Down East Boys – One Day

I’ve been following the Down East Boys since the days they really were from “Down East” North Carolina (Pink Hill, to be exact). The first time I heard them was October 1984 in Swansboro, North Carolina. Even then, there was something special about them. As I’ve watched them grow into the group they have become, their sound has changed and evolved over time, but one thing has always been constant, class. Whether it’s a power ballad, straight-up quartet song or a high energy tune, they always sound great and they have never wavered from offering first class gospel. This latest release from the Down East Boys is no exception.

The recoding starts out with 2 perfect songs to open up with (and would are great concert openers as well), “Smile on Your Face” and “Good Time in the Lord” (yes that is the same song Phil Cross & Poet Voices did a few years ago). These two songs set the stage for the rest of the recording and they lead into my personal favorite from the recording, “I Know Your God”, penned by a wonderful young writer, Matt Rankin. I will be extremely surprised if this song doesn’t do well for the group. Matt also penned the exciting “Joseph Got His Tomb Back”, which is totally ‘in the groove’ Down East Boys music.

Newest member, Daryl Paschal does a tremendous job singing “Middle of a Miracle”, as well as the Joseph Habedank penned tune, “Washed”.

The Boys resurrect another Poet Voices song, “Grand and Glorious Savior” and they do an excellent job reviving this convention style song. In keeping with that convention fervor, they also revive the Goodman classic, “Living in Canaan Now”. Though an energetic performance, I felt the ending seemed to drag out a bit for a studio recording.

The Down East Boys always seem to churn out first class recordings. While I wouldn’t call this their greatest effort to date, it does showcase why they are one of the classiest male quartets on the road today.
