I think I can get excited about this group and this CD. The title of the album fits everything about this group. With some of the closest harmony I have ever heard recorded, you can hear some traces of the influence of the old Statesmen Quartet.
Starting the CD with a number written by Baritone Keith Harris, this upbeat song sets the mood for the rest of the CD. This cut also shows the singing talents of Keith also. Get ready for your toes to be tapping as you listen to this song. I think that this song would be a good radio cut.
“What A Morning That Will Be” is a beautiful ballad which was authored by and features Lead singer Ben Harris. The interpretation and closed harmony in this song is very reminiscent of the old Weatherford sound. The message of the song is uplifting and encouraging.
Another song penned by Keith Harris is “When We Are Called Away”. This is a great quartet song, giving you a little Bass feature and yet letting the Lead singer shine also. I’m sort of torn, because I really like this cut for radio too. This has some very neat harmony structure in it.
They do a great job on several old Classics as well. “What A Precious Friend Is He”, “Great Day’, “Rolling Along”, and “I Bowed On My Knees” are all great old classics, but they have never been performed any better than these guys sing them. Once again I go back to that oh so close harmony that is so apparent that these guys work hard on. If Southern Sound has a trade make that they will be remembered for, it is that close harmony.
They do let the Bass, Charles Brantley, shine on that great Joe Roper song “What A Happy Day”. “One Soul Was Worth The Cross” features Tenor Sweeney, and not only does he do a terrific job expressing this song, but you once again hear that Weatherford sounding harmony. Showing their diversity, “You Better Run” is an old Spiritual and just a fun song to listen to.
I don’t hesitate to say that you will certainly get your money’s worth in the enjoyment of listening to this CD.
