My friends, there is hope for the Southern Gospel Music Industry. I sense a new feeling of optimism within the ranks, especially among some of our younger and newer leaders.
In some of the meetings I've attended recently, the one thing that stands out to me is that these new guys and gals get it. They see what's happened to our industry over the last twenty years and realize that we've been sold a "Bill of Goods". The obstructionist attitude of our leadership, along with the "Line My Pockets" mentality has eroded our industry to the point that we have a "lock" on last place in every category.
But…it's a new day, and recent events indicate a changing of the guard. The new "kids", bright, aggressive, talented young people, are my kind of people. They care about our industry and how to make it better. When you talk to them about the "Mr. Weasels" in our industry, they understand the problem, and are committed to raising the bar for everyone and educating our artists about the "scams". Oh Happy Day!
When Ronald Reagan became President in 1981, America was embroiled in a cold war with Russia. When President Reagan labeled the Soviet Union "The Evil Empire", many of our leaders cowered in fear over the potential repercussions of that label, but history validates the President in his assessment.
One of the greatest moments for President Reagan, indeed for the world, was on June 12,1987, when he stood at the Brandenburg Gate in West Berlin, Germany and boldly declared, "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall"! The wall came down and Communism was defeated.
I'm certainly no Ronald Reagan…but I do have a statement to make,
Mr. Cumbee, tear out the right page of the Singing News Chart!
We do not need a top 80…we need an accurate top 40. That will be a first step in righting an industry that has floundered in mediocrity for the last 20 years.
Call me a dreamer, call me a fool if you wish, but I feel a change a'comin'. I hear a "swan song" and I see some folks exiting….stage left. Wait a minute…do I hear the "Fat Lady" warming up?…yes..yes…she is, and she's singing…… "Happy Days Are Here Again"….you go girl!
As always, I welcome your comments.
God Bless You,
Nick Bruno
