At long last, for all the Kenny Hinson fans who have wanted to know more about their hero, here's a book written by Larry Hinson, as only a brother who had traveled and lived on the road with Kenny could write it.
In this new book you will find interesting historical facts about Kenny and the original Hinsons. Some facts covered will include the Hinsons as they were involved in Ministry from 1967 through 1988. How they moved from Salinas , CA in 1971 to Nashville, TN to enlarge their careers. The Hinsons joined the Singing Jubilee in 1973 as permanent members. You will learn that the Hinsons were very big in Country Gospel, winning a Fan Award for that category.
An interesting fact is that the Hinsons never sang as a group in their father's church. They all sang specials by themselves. It was not until they were invited to sing at a revival that they decided to try to sing as a group, and the rest of their success is history. The first song they sang as guests on the Singing Jubilee was "The Lighthouse". These are just a few of the historical facts and gems that you will unearth in this book.
Larry Hinson has been asked so many times to write about what it was like to live "behind the scenes" in the life of Kenny Hinson. At the time of Kenny's passing, July 27, 1995, Larry had a yearning to share all that he had been asked to do, so in 1996 he began this book.
Larry describes how Kenny never lost faith in a prophecy that was given over the Hinsons in 1967. He also accounts many of the trials, heartaches, and betrayals that affected the life of Kenny.
Larry also includes some of the interesting facts of when Kenny first went into the solo and preaching ministry after the Hinsons had retired as a group. He talks of Kenny's first revival where eight people showed up.
This book comes complete with 31 never before published pictures of Kenny and the Hinsons. Larry is honest and forthright concerning some of the personal problems that Kenny encounter upon Larry's leaving the group. You will learn a little of what it was like for Kenny to pastor at the Lighthouse Assembly of God church in Houston, TX .
All in all this is a book that any Hinson fan will have to get. If you've wanted to know what is like to live with a legend, then you will want this book. If you are just a southern gospel history buff, you will want this book.

So glad to see that the book has finally been completed. This is a wonderful chance for people to get an inside look at the man who influenced so many of the people who today carry on the wonderful message of Christ in song. It is also the first of many books I expect to see from a wonderful man, a friend, and a great Man of God, Larry Hinson. Tamra and I wish you the best! Thanks for all you have imparted into our lives through your ministry.
I hope to purchase this book. What a good title.
This will be a "must have" book for SG fans! I can't wait to read it. Thanks Larry,.. for sharing your memories.. and your family.
Chuck
Well I sure don't have to tell anyone how stinkin' excited I am about this book!!!!! :hehe: I agree with Chuck, this will definently be a "must have." I can't wait!!!!
I can't wait to read this!!! Kenny was the Man!!
GREAT NEWS HE WAS  NEVER BE ANY BODY THAT COULD SING LIKE HIM THANK GOD.HE NEEDS TO BE IN THE HALL OF FAME BILL.
One discrepency I already found (and I haven't even read it) was the Hinsons did spend a few years living in Madisonville, KY as mentoree's of the Goodmans. It was after that they moved to Nashville.
This book will be a MUST HAVE for any Hinson fan. Their music changed my direction in life and "turned me on" to gospel music. Thanks Larry, for sharing your memories.
James, don't get too knit picky here. I wrote this article from an interview and I may have gotten an item or two wrong.
Don't make me start looking at your writing too closely... LOL You know what they say about paybacks... LOL

I am a nitpicker when it comes to historical stuff. I get so aggravated when groups don't even know their own history. Take for instance the Goodmans...on Vestal's site it says she released her first solo LP in 1975...nope...it was 1971.
I find erranous information all the time. It's a quirk of mine...just ask Larry Ferguson! LOL!
Like I said, that was probably MY mistake.

Gentlemen! My wife once asked me, if as a preacher I had read the entire Bible through from cover to cover. I replied that I had not methodically done so. She responded by asking how I could do a book report on a book I truly hadn't read for myself. It changed my concept of reading and studying altogether. I would suggest that Mr. Hales, realize it would be best if he buys the book and reads it before giving a book report. In this he will discover that the I do mention living in Madisonville, Ky before Nashville and he is incorrect about mentorship.
The Goodmans were excellent ministers and singers, I know them all well and they are friends of mine however, they were busy fullfilling their own obligations at the time in which the book refers to.
It would appear Mr. Hales that this time the erranous information is yours!
