Dave Foraker - Thank the Lord

Producer:  Jimm Mosher/Alan Grossman
Label:  Independent Release
Website: www.bluesfiddler.com

It is only very recently that I came across the music of Dave Foraker.  He definitely has a story to tell, so check out his website.  Foraker's style is a fusion of gospel and blues.  One website I found refers to it as "Bluesified Southern Gospel."  It fits!  It's quite a unique combination and makes for one of the most unusual gospel recordings I've come across in a long time, but I must say it really comes together quite well.

Penned by Pop singer Seal, "GET IT TOGETHER" seems to fit right in with what Foraker is trying to say in his music and starts the recording off with it's disco feel before things move on to the upbeat, "FOCUS ON THE CROSS".  With its distinct blues feel, this is exactly where Foraker's niche is.  Other songs that fall into this feel are "JESUS (MY KINDA PEOPLE)", "I WANT TO BE AN ANGEL", "MISSING THE MARK", "SERVING YOU" and the final tune, "JESUS HAS RISEN".

The title song, "I THANK THE LORD", has a distinct black gospel feel to it and it too, fits Foraker like a glove as does "FROM THE TOMB HE AROSE", which falls into a similar vein.

 Rendering his own distinctive rendition of the classic hymn, "NOTHING BUT THE BLOOD", Foraker creates a unique moment before moving on to the driving beat of "YOU ARE WORTHY".

If you're into listening to something totally off the wall as far Southern Gospel goes, then I recommend you check into the music of Dave Foraker.  With its blues/black gospel influence, it's something totally different than the average Southern Gospel.  Foraker's raspy, edgy voice fits perfectly with this style.  The music tracks are pretty cool and overall quality of the recording is very good.  I can't say that the cover art is eye catching, because it doesn't scream, "LISTEN TO ME!" but if you take the chance to listen to it, I think you'll find a real gem enclosed.

Personal Favs:  JESUS (MY KINDA PEOPLE); I THANK THE LORD; NOTHING BUT THE BLOOD; MISSING THE MARK;

    Having seen Mr. Foraker several times in a concert setting, and having purchased copies of all of his CD's, I wholeheartedly agree with the review. Dave may not be traditional in his approach to Southern Gospel music, but his heart's desire is definitely to point the way to the cross. Keep Your Focus On The Cross is a tune that will stay in your mind after hearing it only once. Thank The Lord stays in my cd changer.

    What a breath of fresh air Dave Foraker is. I have grown up listening and loving Southern Gospel music, but Dave Foraker's soulful voice brings a new edge to the music. He definitely isn't traditional SG, but it's easy to see where his heart is. I checked out his site and ordered all three cd's. The two earlier cd's are a little more straight ahead blues, but definitely worth the time. Dave's version of Jesus Loves Me is a classic and Preacherman Told Me is a song that will be playing in your head long after you listen to it.
