I Wish I Could Have Been There

The Perry's project, "This Is the Day" is certainly one of their best. Song after song is getting airplay, but more importantly, is blessing people all over. Their current song is "I Wish I Could Have Been There". It's a great up-tempo song, which always catches my attention. It was written by Wayne Haun and Joel Lindsey, so it has to be a great song. I was listening to the song, and began reflecting on it's message.

"I wish I could have been there
When the thousands were fed with just two fish and some bread
And see the little boy packin' up the rest.
I wish I could have been there
To see the lame that could leap and hear the dumb that could speak
And see the multitudes of people Jesus blessed.
I wish I could have seen the stone that went a'rollin' away
When they looked inside the door to where the grave clothes lay
I didn't see but I believe that He ascended in the air
And I really wish I could have been there."

How exciting it would have been to be an eye-witness of the miracles that Jesus did – to watch Him calm the storm, and heal the sick, and raise the dead. How exciting! As verse two says, "just reading ‘bout it couldn't compare." I don't know about you, but just thinking about it gets my glory bumps to rolling!

But then, I got to thinking about it; meditating on it. Why should we be wondering what all that was like? Of course, there aren't word to express what it would be like to simply stand in the presence of Jesus. But didn't He say ""Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father." (John 14:12 NKJV) Greater works? Greater than what Jesus did? That's what He said. I don't know what the "greater" part is. I've heard lots of ideas. But if we just stay with what He did: blessing, healing, delivering, that would be pretty good. The sad part is if you look around at most churches today, you don't see much of that. No wonder we sit around and dream about being back there to see it all. But we should be seeing it in our lives and in our churches today.

I've read the Bible cover to cover, and studied it most of my life, and I've never found a verse of Scripture where Jesus said, "You know all those miracles I did? Well, I'm just not going to do any of that any more. Oh, and that great works thing? Just forget it; I changed my mind." Nope. It's not there. What it does says is, " Jesus Christ the same yesterday , and to day, and for ever." (Hebrews 13:8) And, " Heal the sick , cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils: freely ye have received, freely give." (Matthew 10:8)

We serve a miracle-working God. Of course, it would have been awesome to have been able to stand there and watch Jesus work with our own eyes. But He is still in the healing business. He still wants to do today everything He did back then, and more. And He wants to do it through you and I. Our world today needs to know what it was like to watch the blind see and the dumb talk. They need someone to speak "Peace" to their life's storm.

Yeah, I wish I could have been there. But even more, I wish we were still seeing it today.

Blessings,

Bob Whitehead
