image
Hendersonville, Tenn. (April 28, 2008) - Daywind recording artist, Austins Bridge took home their first Dove Award for Bluegrass Recorded Song Of The Year, “He’s In Control,” at the 39th Annual Gospel Music Association’s Dove Awards last Wednesday night. The show, held at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, was broadcast live nationwide on the Gospel Music Channel television network and XM Satellite Radio.

The song, from their self-titled debut album, Austins Bridge, was co-written by group members Justin Rivers and Mike Kofahl, along with Daywind veteran songwriter, John Darin Rowsey. This is the first Dove for all three of the writers.

John Darin Rowsey was there to accept the award and he had this to say of his experience as a Dove recipient. “I cannot describe how shocked I was that our song was even nominated in a category with such incredible legends of Bluegrass music. When we won, I was truly at a loss for words. I thanked God while walking to the podium, and the rest was a blur. What a true honor and an amazing night.”

Austins Bridge burst on to the Christian music scene less than two years ago, and in that short amount of time, they have seen successes that some wait a lifetime to experience. They have appeared on major events nationwide including Winterfest, the Franklin Graham Crusade, Gaitherfest, and more.

Mark Lowry Takes Home Dove Award For Inspirational Album of the Year

image
(NASHVILLE, TN) -- Funnyman, Mark Lowry took home a Dove Award last night for his latest recording, I Love To Tell The Story-A Hymns Collection (Spring House/Gaither Gospel Series), which was named Inspirational Album of the Year. Lowry also joined Sandy Patti on stage to present the final award of the night, Artist of the Year, to TobyMac. The 39th Annual GMA Dove Awards aired live from the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville on the Gospel Music Channel.

"Winning this particular Dove Award was a great honor because it was an all-singing project," said Lowry. "I've won a Dove for comedy but never for singing. So this is quite a treat. But the credit must go to Paul Johnson. He did such a great job arranging and leading the orchestra and co-producing I Love To Tell The Story-A Hymns Collection. It couldn't have been made without him."

It was in 1988 that Bill Gaither invited Lowry to sing baritone in the Gaither Vocal Band--a position he held for 13 years--and this dynamic relationship with Gaither made Lowry an overnight sensation throughout the Christian music world and far beyond. He continues to appear in the Gaither Homecoming videos and he often shows up as a surprise guest in Gaither's live Homecoming concerts. Currently, and regularly, Lowry co-hosts Bill Gaither's Homecoming Radio show on the Salem Music Network.

Mark Lowry has enjoyed a multi-layered career filled with sold-out concert tours and gold and platinum-selling albums and videos. His lyrics include the phenomenal Christmas classic, "Mary Did You Know?" -- recorded by Michael English, Wynonna, Kenny Rogers, Clay Aiken, Reba McEntire, Natalie Cole, Brian Littrell, Donny Osmond and over 50 other international artists. Of Lowry's many best-selling videos, Mark Lowry on Broadway sat at #1 on the Billboard Video Chart for 5 weeks, besting releases from Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, 'NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys. Mark Lowry Goes to Hollywood was soon to follow and remains one of Lowry's favorites. His Mouth In Motion video won a Dove Award for Long Form Music Video of the Year in 1995. In 2005 he was nominated in the Southern Gospel Album of the Year category for Some Things Never Change. Through the years he has also received multiple Grammy and Dove Awards from a cornucopia of Gaither-related recordings and videos that he has been featured in.

Award-winning producer/arranger/composer/conductor Paul Johnson served as musical director for the Dove Awards in the late 70's / early 80's. His previous producing credits include projects from Debby Boone, Pat Boone, Rick Dees and Andrae Crouch, and he has arranged and conducted for over 100 international performing artists including Whitney Houston, Frank Sinatra, Al Jarreau, Michael Bolton, The Four Tops, Donna Summer, Michael McDonald, Andy Williams, Petula Clark, Janet Jackson, The Temptations, Kim Carnes, Robert Goulet, Randy Travis and the original movie casts of Bye Bye Birdie, Oliver, and Flower Drum Song.

image
Luke & Olivia White, a brother/sister duo, based out of Kernersville, NC has announced major plans for the summer of 2008.

