HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!
I don't often make New Year's Resolutions because I believe, as a Child of God, that we can make a "fresh start" or change our direction on July 1st, November 10th, as well as January 1st or any other day of the year. Any moment the Lord convicts us to change is the best time to start ! However, I am making a New Year's Resolution for 2006.........inspired by my 5 year old son, Cason. When asked what he would do differently in 2006, he quickly replied, "I'M GONNA PLAY MORE !!" I started to laugh at his response until I realized that this boy who loves to play also loves God and loves to pray. He loves his family and he even loves school. He does other things besides play but playing is definitely a big part of his daily life. Could that be one reason why he is so healthy, happy and carefree ?
It seems that as we become adults, we adopt the idea that playing is only for the immature or self-centered. There certainly are adults that shirk responsibility and only want to do what pleases them. But aren't they the minority ? Aren't most adults out of balance the other direction ? All we conscentrate on is work, bills, the high-cost of living, and our day-to-day duties. Why do you think that high blood pressure, cancer, stroke, and heart failure are on the rampage. Maybe we don't play enough or not at all....
I just spent 2 hours playing a new video game with my kids. I didn't even win, matter of fact, I was slaughtered by my 8 year old. But I had fun ! Yes, there are dirty dishes in my sink and a pile of laundry that won't clean itself, and I knew I had to get this article done and I need to squeeze grocery shopping in there somewhere. And I just killed 2 hours playing BUT I find myself smiling while conquering all the duties on my "to do" list. And they even seem to be going by faster. Maybe, just maybe there is something to this "playing thing."
So let it be known that, for me, the year 2006 will involve more PLAY TIME, less worry, less stress, less fear, less sadness...... Who knows, I'll probably get more work done because these negative factors that steal my time and effort will diminish. I will certainly be more healthy because a merry heart doeth good like a medicine. My time with the Lord will be elevated because I can focus solely on Him rather than being distracted by these negative emotions that steal my conscentration. My family time will be more valuable because our playing together will create memories that a clean house, a solid income and paid bills will not.
I love the old saying, "A family that prays together, stays together." Our loved ones need to see us praying but they also need to see us playing. I believe that a family that PRAYS together should also PLAY together so that they will enjoy staying together.
May this year be the most blessed you've ever known,
Karen
