Hayes Family - Come Eat Bread

Producer: Jeff Collins/Mylon Hayes
Label: Crossroads Music
Website: http://www.hayesfamilyministries.com

Family groups have always held a place of prominence within the Southern Gospel industry. Many great family groups have made their mark in history such as the Happy Goodman Family, Speer Family, Hinsons, Hemphills, Hoppers, Crabb Family and so many others. Though I wouldn't consider the Hayes Family to be a huge household name when compared to the successes of the aforementioned groups, don't let that diminish the very capable talents of this multi-talented family. Consisting of dad and mom, Howard and Lucy Hayes and their children Mylon, Sharon and Janet, since the mid 1980's, this humble family has very quietly earned themselves a solid reputation as one of the best at what they do.singing!

The CD starts out with horns blazing on the upbeat, "ISN'T IT GREAT TO KNOW THE LORD" and leads quite well into the convention style "WE ARE ALMOST HOME", penned by Rodney Griffin.

The triumph of the recording is the Rebecca Peck/Chris Binion penned, "HE BROKE THE BREAD". Featuring a phenomenal performance by Sharon, this deep and meaty song about forgiveness and servant-hood almost features a "Hoppers big ballad" type arrangement and showcases the group with a slight Inspirational sound and is hands-down, the best song on the recording. The song leads ever so perfectly into the country feel of the title song, "COME EAT BREAD", which features Mylon.

Always a sucker for convention style songs, I found a lot to like about the Hank Williams' classic, "JESUS REMEMBERED ME", which features Janet. Recorded years ago by the Rex Nelon Singers in the 1970s, it was great hearing this song revived and sung quite skillfully by the Hayes Family. "REVIVAL DAYS" keep things in convention/campmeeting mode, as does "O BEAUTIFUL HOME"; so needless to say, there's a lot to like here if you enjoy that style of singing.

The first single from the recording is the choral sounding, "HE IS, FOREVER AND EVER AMEN", and musically contrasts the following prayer in song aptly titled, "MY PLEA", which features a more simple arrangement, but really shows off the great harmony this family is known for, not to mention the very intimate moment of worship the song allows the listener to experience.

"I ALREADY KNEW" is another excellent Rebecca Peck penned tune that features the silky smooth vocals of Sharon and offers us the assurance that whatever problem we are going through, it's no surprise to God."I already knew, what you'd be going through, and I've been here before you all the time, I'm no stranger to the pain, for I bore the shame and suffering for you, your trial didn't take me by surprise, I already knew."
Previously recorded by the Cathedrals and written Joel & LaBreeska Hemphill, "I'D LIKE TO SAY IT AGAIN", closes out the recording and features a nicely done duet by Howard and Lucy on the second verse (which sounded extremely reminiscent to Henry & Hazel Slaughter).

This was an extremely well done recording and one I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to. When doing reviews, one finds that only a few recordings will last long past the review process, as you can get burned out listening to them. But this was a refreshing change and one that definitely will find its way back to my CD player over and over again.
