stand Up For Jesus"!
3. Tell us about your most recent project - The Message.
The Message was a whole different level of recording for us, from start to finish. It really was "a project"! For starters, we wrote every song ourselves. We spent hours writing and re-writing, especially Matthew. He was in "writing mode" for months. Then we spent a day with writer John Darin Rowsey, allowing him to critique the songs, line by line, and we made changes according to his recommendations. We then spent a day arranging with producer, Kevin Ward. He was a very intricate part of this recording from start to finish and through this process has become a great friend and important part of our ministry. We have learned so much from him! Then, of course, we went through the typical recording process of tracking the music, then vocals, overdubs, orchestration, etc. We didn't rush through any step in the process, but instead made every detail, whether small or great, important. It was tedious at times, but the end result is something we are very pleased with.
4. You guys just scored your first #1 hit on both the Singing News Top 80 and AbsolutelyGospel.com Top 40 Weekly Chart. Tell us about that song.
While going through the process of choosing which songs to use for The Message, I realized we didn't have one on the short list that specifically addressed the subject of salvation or the blood of Jesus. It was decided at that point that while we had 30 plus songs to choose from, another one would have to be written. Matt got to work immediately. We have not written much together as a couple, although I used to write all the time. He's just too quick for me to even get a line in before he has it done! But I told him if he could wait for me, I thought we could write this one together as it addressed a subject very important to me. The result was "Message of the Cross". It addresses a very real problem in the church of today. In an effort to "reach" a larger audience, probably well-meaning people have decided we must not tell of the sacrifice Jesus made for us because of the graphic content. We cannot, however, "reach" anyone without the Gospel. No matter what the method, we cannot lose the message, and that is what we would like to encourage people with in this song.
5. You just released the follow up single to "Message of the Cross." What can fans expect from The Browders with "Land of No Goodbyes"?
It's a classic, Southern Gospel style tune written by David and Matthew and true fans of this type of music will love it! The Browders are big Happy Goodmans/Hinsons fans, and I think that might have influenced this one quite a bit!
6. The Browders write a good portion of their own music. How does the songwriting process work for you personally?
Well, I spend most of my time listening to the song-writing process, so I'll tell you how it works for Matthew! He hears a song in nearly everything, and once he gets the thought in his mind, you might as well forget carrying on a normal conversation with him until he's done! He loves it and has become a great writer because of the time he has spent doing it, seeking out advice from other great writers and co-writing. It's amazing to see him at work.
7. You guys recently started working with child advocacy program Compassion International. How do you incorporate that ministry into your own?
It's such an honor to be a part of this very effective ministry. We get the privilege of sharing with people everywhere we go what they can do to help make a difference in the life of a child through Compassion. In essence, it has taken our ministry "world-wide", as we are able to reach children around the world one by one.
8. How has teaming up with the organization personally affected you guys?
Compassion sent Matthew & I to Ecuador when we first started working with them, and we were able to witness first hand the work they are accomplishing. Matthew had never been to a third world country (I had been to India several years ago doing mission work), and you can't come into contact with the poverty these children experience without having it affect you. We don't have children of our own, so I think we've translated our "parenting" instincts into a deep concern for finding sponsors for these children.
9. What other ministries are you involved in outside of music?
Browder Ministries takes up most of our time. We do concerts as well as revivals; Matthew & Tommy preach. I write a monthly devotional for our web site (which is currently under re-construction, hoping to relaunch in the middle of September). David designs our BrowderBrand t-shirts that are available at our concerts. I donated my hair to Locks of Love two summers ago, and I am in the process of growing it out to donate it again! I am hoping to recruit some women to do the same, so be watching our web site for details!
10. Any other additional information you would like to share?
You can find out more info on The Browders by visiting us online at http://www.thebrowders.com . Please come and visit with us at NQC. We'll be singing on Thursday's Featured Artist Showcase in East Hall A-B from 12:00-1:00 p.m. with The Akins, Three Bridges, Tim Lovelace, Torchmen, and Paid In Full!

After this latest lengthy absence from this little corner of the web, a bit of explanation is probably in order.
No, iy's not due to an extended road trip with a gospel music group(what fun that might be, though!).
And it's not because of any health issues(thanks be to God!)...I'm in pretty good shape for the shape I'm in!
I have alluded in the past to personal issues that keep me from posting here as often as I'd like...and it might just be the time to share the most consuming(and joyous)of those with all of you, right here...right now.
After just over a half century of living and working in this all-too-fallen world, I am finally going to do something that most people my age have been doing for quite some time by this point.
I am finally getting married/
What's taken me so long?
Well, call me picky, but given my inclination, I've never felt I could make a lifetime commitment to a woman until I was convinced that she shared my love for and dedication to Jesus Christ and His Word and Way. All the other sruff(llooks, income, personality, etc.)is nice indeed, but if my intended does not share the most important part of my being, then she cannot be my soulmate, which is what I believe God would want a wife of mine to be. Period. End of discussion.
Happily, I've found such a person. Leona is absolutely committted first, foremost, and primarily to Jesus...and wants her life companion to be the same. She has proven that repeatedly, over and over again, to the point where she motivates me to be as Christlike as I can possibly be, to a degree that no one I've ever met has. I need that as a part of my daily life. And her devotion to me is most reminiscent of God's love for me through Jesus, and I need THAT around me every day as well.
At this point, I can't afford NOT to have that kind of person and love in my life.
And I am looking very forward to returning that same kind of love and devotion right back to Leona, and soon I'll be doing that on a daily basis.
Leona is also gifted with a sunny and cheerful disposition, a most kind and caring heart, and a wonderful sense of humor that keeps life interesting and lively at all times...that doesn't hurt in considering her for a soulmate.
We have talked daily for nearly eight months, and have come to the mutual conclusion that God has deigned to join us together...so we are going to do just that.
But what a roller coaster ride this has become! Daily, my moods range from ecstasy to frustration to depression to wonder right back to ecstasy, in just minutes at a time!
Not having been in this state before, I'm concluding that this is just par for the course for an expectant groom...either that or part of the largest possible "teachable moment"(how I'm already tiring of that phrase!)one can imagine...and it's all in the education of a regular guy who's trying to live his life in the light of the gospel of Christ the best he can.
And I'm learning more and more daily the absolute joy that comes with belonging to somebody, and having someone to belong to him.
And I'm loving every minute of it...and can hardly wait for this next stage of my life to begin! Bring it on, Lord!!
I'll keep all of you posted on this latest divine adventure as it progresses...and I have NO doubt it will do just that!!

