Local Southern Indiana Artist Loses Family In Tragic Fire

SHOALS, Ind. - Solist Judith Montgomery and her husband Marold suffered a tragic loss Saturday March 11 when a house fire possibly sparked by a wood-burning stove killed a Marolds brother, Rodney Montgomery and his wife Beth along with Rodney and Beths 4 young children.

The couple and their children died early Saturday, shortly after they returned from a trip to Missouri, officials and relatives said.

The bodies of Rodney and Beth and their 6 month old baby Jackson were found near a side door on the first floor, said Indiana State Police First Sgt. Jeff Franklin. They appeared to have been overcome by smoke as they struggled to escape the house, located in a rural forested valley crisscrossed by streams and gravel roads in a rural area of southwestern Indiana.

The bodies of Austin, 11; Ariana, 9; & Trenton, 6; were found in a first-floor bedroom.

70 year old Stanley Montgomery, Marolds and Rodneys father said his son (Rodney) and his family had returned Friday night from a trip to Missouri and called to let him know they had made it home all right.

When he heard about the fire, he ran to his son's home nearby but found no one outside as it burned. He realized all six had perished when the garage walls collapsed and he saw the family's two cars still parked inside.

"When I knew they were in there, I knew there was no hope," Montgomery said.

The fire appears to have originated near a wood-burning stove, Franklin said. There was no sign of foul play. The fire was reported just before 4 a.m. Officials were still investigating Saturday. The home was about 90 miles southwest of Indianapolis.

Misty Freeman tapes Discovery Channel Special

image
Misty and her fiancé Bryce Callaway just wrapped up taping a special for the Discovery Channel. The Specials topic was on True Love Waits.

Misty and Bryce were chosen out of many couples for the show.

Misty states "Bryce and I didn't even put in for the show. A good friend of ours that we are in Bible study with works with Rebecca St. James and she was appearing on the show. So he was in contact with the producers and they had stated that they were just not finding the right couple for the interview. Everyone that they had interviewed had only maybe been dating a few months or were married. They were looking for a couple that knew each other well but were still in the waiting stage. So our friend thought of us right away."

The Discovery channel came and spent two days with Misty and Bryce following them around in their everyday life and asking very detailed questions about their relationship.

Bryce stated "It was encouraging to get to talk to millions of people about abstaining from sex in our relationship. It was good to hear from the guys from The Discovery Channel that they thought it was cool that Misty and I were able to talk about our relationship so openly. Misty and I have a great time hanging out with the guys and getting to know them. It was also very exciting watching them set up to film us and how that all worked."

Misty said "We were really excited about sharing about our relationship and how we came to making this choice. We were able to share with them how our love for the Lord is what is most important to us and how we strive to live our lives in a way that is pleasing to Him. Our prayer before we taped was that the Lord would use us to be a witness to everyone watching and working on this show. That they would see us as real people who deal with real life just like everyone else but because of our personal relationship with Christ we have His Grace to live out our Love for Him in obeying His Word."

This program is to air in February. Check your local listings. To keep up with Misty and her upcoming new cd release go to http://www.MistyFreeman.com Misty and Bryce Callaway will be married on May 13th 2006 in Nashville, TN
