This month I thought I would pay tribute to someone in Southern Gospel Music that has showed me kindness during my short time in the industry, Arthur Rice.
During my days working at The Southern Gospel Music Hall of Fame and Museum, I was a young and broke hopeful waiting to “make it” into the business. I pulled up with a new car in the parking lot at Dollywood (it was actually used but new to me!). As I sported my wheels around for all the Kingdom Heirs and SGMA Staff, Arthur came over to me in a fatherly way and told me I needed new tires before I drove the car any further. I told him I was broke and all of my extra money from my $6 an hour job at The SGMA gift shop was going on a mission trip with my church. He told me I really needed to get them fixed. I shrugged my shoulders and put my Dollywood name tag on and headed in to dust the museum!
A few days later I left for my trip and Arthur asked me for my keys while I was away. I thought he needed to borrow my car so I tossed him my keys and jumped on the plane for my first overseas mission trip. I returned two weeks later full of exciting experiences I obtained on my journeys. I went to work to see everyone and Arthur came up to me and told me I had an appointment for new tires at the garage. I told him I would do it when I had the money and he told me they are expecting you and the bill is already paid.
I thanked Arthur and left for the garage and a tear rolled down my face. I thanked God for allowing me the opportunity to serve Him on a mission trip and that He was meeting my needs for new tires through Arthur.
Arthur and Angie Rice have become lifelong friends and have contributed greatly to Southern Gospel Music. Arthur, the lead singer for the Kingdom Heirs sings regularly at Dollywood during their open season and travels during the off months. They have shared God's love to millions of people, I am thankful I have been one of them.
Next time you see Arthur Rice thank him for keeping this West Virginia kid safe on the road!