Many new quartets do not find themselves on the main stage of the National Quartet Convention within a year of their formation, but that defined the start of The Sonmen when they won the prestigious NQC Talent Competition in 1985 and performed on the main stage of NQC in recognition of their achievement. Subsequent radio success of their single, “Keep Looking Up”, further confirmed this quartet’s potential by the Southern Gospel industry. “Keep On Pressin’ On” available now
August 26, 2010 (Nashville, TN) - Singer/songwriter/speaker and soon-to-be author Shannon Perry has just released her new radio single entitled “Keep On Pressing On” from her CD, The Real Thing. Co-written by Shannon and her producer, Lifeway songwriter Paul Marino, “Keep on Pressing On” comes from a time in Shannon's life when circumstances looked bleak. She had just learned, in the course of a 24-hour period, that her husband had cancer, her father suffered a heart attack and a hurricane was threatening her Texas home. Shannon recalls those intense moments as if they were yesterday.
“I remember quietly heading up the stairs to snuggle into my overstuffed 'prayer chair,'” says Shannon. “As I prepared to pour out my heart in formal declarations so that God would 'really' hear me, the strangest thing happened. In place of eloquence came only four words: 'God, I trust you.' Praying through hot tears for over an hour, the only words I could seem to whisper during my entire prayer time were the same: 'God, I trust you.' 'Couldn’t I come up with anything better than this?' I thought. After all, these were larger than life situations that needed larger than life prayers. That’s when I heard four more words in my heart: 'Keep On Pressing On.' It was as if the coach of my team had just stepped up to home plate while I was at bat and whispered in my ear, 'You can do it! I’m right here with you.'”
Shannon tells the entire story of “Keep On Pressing On” in her new article on Crosswalk.com. Shannon is a contributing writer for the site which has over 24 million views per month. NASHVILLE, TENN. (August 23, 2010) – THE HOPPERS, one of Gospel music’s most acclaimed and awarded family recording artists, have just completed an all-new studio recording entitled SOMETHING'S HAPPENING (Spring Hill Music), which will hit the streets August 24th. The new release, produced and arranged by legendary composer and producer Lari Goss, has been in the works for nearly two years.
“When you are in the studio, you’re always trying to make sure you are getting it right,” describes soprano Kim Hopper. “Singing before an audience is entirely different. When on stage, you want to paint pictures for the audience as you sing. This recording process gave us a chance to go in and re-do what we had recorded based on what we found worked live. We changed the flow of lines and were able to capture on the recording something closer to what we do in concert.”
The group has captured some unique moments on the new release, which includes songs penned by Bill Gaither, Rusty Golden, Dianne Wilkinson, Joel Lindsey, Tony Wood, Kyla Rowland, Nancy Harmon, Larry Hinson and Gerald Crabb among others. One of those stand-out moments is Connie’s collaboration with Goss on the title cut.
“We had listened to the song ‘Something’s Happening,’” adds Connie. “Kim liked it. Lari loved it but said that it needed something between the verses—something describing what’s going on. He said, ‘Connie, why don’t you go write that?’ This is what we came up with.”
“Lari is a well that never runs dry,” describes Dean. “He pieces the story together regardless of the style of song and has such knowledge. He is constantly thinking from the top to the bottom of the process…seeing the song from beginning to end. It’s like God’s given him a three-dimensional view into a song with the heart that he has in each stroke of the pen while writing arrangements.”
One of the unique vocal arrangements on the release is “Living in the Arms of Mercy,” which finds drummer Mike Hopper behind the microphone, taking the high part alongside Dean and Kim for an unexpected blend from this family. “Nobody’s Too Bad or Too Good” features a solo from Dean and Kim’s daughter Karlye. Group patriarch Claude Hopper is featured on a re-make of the classic “I Know Who Holds Tomorrow.” The group also joins artists Greater Vision, The Booth Brothers and Legacy Five for the song “Statement of Faith,” a song recorded collaboratively and released by each of the groups on their individual recordings in addition to being released into the choral market through LifeWay.
The release of Something’s Happening falls on the heels of the successful launch of THE GAITHER GOSPEL SERIES: THE BEST OF THE HOPPERS (Gaither Music Group). The DVD soared to #2 on Billboard’s video chart while the CD entered the Billboard Heatseeker chart at #4. Additionally, the CD entered the Nielsen SoundScan Southern Gospel chart at #1 and the Contemporary Christian chart at #10.
The Hoppers maintain a heavy touring schedule, performing on the Gaither Homecoming stage, at the National Quartet Convention (over 60,000 attendees), the Great Western Gospel Music Fan Festival (8-9,000 attendees), at the Cove and at Singing in the Sun in addition to around 150 dates annually.
SOMETHING'S HAPPENING, available through EMI CMG Distribution, will be available at online outlets, including iTunes and Amazon.com among others, and also in retail stores where Christian music is sold. For further information regarding The Hoppers, visit http://www.thehoppers.com

His involvement in studio work completes a broad spectrum of where listeners have heard Zack’s talents. In just a few short years he is quickly rising to be one Southern Gospel Music's top musicians. Dear Friends,
Words cannot begin to express our gratitude and appreciation for all of the kindness, well wishes, and prayers for my husband, Tracy Stuffle, and our family.
As most of you know, Tracy suffered a heart attack last week while at home. It was then determined that he would need open heart surgery and five bypasses. The doctors were able to perform the surgery on Friday, August 13, without any issues, and Tracy is currently resting comfortably. We are expecting him to be released from the hospital on Tuesday, August 17, to begin his recovery at home. Our family has been overwhelmed at the love and support from thousands across this land. “Thank you” seems so inadequate, but please know that it is from the heart. God has truly given my husband a second chance, for which we are so grateful.
We know that we have a long road ahead of us for Tracy’s recovery, but God is faithful. Many people have asked, “What can we do?” Tracy and I ask two things of our many friends across the country. First and foremost, we humbly ask for your prayers as we begin the next phase of Tracy’s rehabilitation and full recovery. Secondly, it would mean so much to Tracy and I that you support the group as they continue to travel in our absence. Tracy will not be on stage for several weeks, and I believe my place should be by his side as his wife, confidante, and primary caregiver. I do plan to go with the group when possible, but my priority will be Tracy’s care. Katy Peach, Troy’s wife, will be filling my position when I am not able to go with the group. (If you have ever heard her, you know she is an incredible singer!) Please know that the Perrys will be fulfilling all of our dates in the coming weeks. Your support will give us this much-needed time for Tracy to fully recover, and make the necessary adjustments in our lifestyle following this surgery.
Thank you again for your love and support. With Tracy’s full health, we believe the future is brighter than ever for the Perrys.
Love,
Libbi Perry Stuffle

Nashville, TN- Homeland Entertainment Group on behalf of The Toney Brothers would like thank all of you who have been faithfully praying for George Amon Webster and the Toney Brothers. We would like to report that George was released from the hospital on Thursday, August 12th. He looks good and is in great spirits and has returned home to Tennessee. His left arm is doing well and healing as expected. However, his fractured hip socket is healing slow and will require him to be off of it for an estimated six weeks. While all of this is positive news, we regret to inform you the test results of the mass found on George’s neck.
Doctors have discovered that George has cancer lesions on the back of his tongue that are spreading to the right side of his throat. So far, they say it is 9 cm in size, is non-operable and must be treated with chemotherapy and radiation. The doctors in Illinois are referring George to someone in Nashville to treat his cancer condition. Doctors have also voiced concern for George’s lack of eye sight due to his cataract problem. They feel this impairment will slow down his physical therapy process since he now cannot see enough to be mobile. Doctors also do not wish to start chemotherapy treatment, then have to pause for a cataract surgery.
The current plan formed by George’s doctors is for him to have cataract surgery then begin physical therapy and cancer treatment.
Please continue to keep George and the Toney Brothers in your prayers. For more updates concerning George, please visit http://www.toneybrothers.com or http://www.homelandentertainmentgroup.com

I pray that this month finds everyone healthy and having a great time trying to stay COOL! That is so hard to do when the bank clock reads 101 degrees and the heat index is 110 degrees. I will leave the puns of how hot it is to the readers.
One thing that is COOL, NQC is fast approching and the southern gospel family reunion starts. Yep, you read right. We-Are-Family. It is one of the largest gatherings and yet it feels like it is just a reunion of old friends and new ones are added every year. I can't wait to get some of that ice cream (butter pecan). Seeing everyone mingle around and talk to people they don't know as if they have known each other for 100 years is special.
Speaking of 100 years, it is COOL that Southern Gospel Music has been around now for 100 years. Correct me if I am wrong but NO other music genrue has been around longer in the United States. Really Cool.
The Cavaliers Quartet, Along with all of the Song Garden Music Group artists from all labels are going to be part of a celebration of Southern Gospel Music's Heritage. The Cavaliers Quartet, along with folks like The Chuck Wagon Gang, The LeFevre Quartet, The Ball Brothers, The Webbs, Cannan's Crossing, Southern Heritage and many many more will be in the South Hall (Regional Showcase Area) Friday Sept. 17th around 11am. You will hear classic songs as well as some of your newer favorites. That Is Cool!
The other Cool thing is that our dear friend and multi-award winning songwriter, Dianne Wilkinson, will be at the showcase. She will be telling the story behind the songs "God Is" and "I'll Keep Trustin' On". NOW THAT IS COOL! You do not want to miss this. All of this is FREE. Can't beat that with a rubber hammer.
Come by Booths 109-117 and 202-216 to see The Cavaliers Quartet as well as all of the Song Garden Music Group artists.
SEE YOU THERE!!!

