Eason Trio - “Mercies Are New”
2002/Mission House Music Group
I remember back in the mid 1980’s, a group called the Eason’s were just beginning to make a name for themselves with songs like “His Name is Jesus” and “Hallelujah.” Just as quickly as they came on the scene, it seemed like they were gone. Now, some 15 years later, a new group of Eason’s has surfaced. This time the kids, Jason, Angie and Josh Eason, have hit the road, and I hope they stick around much longer than the original family group did!
“Mercies are New” is the first recording released and produced by Jonathan Martin and Mission House Music Group and you can definitely hear the Martin influence musically and vocally. Their sound is almost a cross between the Martins and the Crabb Family. Some extremely strong songs, lyrically, are found on this CD. If you want a completely encouraging, ministering and uplifting CD to listen to, this is the one to have. I am truly impressed with the song selection on this CD and what this group has to offer through their music.
The Albert E. Brumley classic, ”JESUS HOLD MY HAND” gets the CD off to a rousing start and really makes for a fun song to listen to, while ”IN MY TIME” offers promise and serenity that all things are working together for our good, in His time. The words of this song are so comforting and it is as if God Himself is speaking…"it may not be the lightning flashing, it may not be the thunder crashing, it may not be the stars falling from the sky, it may not be the fire burning, but wait and see and you will learn that it will be beautiful in My time.”
The old spiritual ”WAYMAKER” is probably the weakest song found on this recording. It just doesn’t do anything for me musically or vocally, but on the flipside, my favorite song is found in the beautiful, ”ENJOY THE JOURNEY.” An awesome message is found in this song. If you ever question God and your faith gets weak from the struggles of life, this song offers encouragement to “enjoy the journey, rest in God’s Love, give Him glory, be strong and stand up, for He has given a life worth living, so until eternity, enjoy the journey.”
The title song, ”MERCIES ARE NEW” is an excellent song taken right from the Bible. Though we may fail the Lord today, He is faithful to give us new mercies with each new day. Where would we be if it were not for the mercies of God?
The Southern Gospel funk sounding, ”HIS GRACE IS SUFFICIENT” is next, then things slow down for the reflective and somewhat folk sounding ”IN MY LOWEST TIME,” which is another great song of encouragement that even in the lowest times in life you can see…"It was His loving hand that wiped away your tears and He held you tightly, close to His side, and He saw you through your lowest time.”
“THIS IS WHERE GRACE COMES IN” is another great encouraging song reminding us that when it seems you’ve reached the end, that this is where His Grace comes in and “…the healing can begin.”
Paul says that we press toward the prize that is before us, and this song ”THE PRIZE BEFORE ME,” reminds us of this fact. We must press on and keep our eyes on Him, for a crown of life is awaiting us! The final song, ”KEEP ON PRAYING”, offers some excellent advice, that though the answers to our prayers may seem to be nowhere in sight, just “…keep on praying until you’ve heard the voice of the Lord.”
As I said, you can definitely hear the Martin influence throughout this recording. Their sound is progressive, but I find them easy to listen to. The only observation I have made is that they seem to overdo or overwork their vocals at times. But they are young, and they’ll improve with age. I have become a big fan of theirs just by listening to this one CD and I feel they have a very bright future in gospel music.
