Lynn Haven, Florida is home for a fine singer, Tammy Kirkland. Her latest recording, Happy in Jesus, showcases her vocal abilities. Her evangelistic style is reminiscent of other great female vocalists like Janet Paschal and Karen Wheaton.

“Thank You Lord” starts the album off and is a mid-tempo song done in a laid back pop style. This is a great opening song that sets the mood for the rest of the project. The title cut, “Happy in Jesus” is one of those contagious songs that you find yourself caught up in. This song has a touch of Jazz with a good beat. The first ballad on the project is “In Heaven”. This is a beautiful song, written by Keanna Turner West. Tammy sings it well.

“Isn’t That Just like Jesus” picks the tempo back up. This song reminds me of something that the Nelons would have done during the Karen Peck era. “He’s God” is a worship song from the pen of Edwin Hawkins. Tammy is joined on this cut by the choir from her home church, Hiland Park Baptist. This is a highlight of the project. “Think on These Things” is another song with a Pop feel to it.

I was glad to see that Tammy has included the great song written by former Louisiana governor, Jimmie Davis and the late Jack Campbell, “I Know a Man Who Can”. This song has more of a Country feel to it and is a nice change of pace. “When I Am Weak” is a pretty ballad. Tammy’s voice is perfect for this type of song. The arrangement shows off the softer side of her vocals and builds through the last chorus.

Tammy Kirkland specializes in the bluesy evangelistic style songs. John Darin Rowsey’s “Don’t Give up on Victory” is just this type of song and Tammy delivers a great vocal performance. One of the greatest Christian songwriters, past or present, is Fanny J. Crosby. Her music is a pillar of Church music, crossing denominations. “Tell Me the Story of Jesus” is just one of her many great compositions. Tammy does a great job with this wonderful old song.

John Darin Rowsey has written another great song with a driving beat, “Holy Ghost Overdose”. This song has a little bit of a Southern Rock feel to it with a heavy down beat. Once again, Tammy excels on this song. Her closing song, “To Be” is a beautiful worship song that once again showcases the lighter sound of Tammy’s voice.

Tammy Kirkland has a pure voice with great power. She has the ability to take her place among the great female soloists in Gospel Music. This project has a good variety of material and some wonderful vocals.
