Daryl Williams Trio - Marching

Producer: Danny Crawford/Jeff Collins
Label: Sonlite Records

I'll start this review by saying that since I received this CD, I haven't been able to stop listening to it. The Pentecostal/Campmeeting style of the whole recording just draws me in to keep listening over and over again. If you enjoy good upbeat, energetic music, exciting and sincere vocals, and strong, vibrant lyrics, then you need to get your hands on this recording. This is far and above, better than anything the Daryl Williams Trio has ever recorded.

"WHEN THE SAINTS" start things off with lots of energy and is a highlight of the recording as Daryl manages to breathe new life into this age old tune, which sounds amazingly like something Nancy Harmon would have written and sung. Keeping things in up-tempo power mode, Karen sings the oft recorded, "I'VE COME HERE TO TELL YOU", which has previously been recorded by Kirk Talley and the Crist Family. Shannon Knight (who is one of the most underrated singers in our industry) sings another oft-recorded tune entitled, "BETWEEN TWO THEIVES" and he does a great job interpreting the lyrics to the song.

Probably my favorite from the recording is the up-tempo, fiddle infested tune, "HOMESICK ANGEL". I love the thought process behind the song.knowing we have angels encamping around us, do the very same angels stay with us from birth to death? If so, do they get homesick for Heaven? If so, then when we leave this earth in death, we're flying Home "on the wings of a homesick angel." Very cool song and sounds very much like something Dottie Rambo would have written and the Rambo's would have sung back in the 1970s.

An excellent song of worship is the song, "THAT'S WHY WE CRY HOLY", which paves the way for the highly energetic "READY FOR WINGS." Things slow down again as Karen does an exceptionally nice job singing, "WHEN GOD HAS ANOTHER PLAN" before picking the pace right back up for the quartet sounding, "I DON'T SAIL ALONE", which features Shannon.

Daryl turns in his rendition of his own tune recorded by the Perrys, "WHY TROUBLE THE MASTER" (though not quite as slick as the Perrys, but a good cut nonetheless) while the upbeat, "HIS HAND ON ME" rounds out the recording.

A good Pentecostal campmeeting.that's what you feel like you've been to after listening to this recording. Now those who have preconceived ideas about Pentecostal music can put those ideas aside, because this is quality music and quality singing. If I had to pinpoint one issue, it would be there is a lot of stacks on the recording.but I also think the reason behind it is to give it somewhat of a choir feel. At any rate, this is the type of recording you'll want to listen to when you're down and out and need a pick me up. Roll the windows down and turn it way up and have yourself a good time!

This is a great album. I don't have my copy yet, but I've heard it in the process of being made. My faves are When God has Another Plan, Saints, and That's Why We Cry Holy - Wow! You will be drawn into worship even if you don't know how...
