Thanksgiving is upon us and we get a break! We have been quite busy this Fall. Certainly not complaining, be we are always happy to spend special time with our families. Don't think for a minute that we don't enjoy our CWG family as well! It is always good to go from place to place to see and sing to you folks.
Everyone is doing quite well. Penny has pretty much adjusted to bus life and we...to life with Penny! She is a delight to have in the group and I want to say thanks to all of you who have been so complimentary and supportive of her. She is certainly appointed and annoited by the Lord.
We have covered a lot of territory the past 6 weeks and are winding down our 2007 year. We plan to visit several churches in December, spend Christmas with the family, and get ready for 2008 by going to Shipshewana, IN for New Year's Eve. If we come to your area, please do drop in.
I want to remind everyone of April 12, 2008. It is our second annual CWG Reunion Concert. Again, we hope to have several former members with us and look forward to getting them on stage to sing. It was a lot of fun last year, and we have had many already buying their tickets. Right now, there is choice seating available, so if you want to attend, call Harold at 888- 319-1021 and reserve your seats.
I want to appeal to some of you who would like to take part in helping us support Convoy of Hope. We have a pledge to raise $10,000 for the children and families of America as well as those internationally who are less fortunate than we. Your gift will go to help with medical needs as well as food, shelter and clothing for hurting families down the road from each of us. Some have already joined us and we appreciate it very much. If you would like to contribute, call Harold at 888-319-1021. He can give you directions to send a check or he can take a credit card. You will receive a tax deductible receipt for your gift. I want to say thanks in advance to everyone who shares with us in this worthy cause. You may check the organization out at: http://convoyofhope.org.
Be sure and check out our discussion board at: http://www.chuckwagongangblog.com. If you have questions about the current or former CWG groups, our products, and future plans, Harold Timmons will be happy to care of you. You can call him at 888-319-1021. Thanks and God bless,
Dave
A Biblical Perspective
"...we must be about the Father's business."
I was driving through the foothills of the Smoky Mountains this afternoon, just outside of Pigeon Forge, and couldn't help but notice the colorful trees all around me. They had leaves that were a variety of colors, shapes and sizes that served to paint a beautiful picture. As I pondered the sight, I had a thought skitter across my mind about 'time'. It is the Fall of the year, and the 'time' for the leaves to give up their green, lush life and be transformed into one last bit of beauty before they fall helplessly to the ground. There they will turn brown and rot to serve as a sort of mulch to keep the tree from whence they fell well and protected. While they themselves won't return next Spring, we can be sure there will be new leaves to take their place on the tree limb, only to repeat the process that 'time' has already scheduled for them just as it did their predecessors.
The word 'time' sparked a whole bevy of thoughts while I drove on to my destination. We have all been given a certain alottment of time. For some it is much, for others, little. But, be sure there is a divine 'purpose' for each of us and it is our responsiblity to seek and find that 'purpose' for our alotted 'time' on earth. Time is constant, relentless, and unforgiving. It moves on whether we want it to or not. It doesn't speed up, but the more of it we use in life, it seems that it does. Maybe it is because, for us, we know there is a limit as to how much we get to have and to use. Life, couched in time, can easily be compared to the seasons of the year as many poets and songwriters have done. For each of us there was a beginning (Spring) and there certainly will be an end (Winter). What we do with the time alotted us (Summer and Fall) is the real issue. If we use it productively, we can look back with satisfaction. If we waste it, we don't get to go back and use that 'time' again. It is forever gone.
I remember as a boy listening to Dad and Mom Speer sing the song, "Time Has Made A Change". After listening to that song, I would often wonder what was in store for 'my time' that lay out ahead of me. Having been saved at the age of eight, I began to lay my plans of how I would grow up and serve the Lord. In my early teens, I felt a call to preach. I remember taking my Bible to bed with me and reading verses until I found a 'text'. Then, when the lights would go out, I would clutch the Bible to my chest and would preach up a 'storm'. Of course it had to be a silent sermon, because my brothers lay sleeping in the beds next to me. If I woke them, I don't think I would have gotten much of an 'amen'! So, I tried to be quiet, and yet still get my point across to my imaginary congregation. That seemed to mark the direction my life would go and how I would spend a lot my time of 'Summer'.
Now that I am well into 'Summer' and can see 'Fall' just ahead, I often wonder if I have 'redeemed' my time and made it count. When I look back, I see a lot detours that I took off of the main path God had laid out for me. I see distractions, many of which caused me to shift my focus from the 'purpose' that I knew God had laid out for me to pursue. Each time that I got back on track, it wasn't without some pain and regret of having wasted valuable 'time'. Thank God, his mercy and grace always pursued me until I was safely back in the center of his will. Each time I learned a valuable lesson that has served to help me make better decisions.
While I don't preach much anymore, I do have the privilege of singing the little sermonettes, as Ronnie Page used to say, that God gave to songwriters. This has been a highlight of my 'Summer' and I thank God that I can be a part of blessing folks with this marvelous music. Of course, we sing to many who are in the 'Fall' of their 'time'. It is so rewarding for us when we hear the stories of how blessed you folks are to hear the old songs sung the old fashioned way and the many memories that it brings to mind.
It is my aim, and I hope your's too, to do what Paul says he did with his life in Philippian 3:13 and 14, "Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, leaving those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." It is my prayer that while we all have used and misused this wonderful gift called 'time', we can still start afresh and anew each day with the goal to fulfil whatever 'purpose' God calls us to in the 'now'.