Nashville, TN (Nashville BMG) August 14th, 2010 – Nashville BMG has begun to reissue the Gospel songs of ‘Country’ Johnny Mathis. The first of the series, The Gospel Songs – Volume 1, was released for the first in digital format this month.
Country Johnny Mathis, not to be confused with the pop singer of the same name, was known as both a Country singer and songwriter during the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s. As a BMI Award winning songwriter Mathis had songs recorded by many of the most formative artists of Country Music during that time frame, seven who are now Country Music Hall of Fame inductees. As an artist, he had several Top 20 charting songs as a soloist and with the duet, Jimmy and Johnny as well as regular performances on such Country iconic stages as The Louisiana Hayride and The Grand Ole Opry.
In 1964, Mathis, the son of an East Texas holiness preacher, had a salvation experience that returned him to his roots of faith. This on the heels of a Top 20 song with United Artists and a nomination for "New Male Vocalist In Country Music" by Billboard Magazine. He began to evangelize across the nation both singing and preaching while delivering albums for the Pickwick, Hilltop and Little Darling labels.
Now for the first time in 40 years, the Gospel songs of Country Johnny Mathis are being reissued and are available via download through the major digital music sites such as iTunes and Rhapsody. For more information regarding Country Johnny Mathis visit http://www.CountryJohnnyMathis.com.

New Project To Debut Next Month During National Quartet Convention
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – (August 14, 2010) – Sunday Edition, one of Nashville’s favorite groups, is excited about the release of the trio’s highly anticipated new recording – Sunday Worship. Sunday Worship is a conceptual recording that not only pays tribute to the group’s history singing in the church, but it also takes a look at the current landscape of church music.
Deon Unthank of Sunday Edition said, “All three of us have fond memories of going to our grandparents’ old country churches and singing along in worship with nothing more than our voices an old, out-of-tune piano. So, that inspired us when recording this record to strip it down to the way it used to be and just sing these songs from the bottom of our soul with nothing but a piano and the voices God gave us.”
Sunday Worship consists of six cherished hymns and five modern worship songs set to an acoustic, piano only accompaniment.
Deon Unthank, who also co-produced the record, said, “Everywhere we go, people ask us to sing one of two things – either worship songs or hymns. Well, this release focuses on both those aspects of church music.”
“We are so excited about this release, because we really feel like you can sense the heart and emotion behind these songs,” mentioned Amy Marie Unthank of Sunday Edition. “We picked these songs, because they mean something to each of us.”
Sunday Worship was recorded with the concept of “less-is-more” in mind. Very little digital enhancements and processing was used on the vocals, and the group opted out of using vocal stacks and vocal alignment for this album.
“More than anything, we wanted this recording to feel authentic. We didn’t want it to sound over-produced and over-processed. What’s great is that you do get to hear blemishes in our voices and moments where we could have sang it better – but we wanted to make it sound like we were in an old country church singing these songs – just like we remember. We hope we accomplished that,” mentioned co-producer and Sunday Edition member Chris D. Unthank.
Sunday Worship features an equal share of modern and classic worship tunes like “Blessed Assurance,” “Precious Lord,” “The Old Rugged Cross,” “Indescribable,” “Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone),” and “Friend of God,” in addition to many more songs.
Vocals for the new album were recorded at Square One Studio in Franklin, Tennessee. The project was produced by group members Chris and Deon Unthank, and all vocals were arranged by Sunday Edition. Jeff Duffield mixed and mastered the recording, while tracks for the album were performed and recorded by Bobby McAllister (for Salem-Sound in Winston-Salem, NC). The group enlisted the help of Deon’s pastor Johnny Minick for the piano on “Feeling Mighty Fine.” Steve Allen and Aaron Minick also assisted in engineering for the project.
Sunday Worship will debut and be available to purchase for the first time during the week of the National Quartet Convention in Louisville, Kentucky from September 13-18, 2010. Sunday Edition will be performing on Monday afternoon’s Featured Artist Showcase from 3:00-4:00 p.m. and will be singing selections from the new release at the showcase.
Sunday Edition recently released their follow-up to the smash-hit “He Bore a Cross.” The new single, titled “Mercy Walks a Road,” was once again produced by Glen Bates and written by Bates and Glen Ashworth. The new song is another special single release with BSA World Records.
The song is currently available for radio stations to download via Chuck Peters’ SG Show Prep and was released to radio through DJ Man Promotions and BSA World Records. In addition, the song is also being promoted to radio by TS Promotions, the Rick Hendrix Company, and Music City Media Group.

Every once in a while I just ask myself questions, and ponder over the answers to them...I imagine most of you do exactly the same thing.
Without going into all the reasons I bring this up, I'll simply share this one question with all of you, and not elaborate to much on it for now(although I could).
Is anyone else besides me old enough to remember when the adherents to Islam were called Moslems, and not "Muslims", a corruption of the name Moslems popularized by a Islamic cult which developed in the first half of the 20th Century here in the United States?
Islam is not understood well in this part of the world, not even by many of those who follow it here.
I'm just askin'. ![]()

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – (August 11, 2010) – Vine Records/Crossroads recording artist and 2009 Dove Award nominee HisSong performed at the 2010 Night Vision Festival in Olathe, Colorado last month. Additional artists who performed at the event included Michael W. Smith, Brandon Heath, Third Day, American Idol's Phil Stacey, Matthew West, Francesca Battistelli, Kutless, Skillet, The Katinas and more. HisSong was the only Southern Gospel group to perform for the three-day festival, which had more than 15,000 people in attendance each day.
HisSong owner/manager Dennis Humphries states, “We were very honored to be a part of this event. Our friend Victoria Hearst, who is such an inspiration to us all, brought HisSong to Colorado in 2009 for another event and immediately asked us to be a part of this festival. We were very concerned about being the only Southern Gospel group and how the crowd would accept our music. However, we were very pleased with the response we got. Anywhere God opens the doors for us, we're ready to walk through.”
In addition, HisSong also performed at the Stamps-Baxter School of Music in Murfreesboro, Tennessee at Middle Tennessee State University on Wednesday, July 15, 2010.
“We were honored to get an invitation from Ben Speer to perform an hour concert to the students and faculty,” said Dennis. “I attended the Stamps-Baxter School of Music several years ago, and it has helped me in so many ways in my ministry and career. It was great getting to talk with the students and faculty at our product table following the concert. It brought back so many memories of when I was a student.”

