We are going to continue with the booking series again this month. We want to think about planning your tours or bookings. There are a few important things to consider when we start booking. I know that some of us would just like to get bookings at any cost but there are some things we need to keep in mind when booking. So let’s look at those issues.
First you want to consider the distance. If you are a weekend group you want to think about how long it will take you to get there and back. You want to be able to get home in enough time to get your rest before work on Monday morning. If you are always tired at work on Monday it is not a very good witness to your employer or your coworkers. They should not have to pick up your slack because you are too tired to function.
Here’s a suggestion, take your atlas and draw a circle out from your town about 200 miles and start booking within that circle. There will be enough churches in the circle to keep you singing for awhile. You will be able to get there and back in plenty of time to get your rest.
If you are booking several dates try to book so that you are not backtracking if possible. Think about going to your farthest point first and working your way home. After a long weekend you are going to be tired and you will be glad not to have to drive as far to get home. Always try to organize your trips as much as the churches will let you.
Remember that you can tell the church that you aren’t able to make a date if it is the same weekend as a date already scheduled on the other side of the state. I know you think you have to take what you can get but that is not true. If you let the person that called know you can’t do it on that date but would love to come on another day they will fine a time. Besides, if you try to make both dates you will be so tired that you will not do your best for them. When you explain the time factor they will be glad to set up on another date. God does not expect us to kill ourselves but wants us to be wise in our choices.
Another thing to consider when booking several dates in the same area and that is do not book any dates closer that 50 miles apart. If the churches are to close it will split your crowd and neither will do very well. Help your churches by thinking about this when booking. They want to have a big crowd for you and so do you. Save the second place for another date in the future. It is always best to try to book it right then while they are on the phone.
You can really run into problems with distance between stops if two people are trying to book the same group. Try to let one person with organizational skills do the booking. You will be glad and your body will be glad, too.
Always remember that when you get fatigued the first thing that suffers is your voice. You can’t do well if you are worn out and our audiences deserve our best performance. It takes a lot out of you when you give for your heart and minister and if you don’t have anything to give when you get there you really should not go. The two most important things a singer needs to remember are to get plenty of rest and lots of water.
Next month we are going to cover what to do after we have booked a date.
So, be looking forward to that information.
