Talley Trio and Gold City the Night’s Big Winners
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The 2007 SGN Awards were handed out last night at a special concert celebration in Smyrna, Tennessee to a standing room only crowd. The Talley Trio was this year’s big winner – winning five awards. The group won Song of the Year (for “Mountain Mover”), Album of the Year (for Rise Above), Mixed Group of the Year, and Progressive Southern Album of the Year (for Rise Above). Group member Roger Talley was awarded Producer of the Year (Artist) for his production work in 2006. Talley was also awarded two additional Ovations for his production work on the Album of the Year and Progressive Southern Album of the Year Rise Above – making him the most awarded individual of the night.
The most nominated artist of the night, Gold City, won three awards. The group won the biggest award of the night, 2007 Pacesetter, as well as Traditional Southern Song of the Year (for “Truth Is Marching On”) and Traditional Southern Album of the Year (for Revival).
Several artists and individuals were awarded two Ovations last night, including Mike Bowling who won his second Male Vocalist of the Year (he previously won the award in 2005) and Country/Bluegrass Album of the Year for producing the Mike Bowling Group’s Graceland. The songwriting team of Jim Brady, Barry Weeks, and Tony Wood also won two awards for writing the Song of the Year (“Mountain Mover”) and Traditional Southern Song of the Year (“Truth Is Marching On”). TaRanda Greene was awarded Female Vocalist of the Year as well as Progressive Southern Song of the Year for her breakout hit “Sky Full of Angels.” Last year’s big winners, the Booth Brothers, took home two awards as well – Best Live Performer and Male Group of the Year.
The event was hosted by singer/songwriter/comedienne Sondra Burnett and Chris D. Unthank, Chart & Awards Coordinator for SoGospelNews.com and co-owner of SSE Group. The evening featured resounding performances from Gold City, Booth Brothers, Talley Trio, Dove Brothers Quartet, Mike & Kelly Bowling, Three Bridges, The Dunaways, Kim Collingsworth, The Dills, TK & McRae, Beloved, The Imperials, and host Sondra Burnett.
“God has absolutely blessed this event,” mentioned Deon Unthank, administrator of SoGospelNews.com. “We are continually amazed at just how much this event has grown over the last couple years. We are so thankful to all the groups and nominees who came out to support the awards. We are already looking forward to next year’s program!”
The SGN Music Awards are an annual award handed out each year by the staff at SoGospelNews.com. Each January, the staff decides upon the nominees in over twenty categories. In February of that year, the readers of the site are then allowed to vote for their favorites. This is the sixth year the awards have been in existence.
The official sponsors for the 2007 SGN Music Awards Celebration were Tennessee’s Mortgage Gals – Bev McCann & Kim Hampton.

What a group of talented individuals. When you look at the music that is represented here, it's hard to figure out why Southern Gospel music isn't huge.
It was great to see Taranda Greene get the nod as well as Rhonda Thompson.
One category that is missing is "SG Ambassadors", that person, or group of people, that help to promote SG music to the public. My choise for winners, the Unthanks.
Thanks to SGN for all that you do in promoting God's music. You're the best!
Congratulations to Kirk Talley for winning the FAN FAVORITE AWARD!!! A WELL DESERVED award!
Congrats to Kirk Talley for being named the Fan Favorite! Also, congrats to Gold City & Booth Bros. for their awards. Congrats to all of the other winners, too.
God is good all the time & all the time God is good.

Way to go Kirk Talley, you are my favorite!! Also, congratulations to my friend Daryl Williams on "songwriter of the year." It's about time!
Nick Bruno is just a nice guy with great abilities. I was so happy to be there last night and see a nice guy finish first. Whether it's the Booth Brothers or any other group, Nick's production is always first class and his love for Southern Gospel Music seems to be genuine and honest.
I hope to see his name on more and more awards ballots. And more importantly on more and more SGM liner credits.
Justin Ellis, way to go! The Crabb Family Band is awesome and Justin really deserves this award.
It was a great night for southern gospel indeed, with great performances including a thunderous debut for TK & Mcrae, but there were some obvious question marks. How does Rodney Griffin(how many years in a row has he won the most prestigious songwriter of the year award--SINGING NEWS) not get nominated for songwriter of the year or artist based songwriter??? Can someone explain how he does NOT qualify. That was more than puzzling to me.The performances were great and the speeches were humble, heartfelt and sweet(especially kirk talley),but I couldnt help but feel like I was watching an awards show that was really just the opinion of only 12 writers, and who "THEIR" favorites were and who they wanted to prop up.It certainly did not reflect the voices of fans, and I fear that was a bit obvious. Also some of the comments made by the co-host regarding american idol--being called american idiot.Very inappropriate word to use from a church stage, and a very general statement about a show many people enjoy.Did she forget that some christians have been able to use that platform to witness?? Are they idiots??Carrie underwood's song "jesus take the wheel" is the closest thing gospel music has ever gotten to the mainstream, and if it werent for american idol,it would have never happened, and I suspect, some people may have not been led to the lord through that song....and that would have been tragic.A very sour note on a great night as a whole.
Rodney Griffin did qualify, but did not receive enough votes for a nomination. He has been nominated in the past. All nominations are voted on by the SGN Staff based upon the previous year's accomplishments, not accomplishments as a whole. The winners are then voted on by the fans.
Congratulations Kirk. Your the Best. Also congratulations to the Talley Trio. Everyone there is a winner in God's eyes.