NASHVILLE, TN - The Duffields have announced their booking agreement with EHA-Nashville. Since the early 70s, the Duffields have been creating inspiring music. Their rich, layered compositions now span over 30 albums. Sue, with her incredible vocal ability, and Jeff, a powerful keyboardist, perform a jazz and soul influenced gospel with their backing band that is brilliantly crafted and uplifting. The Duffields had been perfecting this “worship” sound for nearly a decade before it became popular.
Currently, they are touring the country, both breathing new life into classic hymns and energizing audiences with original music. Looking to add new venues to their busy tour, they are excited to be working with Evie Hawkins of EHA. They state "We are busier than ever, sharing our faith filled songs of worship. We are proud to have EHA working with us!" Evie notes, "It's a tremendous honor to work with a couple I have been a fan of for so many years. From their days with the Sammy Hall Singers until now, Jeff and Sue continue to entertain and uplift. I am very excited to be connected even in the smallest way to their music ministry!"
Both Jeff and Sue are also adding individual ministry appearances to their schedules. In these instances, they will be appearing separately in order to testify of their own experiences as well as delight the crowd with uplifting song. We wish to announce that Rick Fair has accepted the position of bass singer with Southern Sound Quartet. Rick brings a long and rich history with great quartet groups including Palmetto State and Hovie Lister and The Statesmen Quartet. We went through an exhaustive search for the right man, both in fine bass voice and Christian character, and Rick is the perfect fit.
Rick replaces Alan Brewster who is leaving the group to have more time to devote to his business in Ringgold, GA. Alan has made many friends during his tenure with Southern Sound, and many in the industry have come to recognize him as one of the finest bass singers ever to grace a stage. Alan and his lovely wife Pam will be missed more than words can say. They brought a touch of grace and character to Southern Sound, and are lasting members of our extended family. Although Alan will not be part of our touring ensemble, he will in fact, always be a member of Southern Sound and very much loved by all of us. Alan, we wish you and Pam only the best, as you have given your best, not only to us, but to your Heavenly Father. These two kind and generous people are the real thing. They both love the Lord and prove it everyday in their walk with Him. Be well my friends and go with God!
And now a new chapter begins with Rick Fair as the anchor of our group. Rick's calm laid-back style is a perfect fit for our group. His voice is huge and powerful, and we look forward to the months and years ahead. This decision did not come lightly, but only after many hours of praying and asking God for His will. We had many great candidates contact us with interest in becoming our new bass singer, and we are honored by your interest in Southern Sound. In the end, Rick was both the voice and the man we felt fit us the best. Help us welcome Rick Fair to Southern Sound Quartet. And, be sure to come hear Rick on his first engagement with Southern Sound at Grand Ole Gospel Reunion in Greenville, SC in mid August.

It is hard to believe that our subject this month has never been the subject of one of our history articles, but he hasn’t. Until now.
When it comes to singing, songwriting, live performance, promotion, or simply being beloved among fans of gospel music, few could equal or surpass one Wally Fowler.
Born John Wallace Fowler on February 15, 1917 near Adairsville, GA, the young Fowler was the son of a successful cotton farmer, called by some the “cotton king of Bartow County, GA”, who, like many, saw his wealth disappear due to the effects of the Great Depression of the late 1920s and early 1930s.
The Fowler family’s lot was so bad that young Wallace (as he was called then) had to support them on the $7.20 he made per week working for a florist. But even then, he loved singing, and along the way, formed a quartet called the Harmony Quartet based in Gadsden, Alabama.
In 1936, rising gospel music star John Daniel heard Fowler sing, and immediately hired him to sing lead for his quartet, the soon-to-be-famous John Daniel Quartet. At that time, the quartet (like many others of its’ day) , sang a mixture of gospel and country songs, and Fowler soon developed a flair for country-style singing as well, becoming known as the quartet’s “secular solo singer.”
Wallace was writing gospel and country songs by that time, and one of his better known country songs of that time was an original number called “I’m Sending You Two Red Roses”. The song earned a triple encore for the Daniel Quartet when they sang it on a 1940 “All-Night Broadcast” from Dallas’s Sportatorium, a promotional brainchild of gospel music patriarch V.O. Stamps. Stamps’ promotional acumen and ideas would later serve as a major influence on Wallace Fowler’s career.
Another event that would prove to be a major influence on Fowler’s career was the John Daniel Quartet’s joining the staff of the famous Grand Ole Opry in 1942. There, the quartet continued its’ combination of gospel and country music, and it was the first gospel quartet to reach such national prominence. Fowler and the John Daniel Quartet were taking gospel music to new levels of visibility and popularity.
By 1944, Fowler’s talents had drawn such notice that he got an offer from a Knoxville radio station to form his own group and join a popular midday radio show there. Despite Daniel’s insistence that it would not work out for him, Fowler accepted the challenge, left the Daniel Quartet, and began to assemble his own group.
Two things happened when Fowler left the Daniel Quartet. One, he decided to shorten his surname to Wally. And two, he could not find the members of the band he’d hired.
Needing musicians, he hired a number of the staff musicians at WNOX on the spot, and the Georgia Clodhoppers were born. One of the better musicians in that band was a young guitarist named Chet Atkins, who later became a country music superstar on record, in the studio, and as a record company executive.
But Wally also wanted a gospel quartet to front the band, and that took a little longer in coming. When Lee Roy Abernathy’s Four Tones Quartet broke up around that time, two of their members, Johnny New and Curley Kinsey, joined up with Wally and Lon (Deacon) Freeman to form a new version of the Harmony Quartet, the same name that Fowler used for his first quartet in the 1930s. Sometimes the Georgia Clodhoppers would back them, other times just a guitar.
But Wally decided to change the name of the quartet after a series of Saturday concerts for schoolchildren in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. Oak Ridge was a place where the new atomic bomb was being built. After a year, Fowler was so taken with the youngsters’ response to the Harmony Quartet that he decided to rename the group after their hometown.
After the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima to help win World War II, the Oak Ridge Quartet joined Red Foley on the Grand Ole Opry. From 1946 to 1950, the Quartet was a part of that famous institution. Again, Fowler had succeeded in bringing gospel music to the mass public with success.
But in 1949, three men left the Oak Ridge Quartet. Undaunted, Fowler took control of another group, the Calvary Quartet, and renamed them the Oak Ridge Quartet. The quartet continued to be one of the outstanding groups of its’ day.
But by 1957, the group’s fortunes had fallen on hard times. And Wally Fowler was beginning to incur debts. To escape one of those debts, he sold the rights to the “Oak Ridge Quartet”’s name to a young singing talent named Smitty Gatlin, who Fowler hired to manage the quartet back in 1956. That version of the Oak Ridge Quartet would later become the Oak Ridge Boys, and become one of gospel music’s most successful quartets, and later still would become one of the most popular vocal groups in the history of country music.
Fowler tried once more to capitalize on his association with the Oak Ridge name, forming another quartet with that name in the early 1960s. Fowler was taken to court in 1964 by Gatlin and his Oak Ridge Boys, and was ordered by that court decision to stop using that or any similar name in the future.
But one of Fowler’s other ideas earned him justified recognition. Influenced by V.O. Stamps’ “All-Night Broadcasts” in Dallas in the 1940s, Fowler began a series of singings from Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium in November 1948, and by the spring of 1949, those “All-Night Sings” were a staple of the first Friday of each month at the Ryman, and soon they spread throughout the South, the Southeast, and the Southwest. People all over those areas loved the many gospel groups singing well into the night. These singings brought gospel quartet music into the national spotlight,,,and once more, Fowler was at the center of it, and used his considerable talents and creativity toward that end.
Fowler was also featured often on TV in the 1950s and 1960s, and featured many of the top gospel artists of the day on his own show during those years.
Fowler continued to record many gospel recordings all through the 1960s and 1970s, and even had a minor country hit, “Lo And Behold” in 1984.
Among the many gospel songs Fowler composed, his best known is probably “Wasted Years”. It is considered a gospel music standard. The extremely personable Fowler was known to gospel music fans as “The Man With A Million Friends”.
On July 3, 1994, Fowler apparently suffered a heart attack while fishing in Tennessee, and his body was discovered floating in the water.
But the name Wally Fowler lives on as a legendary gospel music singer, songwriter, promoter, personality, and discoverer of talent. Besides the many gospel singers he mentored, he is also credited with discovering the legendary country singer Patsy Cline.
We hope you enjoyed this look back at one of gospel music’s true legends, and look forward to you all checking back here next month.