I apologize if you were offended. I was only going on info I have personally heard Ronnie Hinson tell. Maybe he needs to write his own side.
I look forward to getting my own copy and reading the book as I have long been a big Hinson fan.
WHO IS ON THE BOARD FOR THE HALL OF FAME KENNY HINSON SHOULD BE IN THE SG HALL OF FAME
Dear Mr. Hales:
No offense taken, however may you also keep in mind that correction is not rejection, only redirection!
I am certainly not saying that I am above error. There will no doubt be errors in the editors copy of the book with regard to mispelled or misplaced words. You may very well discover this when you read the book. I am informed by my publisher that this is common and yet I will correct these mistakes when found. I have also placed a comment in the Preface with regard to my siblings memory in comparison to mine, concerning particular times and events. It is common knowledge that know two people would have the same identical memory of any given event, particularly after several years had transpired. Ronny fully knows many of the events with regard to Madisonville, Ky and the Goodmans, however, Ronny will be the very first to tell you that the only engagements and training we received while in Madisonville, Ky, was for the most part at the school of hard knocks! As a personal mentor to several students each week at the Bible Colllege where I am Vice President, I am fully aware as to the term mentor. I will say however, that the Goodmans are wonderful people and I mourn the passing of our dear Sister Vestal who personally prayed for Kenny at his cancer fund raiser & for Howard who sang at Kenny's funeral. Yet, time would not truly permit them to train us or open but a few doors for us in those days, I suppose that God himself receives most of the credit for that!
I encourage you to remember at all times that this book is designed to show you who Kenny truly was and what he was like as a person as well as a minister. It is not focused on the presise accuracy of every persons name or every event's exact time frame.
I truly hope you enjoy the book, I spent much time weeping over it's contents and sometimes I even found myself smiling uncontrolably...
Be blessed!
We're cool.
Man. . . .I don't know if I can read this book! Just this small part made me cry!
-----------------------
I mourn the passing of our dear Sister Vestal who personally prayed for Kenny at his cancer fund raiser & for Howard who sang at Kenny's funeral.

And I never met any of the three, Kenny, Vestal, or Howard. But I do know that I lost my Mom 1 year after Kenny, and it still hurts just as much today as it did that day. But I'm so thankful that we will get to see them again someday!! Or in my case, I'll get to meet these three for the very first time and tell them the impact they have had on my life!
Can't wait to read the book. We loved the Hinsons...we were/are in their same age group and they had great impact pumping young energy into gospel music. I remember being at the Chattanooga concert the night before Kenny and Debbie's wedding---they all seemed to be having such great fun...The disbanding of the Hinson's and Kenny's death was a great loss. Where is Kenny's widow and his children--seems she would be writing the book.
I too, remember being at the concert in Chattanooga Tennessee - the night before Kenny and Debbie were to be married. I am so excited about this book! I am expecting my autographed copy just any day because - "I was the winner" of the "Kenny Hinson Photo Contest" - I thank Larry so much for sharing his life with Kenny! I just can't wait to get it!!!
I got it!!!!!!!!!I have just finished reading "Life With A Legend" - It was delivered in today's mail and I immediatley started reading it and I didn't move till I had read it completely through. I
have cried, laughed and also reveled in the wonderful memories I have of being at many of those concerts of the Hinsons throughout their career. (Including the
"The Singing at Sea" which Larry talks about in the book)
The excitement of
attending a Hinson concert can only be understood by those fans who were able to experience it! -
I rejoice - knowing that I will again someday hear Kenny sing! Larry - you have done a wonderful job!
Thank you so much!!!!!!
As a longtime fan of the Hinson's and I am also fruit of Larry Hinson's ministry as 20 Yrs ago last month I was saved at a larry Hinson revival!! Now I am Pastoring and working with Dr. Hinson at the Bible College.
I can't wait to get my copy and read about the family that has ministered to me for so long!!!
Blessings on you Larry and Jana (You ARE good People!)
Brother Larry...
Awesome book, brother! As soon as I got it, I could not put it down. Read it cover to cover. I laughed and I cried. I also bought a copy for the second biggest Kenny fan I know, my friend Michael. He loves it, too. God bless you Larry as you keep the Hinson legacy alive for a new generation!
