Gold City - Moment of Truth
Producer: Michael Sykes and Daniel Riley
Label: New Haven Records

Gold City hasn't had the easiest time the last few years. The group saw a pretty hefty personnel change over the last few years, and this year didn't help with the exit of 11-year veteran with the group Jonathan Wilburn.
Moment of Truth - Gold City's brand new project - is the first introduction that many will have with the City's brand new lead singer Bruce Taliaferro. Fans ought not be disappointed - because even though Wilburn left big shoes to fill - Taliaferro fills them quite nicely. His tone is similar to Daniel Riley, so the blend there is fantastic, and Bruce seamlessly picks up where Jonathan left off.
Musically, Gold City's
Revival featured a bit more of a country feel, but
Moment of Truth finds the group balancing nicely between the country and traditional quartet sound. The album kicks off with the extremely catchy "Don't Get Me Started" (with full horn section accompanying) and moves right into the touching ballad "What Children Believe" that recalls the likes of the Oak Ridge Boys or Gaither Vocal Band. The Joel and LaBreeka Hemphill penned "I Cast My Bread Upon the Water" is traditional quartet music with a straight up country accompaniment. This is a sound the Gold City has just nailed over the last couple of years.
More traditional sounds abound - especially on the Aaron McCune led songs "Walkin' and Talkin' With My Lord" and "Turn Your Back." "I Love This Land" is your typical orchestrated patriotic number, sure to be a hit at concerts across the country. "When Jesus Saves" pushes the envelope a bit musically, adopting slight bluesed-up Southern sound with Steve Ladd turning out one of his finest vocals to date.
The album highlight also comes from Steve Ladd - who continues to prove year after year that he's one of the best tenor's in the industry - most notably on "For the Sake of My Heart". By the end of the song when Bruce picks up the lead - you feel like you're hearing quartet music history in the making.
Overall, Gold City has turned out another fantastic recording, proving that despite recent personnel turnover, the group is still at the top of their game. Gold City isn't quite as tight as they could be during a couple moments on the disc, but that is expected for a release this soon after replacing your long-time lead singer - and with those few moments this is still one of the finest quartet releases this year. Couple that with the fact that there are only 10 songs featured makes me feel a bit shorted, but it's only a minor complaint for an overall great release.
