FA LA LA LA LA, LA LA LA LA ! ! !

Who would have ever believed that this closing line of lyric would be part of one of our best loved Christmas Classics!

Or how about . . .

MISFORTUNE SEEMED IT'S LOT
WE FELL INTO A DRIFTING BANK
AND THEN WE GOT UPSOT ! Upsot???

As the old Chuck Berry song says, IT JUST GOES TO SHOW, YOU NEVER CAN TELL !

My gift to you this Christmas season is to give you permission to write whatever you want to. You can even end your lines in a preposition like I did in that last sentence.

Your song may use nonsense words like DECK THE HALLS and JINGLE BELLS does. Do you remember DA DO RUN RUN RUN, YAKITY YACK. Feel free to throw some SHOO BE DO BE BOP's in there if you feel like it.

You might break all the rules of songwriting, but don't worry about it. YOU NEVER CAN TELL !

Your song may not rhyme like it should. Who cares? The chorus of BECAUSE HE LIVES doesn't rhyme. YOU NEVER CAN TELL !

Your song may even be written to the tune of another song ! ! ! But so was AMAZING GRACE and HE LOOKED BEYOND MY FAULT. Just make sure that the tune is Public Domain, or that you've saved back enough Christmas money to pay for the lawsuit that you get for using a Copyrited tune!
You just NEVER CAN TELL what is going strike the ear of a generation of listeners.

Now I can't promise you that when you abandon all the rules that you will write a "Classic Hit" , but YOU NEVER CAN TELL.
Just write the very best songs you can, and enjoy the process of writing. It can be a lot of fun. Being creative is fun. So for this Christmas season, HAVE FUN and WRITE SONGS that make you want to sing.

Merry Christmas and have a safe and blessed Holiday Season.

Until next time, keep on writing!

Mr. Williams,
Where can I find articles of this in the past? I love to write and think you are one of the best out there. I would love to read what else you have written about songwriting.

I love this article and sometimes a really great song comes along that some of the lines do not actually rhyme.Enjoy your articles.

Daryl,

I just wanted to add a post, because I felt so bad for you that Nick Bruno has way more comments. I sure hope this one makes you feel better.