I have always loved the Hinsons..My family lives in Greenville, Ms. and we went to the concerts when they came to Jackson, Ms. at the city auditorium..They came so often we felt like they were our family..About 5 carloads would go and when we left the auditorium, we felt like we had been to church..Back then we did not have cell phones but we had cb radios..It was about 120 miles from Greenville and all the way home we talked on those radios about what a blessing we all had received and could not wait until the next one....One night we were walking behind Bro. Larry Hinson and another young guy..It blessed us so much because he was witnessing to him about the Holy- Ghost..We just about had church right then and there!!! It truly was like being in church..We also know Bro. and Sis. Gardner from Columbus, Ms..I know Kenny sang at Sis. Gardner's funeral..A friend of our,Louise Hall still goes to their church..I also know Kenny and Marita were very close! I cannot tell you how jealous all of us girls were!! Anyway, I am so glad this book has been written!
It is with great anticipation that I await the arrival of “Life With A Legend.” Dr. Hinson, I have seen you struggle on many occasions as you relived the events of this book. I know this was a true “labor of love” and know that many will be blessed by it. I join you in your prays that this will touch the lives of millions…Congratulations on the completion of a mile marker in your life, my friend. Love to you and Jana…
Your friend and co-laborer.
Ron Moore
Larry the book is simply great!! I too cried in many places, and laughed in many, also. It could not have been easy, brother to relive the hard times, especially the times of Kennys Illness, but you did it with great pride. I applaud you.
ps. Larry is my real brother
Have been a Hinson fan since they first started their concert tours. The Lighthouse is my all time favorite song. Can't wait to get the book.
I believe there is a certain thing some singers and men/women of God have that sets them apart from all the rest---something called "the annointing" from God. The Hinsons had and still have that, and have not lost it or grown weary. A person can still feel it just from memories of those one and only Hinson concerts! That these folks would allow themselves to be so used by God that millions of people would be affected is just a sign that they have laid up treasures in Heaven. I thank God for you! My life has been richer by far because of your gospel influence!
I feel a great sadness still over the loss of Kenny, but whenever I do it seems I can hear his voice singing..."Save all your sad mail, and all your sad farewells,...Cause I'm heading for the Land of the Free...Brother, you ain't seen the last of me!"
Keep up the good fight, Larry & Jana Hinson and all the rest of you Hinson gang! May God reward you over and over! Thank you for heeding the call of God and so richly blessing my life!
For James Hales: I realize that this is one and one-half years late, but Mr. Hales, you need to read a book before you critique it. Also, please don't criticize Larry until you learn to spell accurately. You spelled the word "erroneous" like this, "erranous". That is incorrect. Shame!!!!
Larry did an outstanding job on a book that, I am sure, tore at his heart strings every time he wrote a sentence. He and Kenny were so close. So, please don't criticize him.
Nobody could sing The Lighthouse like Kenny. It saddens me that he died at such a young age. We should treat each other as though everyday is going to be our last day on earth. God is in charge of our lives. Not ourselves.
James, it is now October 1st 2007. A little late for your article that Larry Hinson wroteconcerning his family. I judy got a computer a short time ago and came across your article. The Hinson family is still one of my favorites, I miss Kenny and his rendition of The Lighthouse" is still my favorite song.
KENNY HINSON HAS GOT TO BE ONE OG THE GREATEST GOSPEL SINGERS OF ALL TIME,I FIRST HEARD HIM SING WHEN I WAS ABOUT 8 YEARS OLD,I AM NOW 41. MY GRANDMOTHER LISTEN TO THE HINSONS ALL THE TIME WHEN I WAS A CHILD. I GREW UP LISTENING TO HIM AND HIS FAMILY SING.I REMEMBER BEING AT SCHOOL AND OTHER KIDS TALKING ABOUT DIFFERENT SINGING GROUPS LIKE THE JACKSONS,MICHAEL JACKSON,CYNDI LAUPER OR MADONNA,I WOULD BE TALKING ABOUT THE HINSONS OR KENNY HINSON SINGING,THEY WOULD LOOK AT ME LIKE I WAS CRAZY.THAT BEING SAID KENNY HINSON AND HIS FAMILY WERE THE BEST AND STILL THE BEST.THEY SHOULD HAVE A STAR IN HOLLYWOOD.KENNY WAS TRULY A LEGEND AND STILL IS IN SOUTHERN GOSPEL MUSIC,HE JUST HAD TO LEAVE TOO SOON BUT WHAT A MARK HE MADE IN PEOPLE`S LIVES.
