The Vocal Coach - Recording a Project

Recording a project is a very exciting and expensive venture. But it is a very important part of your ministry. Not only does it help fund your ministry it also leaves a part of your ministry behind after you are gone.

And the next time special music is needed it will remind them of you. But I think most importantly is the fact that it lets the blessings that the person enjoyed the night of the concert to be lived over every time they hear your project. And that is the best part about a recording.

When we think about the impact that a recording can have on our ministry and our audience, it is extremely important that we only put the very best recording we can possible do out for the public to hear. Don’t just do something to get by.

Never go to record without a good producer and a vocal coach. They will help you get the most for your time and money. Hiring these two professionals can and will take the stress out of the process and let you be able to concentrate on doing your best vocally. The producer does the work of coordinating the project and this allows you to be relaxed. The vocal coach will have you ready to go into the studio very well prepared. We all know that when you feel prepared you will relax and you always do better on your vocals.

Yes, it will cost you more up front to hire these professionals but the end result will be well worth the expense. The secular world would never think of recording without these necessary people and it is easy to see the difference of where Southern Gospel Music is compared to the secular music.

We have to start putting out some quality music if we are every going to impact our world the way we need too. When you go in a music store the SG section is the smallest area in the store. Have ever wondered why? Listen to some of the music we are turning out today and that will answer your question. Somehow we have the impression that as long as we have something on our record table it’s okay.

I get asked to listen to projects often and it is sad to say they all sound just alike. They aren’t exciting enough to hold my attention. The pitches are poor and the songs do not move me. You very rarely hear interpretation, diction, or dynamics in these recordings.

Most of the singers in SG do not even know what those three words mean when applied to music. Even some of our professional groups do not understand.
You can tell by listening to their concerts. We somehow feel that as long as we are singing as loud as we can we are good. And that is just not so, loud is just loud. The quality is distorted when we sing at full volume.

Full volume should be saved for those special times that we need to build up a song. And that should be used sparingly.

We are going to cover some very important material dealing with recording the next few months. There are things we must consider before we ever spend a dime. And I think you will find these articles very informative.

Until next time, keep singing His praises!

I could not agree with you more. I am constantly berating so much of what I hear until I sometimes think it's me. Gospel artists with very few exceptions believe that to sing in or with the spirit involves omitting vocal understanding and support. This vocal reaching and straining is not only distastful but very damaging to the vocal aperture. Gospel singer's of praise who fancy themselves as artists would do well to remember Corinthians 14:15 "...I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also."

Wow, how timely. We are currently recording a new project. In the den. It has been in the works...for close to a year. We can do a great job recording and an alright job of mixing and have done that before. The biggest debate in the group is whether or not to take it to be mixed professionaly or mix it ourselves.

It seems God has not blessed this project yet as far as for finances. We've had a lot of weird things go wrong. We don't know why, God's red flags or Satan's opposition. Do we save for this or Charge it? Do we mix it ourselves, using what we have "within" to save money? Like the lady that kept pouring out the oil into the containers.

Comments and advice would be appreciated.

Where would a quartet in the WNC area find a producer for a recording?

This is interesting reading from my perspective. Can't wait to read the next several installments. Thanks . . . Michael Sykes