"We are really thrilled to announce the addition of some very special people to our ministry. Nineteen year old Cameron Moose comes to us from Marion, NC and he will be joining us on stage as our drummer. He is a senior this year and will be graduating within the next few weeks. "Moose" as we like to call him, will definently be a fan favorite among the people we sing to. He is very personable and LOVES to talk. He's already made so many friends in the past few weeks. This young man walks and talks the life of a true Christian, and we are blessed to have him a part of our team." Says Luke.

"Its appropriate that Luke let me introduce this next fella to you, because he is my Fiancee'. Josh Jarrel is 22 years old, and makes his home in Rural Hall, NC. We have basically grown up with Josh. Our parents use to travel and sing together when we were just little kids and it's amazing the plan God had for our lives even back then. Im so happy that He will be taking part in this ministry with me, it means alot to have the support of your loved ones as you go and do what the Lord has called you to do. He has played the drums since we have known each other, but about a year ago he picked up the Bass, and is just doing an excellant job on it and so he will be standing along side of us on stage this summer, as our bass player. Im so glad the Lord placed us in ministry together to work for HIS glory." Says, Olivia.

"Our parents are also involved in our minstry. Our Mom, Rhonda, handles the finances for the group and also sings backup with us on a few songs, and she is also featured on a song during our program. Our Dad, Phillip, sits in the background and cheers us on every night that we are on stage ministering. He gets us where we need to go and helps carry in the sound system. We could not do what we do without the support of our parents. By the way, You may even get to hear Dad sing a song. Come out and see us and request that daddy sing for ya, He can't say no in Church..HaHa!" says Luke

Luke and Olivia White just released their first national release to radio, with the Rick Hendrix Company, based out of Nashville, TN. Their current single is called, "Pictures of Me". Call your local station today and request this song.

Dignity Hospice hosts Southern Gospel Talent Search Saturday

LOGAN, WV – It's being called the hottest ticket in West Virginia for this weekend. It's a Southern Gospel music event that may seem similar to American Idol. The Coalfield Jamboree, a renovated MGM theatre located in the City of Logan, will be the site of the third annual Dignity Hospice Southern Gospel Music Talent Search.

Dignity Hospice, headquartered in Chapmanville, WV, will again host the annual gala and fundraiser that always attracts top-notch talent from across the nation. This year's show will feature a record 30 Gospel music contestants; the event is being held this Saturday, Apr. 26th, beginning at 7:00 p.m. According to Mike Collins, public relations coordinator for Dignity and emcee for the Saturday night event, the overall winner of the talent search will sign a Nashville Recording contract with the prestigious Eddie Crook Company at the end of the evening.

"Yet, I must say that it is our opinion that all the competitors are already winners," he said. "Each year we find ourselves amazed at the caliber of the talent and depth of commitment from these artists who participate in the talent show. Of course it is an exciting competition; but, perhaps most importantly, these artists are here for the right reasons: to sing God's praises and raise much-needed funding for patients of Dignity Hospice."

The decision of Dean Wilcox, senior vice president of the Eddie Crook Company, along with the audience’s participation, will decide the overall winner of the contest. The Eddie Crook Company, well-known in Gospel music circles, has launched the careers of many of the most popular Southern Gospel artists touring today. Wilcox, playing a role similar to that of Simon Cowell, will be on hand to gage and critique each performance. Judging criteria will including stage presence and vocal ability.

Collins stated that there will be soloists, trios, quartets and mixed groups performing live. "Not only will the audience be thoroughly blessed by an evening of exciting and inspiring music," he added, "but they will also know that they are making a direct, immediate difference in the lives of local hospice patients who most need medical care and our supportive services."

Collins said that because of the out-flowing of love and support from the community at events like this, no Dignity Hospice patient has ever been turned away due to a lack of money or health insurance.

