I want to start this month's article by expressing my thanks to Crossroads Music Group. They have recently offered me an exclusive writer's contract, which I have accepted. In addition to the writer's agreement, they have also signed the Daryl Williams Trio to a long term recording contract.
I am very excited about building our new business relationship and friendship with this company that I previously was not well aquatinted with, but have come to respect so highly in the last few months.
This new business venture brings me to my main point. As we were selecting songs for our first project on Sonlight Records, Chris White began to look at the songs I had written over the last year. He chose some songs for our project that I had never intended for my group to sing. I have always tried to write a variety of material. Many times when I am writing, I will picture a particular recording artist in my mind singing the song that I am writing. I will ask myself questions like "How would Ivan Parker, or the Crabb Family say this?"
By getting a mental image of the Talley Trio, or The Kingsmen in my mind, it can really help me in terms of selecting a music and language style in which to write. It also helps me to reach beyond the way I would normally say things, and say something in a different way.
I would like to encourage you to do the same thing. It may take you in a whole new direction that you have never been before. You might be very surprised at what you are capable of writing. Try looking at the Top 40 charts and select an artist that does not fit the style of music that you currently write. Then try writing something that sounds like what they would sing.
Writing for different artist's style has been what has helped me get songs cut by Larnelle Harris and The Inspirations. I have also had songs recorded by The Hoppers, Jimmy Swaggart and The Gaither Vocal Band. None of these artists sound alike, and neither did the songs of mine that they chose to record.
By writing with different artists in mind, I had a good variety of song styles to choose from for our CD.
Please keep the Daryl Williams Trio in your prayers as we travel, and be looking for new music from us in March 2005.
Until next time, keep on writing!
