The Gospel Truth
Selling The Dream
Every business opportunity sells one thing – the dream – the rewards and fruits of the effort.
We’ve all likely received the same kinds of emails, about how Johnny or Matilda earned $10,000 in one month, the idea being that if they could do it…you can also.
However, what they don’t tell you are the skills you need to perform at that high level.
Many folks will buy into the dream of earning $10,000 a month, just like Johnny and Matilda, but after months of hard work, almost no one will get there. In fact, more than 90% will fail. They don’t fail because they haven’t tried. They fail because they focused on the dream instead of learning the skills they will need to get the dream.
I recently read the following; “To get results, one need not fixate on them. Instead, fixate totally on doing and mastering the thing as best you can. Let the results take care of themselves.”
Hmmmm…where have we heard that before? Maybe Uncle Nick has been on to something all along?
Ask any amateur Southern Gospel group the following question: What is your dream?
Odds are you’ll hear something like,
We want to win souls for Jesus.
We want to be on the charts…anywhere on the charts.
We want to sing on the main stage at the National Quartet Convention.
We want to ride in a fancy bus.
We want to make a living singing Southern gospel Music.
These are all noble dreams and worthy of pursuit. But the reality is that most of you are failing in your pursuit of these dreams because you are focusing only on the dream instead of learning and mastering the skills that will get you your dream.
SUCCESS USUALLY COMES TO THOSE WHO ARE TOO BUSY TO BE LOOKING FOR IT. Henry David Thoreau
I love this quote because it exactly describes the secret of success… “Busyness.”
I preach this constantly to every artist. Work on your craft! Work on your craft! Work on your craft!
The reason it is so difficult for many artists to grasp this concept is because of all those in SGM who are very good at selling the dream… “You need a song on the radio…You need this advertisement…You need this giant backdrop for your product table…You need to be at NQC… You need a bus…You need to be in a showcase…blah, blah, blah, blah!”
What do I say? It’s all gobbledygook! What you NEED is to be able to SING!
How will you ever realize your dream if you don’t have the skills to perform and reach people?
How can you stay in business if you don’t understand sound business practices?
How can you make good recordings if you haven’t learned how to select the songs that will make your ministry effective?
How can you stay on the road if you are unable to book your group? (I’m excited to report that, in response to last month’s article, there are several hundred of you who emailed me for my booking system who now know how to do this.)
Folks, learning these skills will propel your career forward. All this “fake it ‘til you make it” stuff is absolute nonsense. Forget about what others are doing. Concentrate on getting really good at what you are doing. Develop an exceptionally good skill set. All the other “stuff” will come to you as you continue to get better and better.
The leaders in SGM do a great job of selling the dream, because they make money at it. But they fail miserably in teaching you young artists how to get there because they know that if you learn how to do it the right way they will lose their market.
I work with lots of groups. Many of them are “newbies.” The biggest challenge for many of these artists is getting past the hype of the SGM industry and getting down to work. It is truly amazing (and rewarding) to see their joy when things start coming together for them.
I leave you with these questions.
Are you singing just for the rewards or are you serious about reaching people?
If you continue to do the things you are doing will you be able to realize your dream?
Have the current methods, (radio promotion, ads, and the other SGM hype) worked well for you?
Do you stand around scratching your head wondering what to try next?
If you are serious about getting down to business I will help you.
