When you want consistency and quality, you can look no further than the Whisnants. They've found a formula that works for them and they stick with it, and it's garnered them numerous #1 songs and great recordings. As an independent group, they've done very well for themselves, even better than many groups with a major label backing them. This recording "promises" to be one of their finest offerings.

In typical Whisnants fashion, the recording starts off with the east flow of "WHAT CAN I DO FOR YOU" before picking up the pace with "HE BLED, HE DIED, HE ROSE", which features Jeff Whisnant.

Next, Aaron Hise sings the Rodney Griffin penned story-like tune, "THE BEST THAT I COULD DO". Though the song is quite unassuming and will probably never make it to radio, it's become my favorite of the recording. Don't let this song slip by without really taking it all in.

No Whisnants recording would be complete without a couple ballads for Susan Whisnant to sink her teeth into, and we're not left empty handed as she performs "VOICE OF FALLING TEARS" and "HE NEVER EVEN LOOKED AT THE MAN". Both are extremely well done, and will no doubt become a favorite of many.

The first single from the recording is the toe-taper, "THE LIGHT OF THE LAMB". Though I wouldn't consider this a #1 song, it's definitely a radio friendly tune that should do very well for the Whisnants. Aaron is featured once again on the Ricky Atkinson/Jeff Steele penned, "BE NOT AFRAID."

Written by Rodney Griffin and recorded a few years ago by Greater Vision, the Whisnants turn in their rendition of the song entitled, "THERE IS" (I love the "Doghouse" bass on the song) and they do a fine job with it, as well as on another Griffin penned tune, "HE IS GUIDING ME" (co-written with Chris Binion).

The pace slows down as Jeff sings the Kyla Rowland penned song about faith, "THE PAST IS A PROMISE". I love the lyric as the main hook of the song says that we need to go back to the past and see how that God kept His promises and watched over His own, and He is still keeping His promises and watching over us."did He deliver Moses, did He comfort Elijah, was David a part of, this promise to be, did God's Son rise out of Judah, did He walk up Golgotha, the past holds the power of His promise to me.I just go back to the moment He saved me, I just go back to every prayer He's answered for me, then I don't have to worry about my next blessing, the past is a promise, I'll have all that I need". If there was ever sermon in song, this is it.

The recording closes with "I MUST TOUCH JESUS" and the classic "I'LL LIVE IN GLORY" (which is one of my all time favorite songs).

While this latest recording does indeed rank as one of their best works to date, I don't think it exceeded their previous recording, New Day Dawning, which I consider a 5 star recording. But nonetheless, this latest release is truly an exceptional piece of work, and one that the Whisnants can be proud of and their fans will definitely approve of.

Promises is another GREAT project from the Whisnants! These folks are some of the sweetest and most humble singers we have in SG music. They live what they sing.

Thank you, Whisnants, for a great album and doing a fantastic job on "He Never Even Looked at the Man", a Jeff Steele idea written by Jeff, Toni Jolene Clay and myself...beautiful job! Thank you so much!

The Whisnants never cease to amaze me. While this project is not necessarily their best, they still recorded it with the desire to be the same never-changing group they've always been. The Whisnants are the most underrated group in Southern Gospel today.