Fresh off a wonderful night at the 2010 SGN Music Week, we are still riding high. Everyone at SoGospelNews always does a wonderful job at putting together this Event and this year was no different. Thank you to everyone who had a hand in this Event. You once again made it a very special night!
It is so hard to believe that it has been two years now since we have had the opportunity to take the Ministry of Crystal River forward. It is truly amazing what God can do. We look back now and reflect and it turns this month's article into a praise report. We are amazed at the success of our first CD, "Mercy River". Starting with the song "I Stand in Awe" that quickly made its way up the charts! Now "Mercy River is playing on the waves and getting amazing response! We are still getting emails weekly about how this song ministered to someone and helped them with a problem they were facing. Now we are releasing our second CD, "Start a Revival"! The music is on the disc and the cover and case looks great and we are now in pressing. It should be out in a couple weeks ready for all our friends. Then next month we are all geared up to head to Dollywood to the Singing News Fan Awards for a night that we would have never dreamed of. Just to be on the "invite list" is amazing, but to be there because you are nominated for an award!!!! We are blown away!!! We thank God for everything he has done in the past two years in the lives of Crystal River and we are looking forward to the third year. Heat….here in Illinois we have plenty of it. Today promises to be a carbon copy of yesterday, about 103 in the shade. Unlike Arizona, we can’t even say “it’s a dry heat” because humidity reigns supreme here in the Midwest. While sitting up at the hospital with my dad yesterday, the subject of summers past came up with my brothers, Don and Bill. They were reminiscing about the summer of 1954. No air conditioning anywhere and 115 degrees actual temperature….not even accounting for humidity. I’d like to pretend that I wasn’t here yet, but I was. Just a mere baby.
I recall like it was yesterday the big box fan with its huge blades that sat on a crate in front of the window in the back bedroom. Every screened window in the house was open, and even though the fan was doing its best, sleeping was still miserable. There was just no way to get comfortable.
Come morning, it wasn’t any better because mom cranked up the stove to cook. There just seemed to be no escape from the heat. I do remember asking mom if I could help hang the clothes out to dry on the line. No, it wasn’t just to help her. It was to handle the cool, wet clothes. I’m sure she probably knew that.
The house was just unbearably hot. My sister Darlene would wash her auburn locks and then sit outside in a kitchen chair to twist pin curls into her hair…until I ran over her ingrown toenail with the tireless rim of my tricycle, which cut her beauty routine short and sent me scrambling for cover.
We had a rectangular green vinyl wading pool with metal seats in the four corners, and we loved it when mom would fill it up and we could flop around in it. Of course, the way my sisters and I were brought up, swimming attire was an old dress; but we didn’t care. All we wanted was a chance to cool off. Even our yellow chow, King, gave in to the heat and climbed into a washtub full of water, leaving little more than his nose sticking out.
Once in a while we would be given a nickel to run down to the corner market and get a popsicle or my favorite to this day, a Dreamsicle. There is nothing so wonderful as cold ice cream and orange sherbet touching your tongue, and feeling it cool all the way down your parched throat. I remember the price creeping up to six cents, then seven, and at that point my dad was done…they were just getting too expensive.
At some point in the sixties, Sam’s Market disappeared, and an ice cream truck would tour the neighborhood clanging it’s bell and sending kid’s running for money. I will never forget my sister Sheryl driving the boy across the street crazy with a cowbell as she hid behind bushes and made her way from the front yard to the back, making it sound as though the “ice cream truck” was nearing and then driving away. He would run for all he was worth screaming, “MOM, the ice cream man, the ice cream man!” And then sadly, “HE’S LEAVING, HURRY, HE’S LEAVING!.” Mean? Maybe. But hilarious to watch. We had to do something to keep from going mad from the heat.
The heat hindered everything you tried to do. You could dress up and go to church, but by the time you arrived your hair was sweated down into a million ringlets. There was no air conditioning there either, so the best you could hope for was a “funeral home” fan, stiff cardboard stapled to a stick.
I remember standing at the foot of the old church steps waiting to march in for Vacation Bible School. The sun was scortching hot and I began to feel sick. The next thing I knew, everything started turning dark and I heard someone yell, “ She’s goin’ down…grab her!” I don’t remember anything else until I woke up in the cool, damp dungeon of a creepy church basement with the old lady I was most terrified of standing over me with a damp cloth. Mom used to call her an old saint, but to me she was just the old hag who narrowed her eyes and pointed a bony finger at you if you talked in church. She seemed kinder somehow that day and I began to think she may actually be human…still scary, but human nonetheless.
For the past couple of years, it definitely seems like the heat is on in my life. My husband fell on the ice and broke his hip; I had pneumonia; my son lost his job; our dearest friend lost his leg to complications of diabetes, then I lost my Mother, and just recently my job. My daughter’s fiance was diagnosed with a life-altering illness, and my 98 year old Dad is right now in his third week at the hospital. The trips back and forth and the uncertainty of it all are getting to the entire family. Sleeping is difficult and it’s hard to catch a mental break.
All I can figure from this whole thing is that we must be doing something right. The three Hebrew children were obviously doing something right, and that’s what landed them in the fiery furnace. The encouraging thing, though, is that the Lord brought them out, and incidentally, the only thing that was burned was the ropes that bound them.
The Bible talks about the times of refreshing, and I like to think of it as plunging headlong into a deep blue pool of cool, cool water and popping up renewed. I could use that about now….along with a Dreamsicle. Yeah, that sounds good.
Wishing you cool times ahead.
Janice

