Yes, we're on the cover of the October Singing News. Yes, we look good.
As I write this morning, we are awaiting the rain from hurricane Lili to set in. I'm sure this means we'll have to mow the yard one more time and then the summer season will be over. I came through the bottoms last night and it looks like Travis and O.D. will start getting their rice out soon. It's also time to get the stove cleaned out and ready for a fire. Seems like just a few weeks ago we were longing for Spring to arrive.
I think we have made a full recovery from the National Quartet Convention. As usual, the blessings were just too many to name.
We had a short sojourn at Silver Dollar City last month along with the Perrys, the Cumberland Quartet, the Galloways, and the Freemans. Oh yeah, McSpadden was there too. Oh yeah, and Bro. Kirksey was there too. We had some great folks to sing to at all our shows and the evening concert with the whole gang was exceptional. Some of you know where I'm going with this though.
The highlight of the trip to Silver Dollar City is always riding their new roller coaster Wildfire. A lot of times I have to ride by myself, which I'm perfectly willing to do, but this year was made really enjoyable by having someone to ride with. Curt Davis is a young man with his head on straight and his priorities in order. He has a real love for roller coasters and is not ashamed to stand up and say, "I'll ride!" After sound check everybody else was busy facing their stuffles, I mean stuffing their faces. This is where most folks whimp out. Not Curt Davis. Straightway we went to Wildfire and were able to ride 10 or 12 times before we had to get back. Me, Jacob, and Joshua went back the next day and got in another 20 times or so. Danna rode a couple of times too, but she's not really in the Lord's will about this roller coaster thing. I'm not even gonna bring up the motorcycle this month.
NOTE: For those of you who were at Silver Dollar City and have not heard - I did find my pants.
Let me talk about something just a bit different for the time we have left. (I know some of you think everything I talk about is just a bit different.)
Tuesday night we attended a program at school promoting reading and literacy. Without going into an extended discussion here, the speaker that evening made a lasting impression on me as to the importance of learning to read and communicate. He used an illustration of the Jews instilling in their children a love for reading during their dispersion that was most impressive. Most folks can't believe we survive without cable or satellite, but last night as I tuned in to the season premier of Law & Order (You know I'm not gonna miss that.), I realized it was the first time I had turned the TV on for any amount of time in a few weeks. I couldn't even remember the last time I'd seen the local news and weather. I hadn't missed much. Without diminishing the importance of staying in the Word - daily - let me encourage you to find something of interest and read. And I'm not talking about just a bunch of religious books either. Get something that's just fun to read. It is vitally important to get your kids interested in reading and making it fun for them, instead of sitting in front of that mind-numbing TV all the time. The impact it will have on their future is immeasurable.
Until next month,
Jonathan
