If It’s Broke Just Ignore It

We're all familiar with the saying, “If It Ain't Broke, Don't Fix It” – and that's sound advice.   Why fiddle with something that's working just fine?   However, I'd have to say that when it comes to Southern Gospel Radio, it appears that we might have a whole new saying we've invented all by ourselves – “If It Is Broke, Just Ignore It And Hope That It Will Fix Itself”.

I know we've been down this road before in my monthly articles, but I cannot stop addressing something in our industry that's really broke and needs fixin' . . .   Southern Gospel Radio .   We simply cannot ignore the problem any longer.   We're ignoring our future if we act like it ain't broke.   It's broken…….   Bad.

Another famous saying, “Believe half of what you see and none of what you read” must have been uttered by someone reading the charts in some of the leading Southern Gospel Music Publications.   Why do I say such a thing?   Below are the charts from four of our leading publications.   I've listed the top twenty.   They are all from the same time period (July 2006), and they clearly illustrate why I say “Southern Gospel Radio is Broken”.

There are about six songs that even appear on all the charts, which I've highlighted.   There are a total of SIXTY-THREE different songs listed in the Top TWENTY .   How is it possible for four different publications in the same industry to be so far off in the twenty slots?   We must have some radio stations on Jupiter and Mars.   I've listed them below so you can see for yourself.   And you can believe what you are reading below.

The only song that all the charts are somewhat close on is “Sky Full of Angels”

Southern Gospel Music is the only area of the music industry that has such a ridiculous attitude toward its own radio charts.   Why don't we just let every group make up their own radio charts?   Each group would put themselves in the #1 position, and then every one of their ads in every leading SGM Publication would have the claim – “#1 Song”.   Sure, it's false as science fiction, but in reality, what we have is just as absurd.

Until and unless we adopt a unified and uniform method of compiling accurate and honest charts then what's the point in having charts at all?   I'm not one to give up the fight and go home, and so I keep believing that if we just keep telling the Gospel Music Truth, then someday we might have accurate radio charts in SGM.   I still believe that “honesty is the best policy”.

I have my own opinions about how to fix Southern Gospel radio and I would love to hear yours.

As always, I welcome your comments.

God Bless You,

Nick Bruno

Well, a manager of a local group told me that his group had to pay "x" amount of dollars per month to get played on the station. He eventually got tired of paying and the station quit spinning his group's stuff, according to him.

Yet, as wrong as it is ethically and musically, I'm curious as to why a station could get in trouble with the law for this practice. You could pay that same station for air time to preach....if they choose to charge you for air time to play your music, do you have a legal gripe? Mind you, I'm agreeing with you 100%; it is a travesty to do pay for play. But is it illegal?

I agree with Dan,In my neck of the woods, which is southeast Kentucky,I can't get southern gospel music in my truck. I drive a truck for a living and new music in my area is from the early 90's. I would love to have a station that played the Kingdom Heirs,The Perrys,EH&SS;,even if it was only for a few hours a day.

ransomed's avatar Back in the fifties, there was a scandal called "payola" where record companies were paying dj's to play their artists stuff. The government came down on that and, if I remember right, people went to jail for it. I know that a few well-known dj's at the time lost their jobs.
Here we submitted our projects to the dj who handled the local show. He played them some and the station made a collective decision that to play some of our stuff on the nights where they play the national groups. They picked several of the local artists of higher quality and added them to their regular playlist.
The preaching segments you refer to are considered advertising dollars. You could go and buy air time and play your music for a solid period of time, but that is different than paying the station or a dj to play your songs.

Nick,
As you know, and here we go again, music charts(any) should reflect sales(Billboard, the true benchmark can attest to that). A song is #1 because people really want to hear it, buy it more than any other current song available, the artist has had a performing impact in the area/region either personal or TV- it is a liget #1 song.
In Gospel music, #1 means ONLY this:
Record companies promote it to hype-
1.each other
2.other artists/ wanna be's
B.that the "four and no more" keep calling their favorite station over and over again and beg them to play it( so the less that 850 - 1000 in the total market or KORN can hear it).
C.DJs just simply make a personal call for the area( if they are country oriented, quartet oriented, contemporary oriented, you will get that preference for that area- regardless of what it should be).

OK,lets really be honest and forthright- Charts really only keep the above folks crazy and frustrated when it has absolutely nothing to do with a real Kingdom impact.
I'm not saying that anything is wrong in wanting to do like everyone else that markets music nationally... or maybe I am. It doesn't matter.
This is strickly the opinion/comment portion for your article. There will be readers that will be furious with these comments, but I have absolutely no agenda other than opinion.
As you know, properly pumped, in Gospel music it is totally possible to hype #1 and there not be the first record sold or the performing artist actually be a studio creation and not tour the first date.
Lets just stay focused in the fact that Charts are for......who?............and really what in Gospel music? Getting them in line?........yeah, right.
You and I both know that Jesus could absolutely care less.

It's not illegal to pay for play as long as the radio station is up front about if. If they put a disclaimer at the beginning or end of the song that says something like "XYZ Group paid for this play" it would be OK. It's illegal when the radio station or DJ accepts money to play the song and then acts as if they didn't.

ransomed's avatar Keith,
That would be covered under what I already described as basically "paid advertising". So I addressed that. What it sounded like the other post said was that someone was taking money to play that groups music and that nothing was mentioned about paid advertising. If the group didn't understand that when the money stopped they wouldn't get played anymore, then it was probably not being done legally.