Recently my wife Sue and I found our selves in our home state of New Jersey, scheduled to minister during the Sunday morning service at a church pastored by our good, long-time friends.
The church’s previous pastor is the father of the famous pop group, the Jonas Brothers. From all accounts, the Jonas family are good people, good musicians.
Arriving the night before the service, we were hosted in the parsonage and were given a room that at one time was a bedroom for one of the brothers. (Don’t know who) Though the Jonas Brothers no longer live there, there exists evidence of their one time residence in the house, things such as marks on the closet wall that noted the growth spurts of the various brothers. In addition, there were various and sundry boyhood items that had been left behind in the aftermath of their move.
Our friends tell many stories about cars pulling into their driveway at odd hours. People will get out, knock on the door, and ask to “look around” the house where the boys once lived. When their request is denied, things occasionally “lifted” from the yard. Souvenirs, if you will.
We smile, and sometimes look down our noses at such behavior. Juvenile and boorish is what comes to mind.
But do we sometimes do similar things with our music and Ministry? Are we guilty of trying to be “like” another
successful artist, singing their songs, using their arrangements, etc?
God has made each one of us distinctly unique. The Word says, “We are fearfully and wonderfully made”. Each one of us brings our own talents and skill sets to our music. Since we all know that God doesn’t make “mistakes”, then we all have something new to sing and say.
The problem with that? It takes time, work, sweat, practice, and perseverance. All that fun stuff. But isn’t that our calling? To “study to show thy self approved”, and to perform “skillfully”?
I believe if we perform our “due diligence” in the task at hand, that in due season God will bless our efforts, and He will “elevate” us to the position HE wants us to have.
Then maybe...someone will look in a closet for our growth chart.
Praise the Lord !!!! What a wonderful Year so far. Time is passing so swiftly and so much has happened this year good and bad, but one thing we Know for sure is that God is on the Throne and He loves his Children so very Much…..
I was reading in Titus yesterday and today and this just jump right out at me with a light in from Heaven… Titus 2; 10-15 right here in these few scripture it tell us that God has given us the power to overcome this world and how to do it. We want to make so hard for ourselves when Jesus did the hardest part, dying for all of us and all we have to do is live for him everyday to the best of our abilities… sometimes we sell ourselves short. We are capable of doing a lot more than we want to do sometimes… (me included) we get so set in our own little world…yes little.. The world is a big place with a lot of needs. God tell us to show good fidelity that people will “adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things” vs. 12: Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lust, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world… “then it goes on to tell us … Looking for the Blessed HOPE, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ.!!!! vs. 14 : Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good words…. Last words in chp 2 say… Let no man despise thee (loathe or scorn)
This should get us so excited folks, We are given the hope of the appearing of the one that died for us , gave us the HOPE of eternal life and the authority over the devil and all his evil games he likes to play on us.
Today’s world and media wants us to think that certain things are just a-okay now and they are not… and we have to speak up and out loud that we are not okay with the media trying to kill the family unit… God’s word has not changed nor will it ever …
Just think about what you do everyday… we all know that God is all seeing, but if God was sitting next to you walking next to you and everyone could see him, would we participate, do or act out in some of the things we have compromised in our lives? I know we all would have to make a few changes I’m sure
I was talking to my son the other day, and we were talking about people giving their lives to God, asking him into their lives when the possibility of eternal life in hell or heaven?? When it hits you in the face, when the doctors tell you, you may die …. Why do people wait for that? There is no answer for that except… we think it won’t happen to us… some don’t get the chance… death is cruel and swift.. No alarm clock to say hey dude, you have 10 min. to get your heart ready, you are going to die today... Let’s not take that chance... Let us live our lives as Jesus wants us too, lets live it to the fullest, the Joy, peace & love that comes from having a relationship with Jesus, well there is nothing that can compare…try walking with Jesus, there’s not anything he won’t do for you
Something to think about… if you do not want to live for God and be one of God’s kids, why do you think He has to protect you ? oooouch… !!! …He doesn’t but……., He loves you soooooooo very much.. He already sent his son Jesus to die for you all you have to do is accept his love…
Lots of Love to you all…. I hope you have a wonderful August…

Several years ago, our trio was singing at a large Baptist Church in Alabama. We had really prayed for God to move in a powerful way, and He did not disappoint us. His presence was very rich. When the service was over I went to our product table in the lobby. It looked like we were going to run out of Cd's that night. But isn't that the dream of every Gospel Singer? We all want to sing to a large crowed and then sell every piece of product we have. Well, that's what happened that night.
When I got down to the last CD of our latest project, the man who bought it made a statement to me that has stuck in my mind ever since. He was a young man, who looked to be in early twenties. He did not look, dress, or act like a Southern Gospel fan. As he placed the money in my hand for the CD, he said "I can't believe you made me like a style of music that I hate". He was surprised at himself for even wanting to buy it. But he was very happy to get the last copy.
As some of you know, I have never been much of a fan of Contemporary Praise and Worship Music. I really don't care for the beat, the chord progressions or the lyric structure of so many of the songs I've heard from this genre of music. So I can relate to how that young man in Alabama felt. I have thought at times that I would never enjoy any modern Contemporary Praise and Worship Music. I have had many friends try to convert me into being a fan, but the bottom line is there are many other music styles I like better. That's just my own personal taste.
I have heard many of the current Praise and Worship standards that are being sung in churches today. The music of Hillsong, Third Day, Israel Houghton, and Chris Tomlin are everywhere. I thought I'd never hear one that I actually enjoyed. But then one night, I saw and heard Chris Tomlin singing one of his own songs, and suddenly I could understand why so many people have been drawn to this music.
He was performing his huge hit, "How Great Is Our God". I had heard this song sung in many churches hundreds of times, and it never moved me before. It never touched me, and never made me want to worship. But as I watched this man of God sing it, something inside me agreed with his spirit, and I began to sing along. I felt compelled to worship. And now I am thrilled every time I hear a worship leader begin to sing it. I immediately join in. But it's not because of the music. It's not the chord progressions or even the melody that got my attention. The lyrics are so simple, that they almost seem elementary. So why do I love this song? It's written in a style that I thought I hated.
When the Spirit of God is in full force, then style and personal taste have to take a back seat to what the Lord has in mind. And anything the Lord does is beautiful. I've often wondered how I could have heard that song so many times and never have been moved by it before. The only answer that I can come up with is that I had never heard anyone sing it with the authority, power and anointing that Chris Tomlin did. It seemed as though every time I heard it before, it was just words and notes, nothing more. But the Spirit of God resting on Chris, made it alive and powerful to me. Now when I listen to other Chris Tomlin tunes, I listen with a whole new attitude. Amazing Grace, My Chains Are Gone, is another composition that seems to usher me into God's presence just as quickly as the traditional music that I have always preferred.
There are many people who like Contemporary Praise and Worship music just because they like the style. That's OK. There are others who like Traditional and Southern Gospel Music just because that Music Style appeals to their musical taste. And that's alright too. God created it all, from Beethoven to Bluegrass.
And it's ok to like any style you want, just because you prefer that kind of music. But I have found that when the Holy Spirit gets involved in the performance of a song, all style barriers and walls will come down. The Spirit will cause a teenager who prefers only hard driving Rock music, with lasers and smoke bombs, to be moved by a Greater Vision song, or one by the Hoppers. Likewise, the Holy Spirit can cause an old traditional Southern Gospel fan like myself to weep and worship God at the first strains of a Chris Tomlin tune.
Oh, and by the way, have y'all heard Toby Mac? Wow!!! Apparently he has a serious relationship with God too.
Until next time, keep on writing!

