If you've been wondering what the Dove Brothers have been up to with their last two recordings, you'll hear it when you listen to Life. This could quite possibly the best DBQ recording ever. What the DBQ began with their Anything but Ordinary recording has now come into fruition with Life. While it shows some changes in their style musically, I don't think there is anything on here that their die-hard Traditional fans wouldn't enjoy. It a cross between the Oak Ridge Boys and the Dove Brothers former self; and it's a phenomenal sound.
The nice tempo of the opening tune, "AFTER THE STORM" reassures us that "after the storm, there's a beautiful silence...it's calmer than before, what a wonderful peace, after the storm" and the song really does a nice job setting the pace for the recording before things get kicked into high gear with a driving bass feature by David Hester on "GIVE IT TO THE LORD". Jerry Martin then slows things down for his only feature on the recording, a beautiful song of consecration, "I WANT TO LIVE MY LIFE FOR YOU".
Strong country sounds abound for the unique sounding, "YOU DON'T KNOW GOD'S LOVE". This song is one I could very easily see the likes of the Oak Ridge Boys singing, as well as the thought provoking, "A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AMERICA." (I'd love to see this song hit radio!)
"FACE TO FACE WITH GRACE" is something totally different for the DBQ and is one of the highlights of the recording. David Hester renders one of his greatest performances as he tenderly offers comfort for those who've lost loved ones. I dare say the song could become the sleeper of the recording and will no doubt be a fan favorite.
McCray Dove kicks things back into high gear with another highlight, "I STILL GOT A FEELING", before he slows things down for country-blues feel of "YOU WOULD THINK HE WOULD LEARN" (which would make a great radio tune as well).
Eric Dove's only feature is the song "YOU CAN'T FIX IT" (ironically recorded by the Oak Ridge Boys a couple of years ago) before the recording closes out with the traditional quartet sounds of "SMOOTH SAILING."
This recording could be titled, "McCray Dove Out Front" as he takes the lead on a vast majority of the songs here; and I must say, McCray has never sounded better. There is no "I Can Pray" or any other type of power ballad included, but you get something that a lot of Southern Gospel recordings do not offer, and that is variety and out of the ordinary. The DBQ are always trying to think outside the box, and they really stepped out of the box with this recording to create one of the most fantastic releases for 2008. Mark it down...this is one recording we'll be talking about for years to come.