David Bruce Murray's avatar Southern Gospel radio is broken, but I'm not sure what chart discrepancies have to do with anything.

Different charting methods are going to get different results. Weekly charts compiled with one week delay and printed instantly online aren't going to match monthly charts that are printed with a 2-4 month delay.

If SG radio was good, there would still be differences in charts that are compiled by different methods and printed with or without a delay.

SG radio does need to be fixed. Why aren't key industry entities buying SG radio stations and doing something about it? That's the question that needs to be asked. Why aren't the few successful, good quality radio stations that we have buying smaller stations and upgrading the quality? Why isn't Gaither weighing into Southern Gospel radio? Why isn't NQC? Why aren't key concert promoters getting into the SG radio business?

It's an element that's missing from the equation and like Nick said, no one seems to be doing anything about it.

Well, I don't believe Nick's article said that SGM radio is broken BECAUSE the charts are so askew. I believe he's saying inaccurate charts are a SYMPTOM of the disease. For example, when someone has strep throat, the fever is a SYMPTOM of the disease, but the disease itself is Strep. When you get rid of the cause of the fever - strep- you get rid of the fever.

I think the greater question should be: What is the disease that is making SGM radio ill?

Is it payola? (By the way, how can anyone question whether or not it's illegal to "pay for play"????? Does the name Attorney General Elliot Spitzer of NY and his recent lawsuits against the major record companies come to anyone's mind? How about the MILLIONS of dollars they paid in settlements??? If a group gives a radio station a candy bar in exchange for airplay... it's "pay for play".. and it should be honestly admitted, and it should NEVER enter in to the station's chart compilation. It's not illegal to pay someone to play your music. It's illegal to HIDE that you paid someone to play your music, and then get on a chart as if you EARNED your spot.)

What is the sickness that is plaging SGM radio?
I don't have answers, but I have lots of questions.

Secondly, let's be honest, It SGM charts were compiled by sales - like every other chart in every other area of music - Bill Gaither would take every spot. The charts would be pointless. Well they're pointless now.

And if the charts were based on sales, how would the sales be tabulated? Would we get a "record table" count from every group on Monday morning?

Maybe the answer to SGM charts is to simply NOT HAVE ANY.

Why should Gaither buy in to SGM radio? I would imagine that the fact that you can turn on any TV station at any hour of the day or night and almost always find Gaither somewhere could be the reason he doesn't bother with SGM radio? What would be his reason?

And NGC could only buy radio stations that came with matching suits...I don't know how many of those exist.

My vote: Do away with the charts, and simply concede that Gaither wins every chart every week. And be done with it.

David Bruce Murray's avatar jj,
I understood he was saying dissimilar charts are a symptom of the problem.

I was saying that they aren't. If every radio station played only the best quality SG available, the charts would still be different due to the different ways in which they are tabulated.

Doing away with the charts to fix radio would be like saying, "Oh, the bass singer is flat again. I think I'll fire the tenor."

I agree there's currently no logical way to compile data for charts by sales.

The disease that is making SG ill has nothing to do with payola. It has everything to do with tin ears and weak spines.

Why shouldn't Gaither buy into SG radio? Being on TV hasn't stopped him from forming record labels to develop new Christian artists. It hasn't stopped him from investing in virtually every other area of the Christian music business. He owns a Christian retail store, for example. One of his greatest strength is establishing businesses and then delegating QUALIFIED people to operate them. I wasn't suggesting that he start up an "all Homecoming all the time" radio station, though that would probably be OK too. I used specific examples, but I used several to make the point that there are several companies that could invest in SG radio and make it better if they ever take the notion.

Efforts have been made to improve SG at every level except radio. Labels like Daywind raise the bar for every other SG record label by putting out quality product consistently. Concert promoters like NQC raise the bar for other concert promoters by putting out a quality product like NQC. Gaither raises the bar for everyone by putting quality in everything he is involved with.

But SG radio has been ignored for decades, continually falling behind in terms of advancement in technology and knowledgeable staff, as if it doesn't need fixing.

OK...I agree with most of what you said. My referring to payola had to do with previous posts.

I read Bruno every month because he says what so many people seem to be afraid to say. His previous columns have dealt with many of the issues that are making SGM sick - poor quality singing, poor quality recording, less than average songs, and record companies who scam up and coming and naive new artists. The quality of the music that plays on many SGM radio stations is HORRIBLE. So, the truth is that the radio programmers who SAY they love SGM are the ones who are actually DESTROYING it by playing music that is BAD, BAD music.

Concerning Gaither, I would say that although the "powers that be" in SGM are reluctant to admit it his TV presence has done more for SGM than all the publications, SGM radio stations and promoters combined. My point being, if you were Gaither, why would you care about SG radio? Would owning radio stations have more of an effect to help SGM than being on hundreds of TV stations world wide??

Anyway, this discussion is not about Gaither or whether he should own a radio station.

Just posting my opinion.
Solution: gather together all the radio programmers...and have them understand that the way they are doing things is KILLING the industry. And if this knowledge isn't enough to convict them of their wicked ways.. then I think they should be forced to work at polka only radio stations.