There is an old Chinese proverb that says, ““Sow a thought, reap an action; sow an action, reap a habit; sow a habit, reap a character; sow a character, reap a destiny.” Habits are powerful influences on your lives either for good or bad. While any list of bad habits would be purely subjective, there are some examples of bad habits, like worry, cursing, gambling, gossip, or addictions to food, drugs, tobacco or alcohol that might make anyone’s list.
To paraphrase this proverb, you could say, “What you thought, and what you did, determined what you are.” Therefore, whether you suffer from obesity, addictions, anger, or depression, you are now the product of your thoughts. Your actions and feelings are then produced by your thoughts.
After many years of practicing bad habits, you may wonder if it is possible to turn over a new leaf. The answer is simple: the accomplishment, however, requires some diligent work on your part. Behavioral Modification experts state that it takes 21 days to dehabituate a behavior. It then requires an additional 21 days to rehabituate a new behavior. At this point it should become second nature to you.
Therefore, if you can commit to 42 days of conscientious discipline, you can see a radical change in your habits, your character, and your destiny. The good news is the power of a bad habit can be broken and replaced with a good one in just six short weeks.
I want to share the 7 Steps I offer my clients who wish to break a bad habit. These are stated simply, but can be elaborated upon in private sessions.
1. PRAY THE SERENITY PRAYER by asking God to help you change what you have the ability to change.
2. CHANGE YOUR ATTITUDE about the behavior. Stop accepting it as appropriate and think of it as something that you must remove from your life.
3. STOP DOING THE BAD ACTION. When you stop reinforcing the behavior it will become less dominant in your life.
4. REPLACE THE BAD HABIT with a good behavior (i.e. gum instead of cigarettes, tonic water instead of alcohol).
5. BE PATIENT AND FORGIVING OF YOURSELF through the process. You are in involved in a marathon, not a sprint. You may suffer some setbacks, but keep plodding along. You will make it, if you do not give up.
6. REWARD YOURSELF for small accomplishments. Even Dr. Ivan Pavlov, the noted Russian
physiologist, psychologist, and physician, understood the importance of this principle of
reward.
7. TESTIFY OF YOUR SUCCESSES. Tell your friends and family how many days you have been, “clean and sober.” It will encourage others who may be struggling with unwanted habits, and it will motivate you to stay on track.
Habits are not unbreakable. If you have something that you are unhappy with, if it ain’t broke, then you need to break it. You will never regret it. There is much more that can be added to this subject. If you need a little help getting started, I am here just for you…let’s talk.
****A Personal Word to Our Readers from Dr. Frazier****
Please feel free to share your questions, observations, or insights with our readers and me. Website: http://www.donfrazier.com

Have you ever wanted to just quit? I can be accused of many things but one thing I can’t be accused of is being a “Quitter!” I think growing up playing sports really instilled this into my life, and shaped the person I am today. The problem that many of us face today is not that we are “Quitters” cause we all want to accomplish something, but the problem is we put time and effort in a belief system that is failing based on self-will not dependency on Christ!
A Pastor friend of mine who traveled with a Contemporary Christian Band that was on major tours with the best of the best in CCM told me “that a majority of music groups only survive for 3 years.” And when he told me this we were just beginning our 3rd year of ministry and I must say that I did not take him seriously. Until things got rough! Mom came down with a staph infection, we had no money, no bookings, no friends, no answered prayers, no miracles, and everything seemed to be going against us! It was awful, so we came to the point where we had a group meeting to “Quit” At the end of the meeting we decided to finish the month out then call it “Quits”. We agreed, so the last planned date was in Shreve, Ohio. There is not a lot in Shreve, Ohio but there is a COW BARN and that’s where we were scheduled to sing! 20-25 people showed up we sang and as I began to load up the equipment I thought “This is it, our singing ministry is going to end in a cow barn in Shreve, Ohio”
I walked to the table and Mom was talking to an old man who kind of looked like Santa Claus. He then walked up to me shook my hand, smiled and said “Hi! I’m Dan DeHass I’m an evangelist and I would like for you all to come sing with me in some revival meetings!” At first I thought he was crazy! Then he began to name drop all these singers that he traveled with in the past, I then thought he was crazy and a liar! Not a good combination for me! He handed me his card and on the back of his card it said “JESUS NEVER FAILS”
To make a long story short we have teamed up with Dr. DeHass, and his best friend Dr. Norm Pratt to form the “Old Fashion Weekend Revival Team” and in less then a year we have traveled over 3,000 miles together have dates scheduled for 2011, and seen over 100 people come to know Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior! Why??? We are learning to put our trust in the one who never “Quit” the only one who never fails, the only one who the angel proclaimed “for with God nothing shall be impossible!” If we trust Christ to save our souls why don’t we trust Him in every other aspect of our lives! Is everything perfect? No! But the peace that we have found resting in Christ, and the Joy we have found serving Him will make a winner out of a quitter every time!

1. Before we start talking about the Dove Brothers new album - let's take a minute and talk about their new #1 hit "Hold On." What was the inspiration for that song?
I really wish that there was some grand story to go along with this song - but there really isn't! I had the idea of just writing a song that encouraged believers to hold on - it won't be long before we get to see Jesus face to face! I think the song turned out pretty good! The people who have come out to our concerts have really enjoyed the song!
2. This is only the second song to reach #1 on the Singing News Chart for you guys. The first was the ministry minded "I Can Pray". "Hold On" seems to be strikingly different in topic and musical approach. Why do you think radio has attached to both songs so well?
That is an interesting question - one that we contemplate often on the bus. We have yet to really figure out what it is that radio wants from us! Sometimes, it's a more ministry oriented song like "I Can Pray" or "One More Miracle" - and then other times they want a more fluffy, drive-time song like "Hold On" or "Anything But Ordinary." We just try to make the music that we make, and we hope that something we do will connect with program directors and listeners. "Hold On" has done very well for us, and we are honored that radio thought enough of it to take it to #1! We're excited about our new single too - "If I Knew Then"!
3. The Dove Brothers have been on a musical journey over the last 5 years that has seen the group go from being a straight ahead traditional quartet to a group with a solid country sound. Explain that process for us.
I get this kind of question all the time - about why we changed the Dove Brothers sound - and the only answer I can give them is that it's just the Dove Brothers - one song at a time. We sing the kind of stuff that we enjoy listening to and that the people that enjoy our music and come out to our concerts like from us. For us - we started moving towards that more country sound because it was what we liked - and obviously it has resonated with the fans of Southern Gospel music as well. We're excited about the direction that we are heading in - and you never really know what the Dove Brothers will record next. HA!
4. Tell us about your new recording - Unshakeable!
Unshakeable is similar to our last few releases in that we've written and found some really great new tunes, but at the same time we dove back into the the 1970s and 1980s and found some real gems there to cover as well. We took on The Imperials' "Oh Buddha" and Dixie Echoes' "Good Ole Gospel Song" - with our spin on them as well. We also covered Won By One's #1 hit "King Jesus." Rascal Flatts has a hit song out now called "Unstoppable" that we decided to try and featured Jerry Martin on, and it is out of this world. It's a little bit of everything that we've been known for over the last few years!
5. Many of the responses generated from the new release say that it sounds like most of these songs will interpret well with your new live band. Was that intentional?
By all means. We've loved having the new band on stage with us each night - and most of these songs were chosen because of how easily they would translate in a live setting with a band. The guys have been doing an incredible job on these songs!
6. Introduce your new band to us.
Having the band on the road with us has made this the most exciting time to be on the road with this group. Adam Harman is our new piano player and most people know him from his time with the Kingdom Heirs. He's doing a great job for us! Devin Dove place the drums for us, and he is Eric's teenage son. Marc Peele rounds out the band playing bass for the Dove Brothers. They are doing so well, and the response from folks on the road has been amazing!
7. What has the response been like in regards to the new band?
These guys are all around great players and wonderful men of God. They add a great new dimension to our live sound. People really have enjoyed the spontaneity that they provide in our concerts, and they pick up on things real quick. It really has given the Dove Brothers a new energy, and we are so excited about what the future holds for us!
8. You recently announced that you guys would be hitting up more fairs and festivals this year. What are the thoughts behind that?
Southern Gospel artists used to sing at fairs and festivals all the time in the 1980s and 1970s - and unfortunately we've let that go. We've settled in on singing in churches now, but there's a big market there for singing to folks that have never heard of Southern Gospel music at these events. We hope that we can break in to this market not just so the Dove Brothers can succeed - but hopefully so that it will open doors for other artists to present their version of Gospel music to a new audience and so Southern Gospel can be heard by even more people. This is a great opportunity for us, and we look forward to where we go from here with it.
9. The Dove Brothers have always been one of the most forward-thinking groups out there. What can we expect from the group next?
Oh - you guys know me. I always have a few ideas up my sleeve! HA! I guess everyone will just have to wait and see where we go from here. You never know where the Dove Brothers will show up next!
10. Any additional information you would like to share?
Well first of all, we would like to thank all of you who are trying to make Southern Gospel music bigger and better with the Lord's help. We want to thank the fans for their support, and we thank God for his blessings. We have a new tour that we are working on for the fall and next year so be looking out for those dates. Also, be sure and call your local radio station and request our new single - "If I Knew Then"!

