While there are plenty of things in any area of life that we can find negative in, sometimes we must make ourselves look for the many good things that are happening. I thought that I would look for some of the good things that Southern Gospel Radio is doing and even some way to improve on that good. First of all, Southern Gospel Radio is in my opinion playing the very best music in the world. It is the very best for several reasons. First is the message. Of all the important things in life to say or sing about, the Gospel is certainly the most important one I can think of. For the most part, Southern Gospel Radio is playing very solid songs with the Gospel message that is inspiring and uplifting to their audience. Secondly, the musical stylings of Southern Gospel Music are distinct. At times there is a hint of Country or maybe some Blues or maybe even some Pop. For sure you hear a little touch of traditional Black Gospel in there, but in general Southern Gospel Radio is playing a style of music that is different from anything else being aired. With such a distinctive sound, it?s not one that we tend to ?boogie? or dance to, so the approach of Southern Gospel Radio is going to be a little different. No doubt it is entertaining. Many a long trip has been made bearable by the entertaining sound coming from that low Bass singer sliding down, or that high Tenor singer screeching out a high note. Then there have been times all alone in my care when the weight of the world seemed to be on my shoulders, that a soul stirring ballad came on and I was blessed to the heart of my soul. Because of that, I can say that Southern Gospel Radio has been a form of Ministry to me also. Now are there some areas that need improvement? There sure are. One of the big ways is in Professionalism of our DJs. I understand that many of the radio stations just do not have the money to hire first rate ?professional? DJs. Because of this many of the DJs are minimum paid people who are doing the best that they can, or even many of the station managers and owners are having to put on many different caps just to keep the station going. So, it?s either use the DJs that they can afford, even though it may not be as professional as it should be, or close the doors and have no Southern Gospel Radio at all. So much of what is happening, or not happening in SG Radio is because of the money that just doesn?t seem to be there. I must say that there does seem to be an answer though. I see some of the bigger SG Radio stations making a good profit, and I see many of the Contemporary Stations making a good profit. So I have to ask myself this question. Why do some of the stations stay above board making good profit while many of the smaller ones are biting the dust. I have come to the opinion that much of it is education. While this may not be the total answer, I think that at least part of the answer can be found in attending educational seminars. One of the best that I have seen is provided by the GMA on Super Tuesday, this year on April 8, 2003. Having been to several of these seminars, I can attest that some very valuable information is given out at this event. The speakers at the GMA seminars are the same speakers that the secular stations pay thousands of dollars to hear. I want to stress that they are top notch speakers with a wealth of information on how to make your Southern Gospel Station go from barely getting by to be a profitable institution that can afford to upgrade the quality of broadcasting, which will only make Southern Gospel and Southern Gospel Radio more popular. This seminar is not just for DJs, however it is for the station managers and owners, where they can find this wealth of information on how to raise revenues and increase sales in order to make his station better. For only $99.00 any SG Station will get a full day of great ideas for improving your station, which includes lunch. The first 25 stations to register will receive a gift pack valued at $100.00, including one night hotel accommodations. Every registrant will be eligible for some giveaways including a Dell Computer, and a handsome BarBQ Grill. Is this a commercial? Well, no. This is a sincere encouragement for Southern Gospel Radio to better itself and expand the entertainment and Ministry that they are doing today, and to do it more effectively. I?m going to be there, and I hope to see many of the Southern Gospel Radio people there also. For more information see: www.southerngospelnews.com/issues/supertuesday.php
