For a month I thought about this article. In honor of Mother's Day, I wanted to highlight the favorite songs of some of the "moms" on our label and tell you some of their favorite memories. I even thought about telling a few of my own favorite stories about my mom, her mom, and yes, even being a mom and how my children have affected me. I asked a prayer for direction every day for a month? but I didn't hear the answer until just a few days ago.
How many times do we as Christians sometimes forget that God is still God? We run and do and go and all the while believe that we are the ones who determine the outcome of our day, week, and month. I must confess, as a working mother with two smaller children, it takes an act of "divine juggling" to accomplish the deeds in one 12-hour day. It's hard for me to know what day it is or even what my own name is. Many moms can relate to this and my money is on the fact that many dads can too. But the fact is, He is still God and He does move in our lives, in sometimes-subtle ways, to get our attention. My question to you is, are you listening for His direction? Are you in tune with what the Father wants you to do?
Case in point for me was the direction for this month's article. I had it all figured out. "May is for mothers," I thought. To better illustrate my thoughts for this article, I was going to report some of the happenings I was blessed to be a part of recently as I spent time with the fabulously talented ladies that comprise the brand new CD, "Best of Friends;" Karen Peck Gooch, Joyce Martin McCollough and Sheri Easter. You all know how marvelously gifted these women are from listening to their music, seeing them in concert or hearing them on the radio or television. As the street date for their new record drew near, they were involved in many activities here in Nashville, which opened some doors for me for some "one-on-one " time with each of these ladies.
On route to an interview with the Solid Gospel Network, I asked Sheri Easter what song she sings that reminds her of her mother, and she said without hesitation, "She Loved" (found on the My, Oh My! CD- Spring Hill.) She went on to tell me that her mother was "perfect," and that she couldn't remember one bad thing about her when she was growing up. Sheri actually wrote this song about her mom. The chorus of the song, says Sheri, "encapsulates my mom perfectly." (To be clear, Sheri's mom, Polly Lewis, is very much alive) The chorus of this ballad speaks of a woman and how she would be remembered once she had gone home to the Lord:
I hope they'd say
She loved
More than anything else
She loved
With all of her heart
She loved
Everyone she believed in
She loved, oh, she loved
I would recommend this song, and the whole cd for that matter, to anyone searching for a fun, musical gift for your mom and for the whole family. Once again, you can find "She Loved" on Jeff and Sheri Easter's CD, My, Oh My!, in Christian bookstores nationwide.
As the day progressed, the three girls sat around a microphone and recounted stories of their personal experiences of "being moms." Karen Peck Gooch told the story of the lesson she learned the day her son Matthew decided to fully embed himself in a mud puddle while she watched from the kitchen window. She recounts," It was all I could do, as a mom who doesn't want their child to get dirty or hurt or...and the "or's" go on and on? NOT go and get him out of the mud, but I stayed planted firmly in that kitchen. I later knew it was God's way of teaching me that I have to let my child learn lessons on his own and to be his own person."
Joyce felt led of the Lord to speak to those young women who are "wanna be mothers" who have not yet been blessed with children. She knows the turmoil first hand of those who have and continue to yearn for God's favor of children. Though she has been given the "miracle" of her two children, she states to those women, " Stay encouraged?God has you on his mind. Keep praying and keep believing and keep letting the Lord minister to you peace and hope and faith, because He has a plan for your life. Sometimes that plan includes children and sometimes it doesn't. The Lord knows what's best. I will continue to pray that God will bless you like He has me."
The "Best of Friends" CD has a song on it that is a battle cry for every mother called "I'm A Mom." Written by Kenna West, another incredible woman who just so happens to be a mom herself, "I'm A Mom" perfectly translates the trials and joys of every mother and is festively delivered from the heart of three of Christian music's most talented "moms."
One verse of the song describe a typical day in the life of all moms:
I see every hour that's on the clock
I hit the ground running and I never stop
While I do the work of a hundred men
Further on, the lyric paints the picture of the strength of today's mom:
Yes it's true as some suggest
I should wear an "S" upon my chest and have my face on the cover of a magazine
I can leap tall buildings in a single bound
And on the average, pond for pound
I'm the "best-est" mom my kids have ever seen
The heart of the song illustrates the whole gift of being a mom:
When I tuck in my kids and turn out the lights
Say "I love you" and hold you tight
I remember how glad I am to be a mom!
This song is masterfully crafted and is highlighted by a common thread woven throughout the lyric in the chorus, which changes after each verse but always pounds home the description of being the "ring master of a three ring circus that I fondly call my home." This song alone is worth the price of the CD, so why not treat your mother to the ultimate Mother's day gift, Best of Friends from Joyce, Karen and Sheri- available now at your local Christian bookstores.
So there it was, all laid out on paper for this month's issue, pictures and all, only God whispered,
"Remember the mom's of the fighting men and women serving in Iraqi Freedom."
Driving home from work, I am listening to a radio account of two soldiers who were offered the opportunity to call their families back home from the battlefield to let them know they were ok. BOTH of them declined to call THEIR families and opted to call the mother of a fallen comrade to share with her their deepest sympathies and to offer their stories of remembrances of her son, their friend and brother. I was moved to tears and had to pull over.
I heard God whisper to me in the form of a story on the radio. Have you heard Him whisper to you? It can be so subtle. Can you hear Him?
So I ask you to say a prayer of peace for the moms who have lost sons and daughters. And also pray for the worried moms who have children serving in our armed forces overseas, as they wait to hear news from their loved ones fighting for the freedoms of the oppressed. I ask God's blessings and mercies on them and on you.
I urge you to listen for God's whisper when it comes and follow His direction for your life. Remember your mothers as well with a call or visit. You are just as much their gift to them as they are to you.
Until next month, God bless us all!
Happy Mother's Day Mom and Mama Jean! I love you both
Happy Mother's Day to you, Peggy, Love you!