Georgia music industry members, friends and family of Georgia Music Hall of Fame member John L Carson, 77, gathered July 31 in Decatur, Ga. to celebrate his life.
Chaplain Danny Roland officiated and Randall Franks gave the eulogy.
Carson died July 27, 2010 at an Atlanta area hospital after suffering a heart attack and fall.
Carson combined his musical pedigree, talent and love of people to pioneer a career in Georgia's music industry. He was also a member of the Carolinas Country, Bluegrass and Gospel Hall of Fame and their Legend Award winner.
He was the grandson of the late Fiddlin' John Carson, who gave him his first fiddle at the age of 10 and the nephew of the late RCA recording artist, “Moonshine Kate” Carson.
He was inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 2009 receiving the Mary Tallent Pioneer Award, thus becoming the second member of his family alongside his grandfather. His cousin John R. Carson is a member of the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. The Atlanta, Ga. native from Cabbagetown began his journey through the music industry by booking bands at the age of 15.
He was a graduate of Roosevelt High School in Atlanta, where excelled in many sports, however his records in track and cross-country were not broken until the 1980's.
According to family members, the Atlanta Journal called him the greatest athlete to wear the Crimson Tide colors. He also attended the University of Georgia, Atlanta Division; Georgia State College; Georgia State University, and Atlanta Law School.
Throughout his wide-ranging career, he managed, promoted, produced, showcased and paid tribute to hundreds of country, bluegrass, gospel and western musicians.
He served in the U. S. Army in Korea.
As a music business entrepreneur with his partner Phyllis Cole, he founded Fiddlin’ John Carson Productions in 1970, including publishing companies - Fiddlin’ John Carson Publishers and Fid John Carson Publishers, show productions, management and record companies eventually bringing all the businesses under Cradle of Country Music Productions.
He and Cole founded the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame in 1982 honoring over a thousand people who have impacted the Atlanta and Georgia music scene over the last 28 years.
He also founded the Atlanta Country Music Academy in 1986 in Cabbagetown with the focus of educated young singers at no cost. He served as Co-Director of the Atlanta Society of Entertainers since 1994 and also served on the board of Friends of Georgia Music Festival board member for many years. In addition to his music career, he and Cole also formed the International Association of Security Guards in 1976, in order to give security personnel proper training. He coordinated this organization for several years.
Among the many artists’ careers his and Cole’s efforts impacted are American Idol runner-up and Broadway actress Diana DeGarmo, Country singers Mark Wills and Daron Norwood and Appalachian music and Television star Randall Franks, “Officer Randy Goode” from TV’s “In the Heat of the Night.”
“Johnny encouraged so many of us,” Franks said. “He advised, created opportunities, brought attention to our careers, taught, and preserved history, but mostly he was a friend through the ups and downs of pursuing a mainstream entertainment career who cheered us on. Georgia music just lost one of its greatest promoters and all of us just lost a true friend.”
He managed the country-rock group the Generals and produced shows with some of the biggest names in pop, country and rock music. According to Fiddlin’ John Carson Productions, as a philanthropist, he has help raise over $2 million for various charities.
Carson’s Home going service included performances by Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina performers Lorraine Parker, Joey Stuckey, Danny Roland, Randall Franks, Rick Smith, Mitzie Gardner, J. Max and Teena McKee, Jerry and Helen Burke, Dean Marsh and Cotton Evans. Phyllis Cole gave a tribute to Johnny and invited others to do the same. Many of the attendees gave brief tributes as well.
"As Johnny would say, it was a packed house," Phyllis said.
He was interred in a private ceremony at Melwood Cemetery in Stone Mountain, Ga.
Donations in Carson's memory may be made to the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame, 4051 Seven Hills Court, Stone Mountain, GA. 30083.

For the better part of my life, regardless of whatever has happened there, the presence of gospel music has always been a balm and a comfort...a soothing ocean of stability, direction, and inspiration in an otherwise stormy sea of life(boy, I sound like a gospel song, don't I?).
It got me through my college years, and those rough first post college years, when I actually had to start supporting myself financially.
And it got me through my first years in my chosen career field, even played a big role in that!
And it got me through the tense times around September 11, 2001, when no doubt all of us had a LITTLE uncertainty about our futures.
Now, though, the challenges are greater than ever.
The current economy is depressing, people are angry and contentious, the future seems so uncertain, and I am now entering the most topsy turvy, challenging, and potentially the most thrilling, exciting, and rewarding time of my life.
And, as always(because if it ain't broke, why try and fix it?), I'll have the sounds of gospel music as my life soundtrack as I enter this most exciting and challenging part of my life.
Some of my best friends are really concerned about how I'll manage all this...but, as has always been the case, I think I'll be just fine.
Keep those posts, comments, and most of all prayers, coming!
I'll be just fine! ![]()

Nashville, TN (August 4, 2010) – The Tana Lonon Agency (TLA) is pleased to announce the signing of SOUTHERN TRADITION to their talented roster of artists. The group will be scheduled exclusively the TLA.
Although they’re not a household name just yet, Southern Tradition has been making a big mark on Gospel music. They convey a blend of the true nostalgia Gospel music offers, with a fresh musical approach, including intricate harmonies and wonderful musicianship. Group members are Ken Taylor (lead), Mark Taylor (baritone), Thomas Nalley (tenor), Paul Allman (bass), and Tommy Fairchild (piano). Many people will remember Fairchild from his years with the GRAMMY and Dove winning Blackwood Brothers and Oak Ridge Boys.
The group second single, on Homeland Record’s Riversong label, “That's My Kind Of Music,” written by Jerry Kelso and Kristi Fitzwater, is impacting radio now. Their first single release, “Sing Along Song,” was well received at radio across the country. Both songs are from their debut album with Riversong, Sing Along With Southern Tradition.
Besides having a heart to make great music, the group’s first goal is to make a true ministry impact for the cause of Christ. They have a heart for souls and for the needs of others. They are honored to be the National Spokespersons for the International Christian Center for the Deaf (ICCD). They express that they have seen the impact music has, even on those who cannot hear. Their work with ICCD allows them to help get the word out to their audiences about ministering to the deaf in a multitude of ways.
The group’s lead singer, Ken Taylor, shared how all these gentlemen are feeling about the doors God is opening. “The hand of God never ceases to amaze me. He knows who, what, where, when, and how in our lives. I am in awe of His blessings and completely committed to walking the path that He lays out before us in this ministry. I know, without a doubt, that He led us to the Tana Lonon Agency. We feel honored to work with a lady who combines her love for God with a strong work ethic. We’re ready to continue to walk together, with Tana, into every opportunity for ministry that God brings to this quartet.”
Tana Lonon expressed her anticipation about working with Southern Tradition. “I feel so fortunate for the groups that God brings my way. Once in a while, a fairly new group comes along. Sometimes, from that first moment, I find myself feeling very strongly about learning more about them. The more I learned about Southern Tradition, the more I wanted to know. I love their heart and I love their determination to serve God. I am looking forward to our ministry partnership, as well as our great friendship.
