This article will cover a topic that I hope will help put you at ease when you are on stage. We are going to talk about nervous habits. Many times we have nervous habits and we don’t realize it. This can be distracting to our audience. I hope that I can share some things that will help you. So let’s get started.

Have you ever seen someone in concert and you were not listening to what they were singing because you were to busy watching something they were doing with their hands, feet, mic cord, or even their facial expression? I have, it is hard not to focus on those repeated movements. To best way to find out if you are displaying a nervous habit is to have someone video tape your concert and then sit down and watch yourself and look for those nervous habits. That is the only way that you can correct a habit is to become aware of it. Some nervous habits to look for are shifting your weight from foot to foot, changing hands continuously with your mic, or keeping your eyes closed through the complete song. These are some of the nervous habits that I have seen very often.

Having good posture and keeping your weight on the balls of your feet will keep you planted and will limit the swaying motion. Keep a check on your hands and watch what they are doing while you are singing. Think about your facial expressions by practicing in front of a mirror. Use a full-length mirror and watch all of your body movements.

Overcoming a bad habit can be difficult but the best way, of course, is through prayer. Ask God to help you relax and have confidence while you are singing. You have to remember that it is God working through you that is doing the ministering. When we make ourselves available to God He is responsible for what happens from the minute we step on the stage or platform. Be confident that He will lead you and will use you to touch hearts. Having confidence in your source of power and strength goes a long way in reducing your nervous habits.

Another way is to be confident is to know you can sing your song well. That is where the vocal instructors and coaches come in the picture. Don’t be afraid to get vocal help if you lack confidence in this area. We’re not here to be critical of you but to help you strengthen your weakest vocal problems. It makes us very proud when we watch a student overcome a bad habit and progress to a higher level of knowledge. Notice I said progress to a higher level. You will never know all there is to know about singing so look for ways to improve your singing ability. As you grow in knowledge your confidence level will increase. I find that I learn from my students all the time. I even learn from the comments that people send me from this article. I look for ways to grow in knowledge so God can use me more. The more that I have to share with others the more God can use me.

Let’s all work hard to kick some bad habits this month. If you feel that working with a vocal instructor would help build your confidence and you are going to be in Nashville TN call me. I would love to be the one to help you grow. To order Entertainer’s Secret you can contact me at (615) 886-7082 or email me at getseminars@hotmail.com.

Until next time keep singing His Praises!

I have a quick question, if you don't mind. How does one cough on stage without being too distracting? We have to usually play it off as a "frog" if it's a whopper, and at least that's funny...sometimes.
I cannot afford vocal lessons, so I really appreciate your column.
Thanks,
Shawn

Shawn, coughing is something that we have to do sometimes and it is the way our body clears the lungs. The best way if you have to do it on stage is to cover your mouth and turn your head away from the audience and cough then turn around again and get ready to sing. If you are coughing alot you may need to see your doctor and find out why. You may need medication to stop the drainage or something to clear the lungs. Marti

Dear Marti,

The article on coughing caught my eye. Coughing can be a habit, as with my brothers, who sing as a trio. They never cough until time to sing. Then it is hack, cough and gag all the way to the platform. I have tried to encourage them to do all their coughing before they even come into the church but to no avail. It's part of getting ready to sing by clearing my throat routine. It is hopeless since they are in their late 70's and early 80's. Also, I saw a video of myself playing the keyboard as backup for some professional instrumentalist and was shocked, to say the least, at the expression on my face. The expression on my face did not depict the joy I was sensing in my spirit. Thanks Marti for your Articles. Dean

Dean, You are right coughing can be a nervous habit and nerves can cause drainage, too. Many times when people get nervous they feel like they have to do something to get ready. Some people feel like they can't sing without a cup of coffee or a peppermint, cough drop, or coughing. We can make ourselves believe that we have to have something before we can sing but a good vocal warm up is all that we need. Anything else we use can actually make it harder to sing. Nervousness can do all kinds of things to us. Good point, thanks. Marti