Aracoma Drug, Steve Nichols Insurance, Woodland Press and Hurley Drug are corporate sponsors for this year's musical event. Call 304-831-4102, or visit http://www.DignityHospice.org, to find more information about the event. Dignity Hospice is a non-profit organization that serves patients and families in Logan, Mingo, Boone, Lincoln and Wyoming Counties, in the Mountain State. Dignity Hospice is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Providence Road Debuts Self-Titled CD

image
(NASHVILLE, TN) – Southern gospel trio Providence Road announces the release of their self-titled debut CD! After the trio’s formation last year, group members Laura Sue Brod, Christy Grant, and Lindsay Huggins are excited to deliver their first studio project to listeners. With a mix of traditional and progressive southern gospel, as well as two a capella selections, this CD has something for everyone. Group founder Laura Sue Brod, granddaughter of gospel songwriter Mosie Lister, states: “It is truly a passion of ours to see Southern Gospel embraced by our generation, so that the powerful message in the lyrics will continue to reach multiple generations. We’ve chosen several of Grandaddy’s songs for this album, and it's been so much fun reviving some of those classic tunes! We’re also excited to be introducing some of his new material.” The eleven song project also features the songwriting talents of Barbara Lister Williams.

Providence Road was formed in 2007, and though the group name may be new to the Southern Gospel industry, these young women are well seasoned as individual vocalists and ministers of the gospel. It is truly the Lord’s leading that brought them together. “Having Southern Gospel as such a large part of my heritage and being called into music ministry, I knew that one day I wanted to have a Southern Gospel trio,” says Brod. “Christy Grant and Lindsay Huggins bring so much to this group. The fact that they are cousins brings a tight family sound to the group that I love. Most importantly, they share my passion for this genre, for reaching lost souls for Christ, and seeing the church grow into a deeper relationship with Him. After just one year of Providence Road's formation, I'm thrilled as I look forward to the many days of ministry with these girls!”

With the release of their debut project, Providence Road anticipates a bright future ahead as they embrace each opportunity to share the Good News in song. Patty was a member of the Gaither tour in the past and a popular guest on Gaither Homecoming videos. Harris was a member of Gaither’s Grammy Award-winning, Gaither Vocal Band and also guests on Homecoming videos.

Bill and Gloria Gaither are most well-known for their significant contributions to the Christian music industry over the past four decades. Their early success in performing and songwriting has grown the Gaither Music Company into an Indiana business that comprises a record company, production studio, retail store and a variety of related entities. Despite careers that have taken them throughout the world with their ministry, the Gaithers have continued to call Indiana home, living and raising three children just miles from the farm where Bill grew up.

“Governor Daniels said we had chosen to stay in Indiana and take our advice from our fellow Hoosiers. That is really true, and I don't think there is any more trustworthy advice, or opinions, or influences than the influences and advice and opinions of those who know you best on your block,” said Gloria.

“Indiana is really a nurturing state, and I hope that will always be the case,” said Bill.

Born and raised near Alexandria, Bill Gaither began his music career while pursuing a degree in teaching at Anderson University. He was still a teenager when he formed the Bill Gaither Trio with his brother, Danny, and his sister, Mary Ann. After graduating from college in 1959, Bill worked as an English teacher at the local high school in Alexandria and married fellow Anderson alumna Gloria Sickal three years later. The Gaithers began writing songs together in the evening while Bill continued teaching as his primary job. Gloria later replaced Mary Ann in the Bill Gaither Trio, and in 1967, Bill left his teaching position so that they could pursue full time careers in the Christian music industry.

The Bill Gaither Trio went on to begin a new era in the gospel music industry, selling out arenas and earning the respect of audiences and industry peers for decades. Their timeless songs would win worldwide recognition, many of which are now considered classics, which have been recorded by countless artists over the years from Elvis Presley to Sandi Patty. In the 1980s, the Gaither Trio evolved into a four-part male group known as the Gaither Vocal Band, which forever raised the bar for gospel groups everywhere and remains the premiere four-part group in gospel music today.

At this date the Gaithers have collaborated on more than 700 popular gospel songs, winning eight Grammy Awards and more than two dozen Dove Awards from The Gospel Music Association (GMA). They have earned the title of the GMA’s “Songwriter of the Year” eight times. In 2000, Bill and Gloria were named “Songwriters of the Century” by ASCAP (American Society of Composers Authors, Publishers).

In 1996, Bill and Gloria Gaither were the first musical artists to be inducted into the Christian Booksellers Association’s Hall of Honor, joining only three others who have previously been honored with this distinction: Reverend Billy Graham, Dr. Kenneth Taylor (author of The Living Bible) and Dr. Richard Halverson (former U.S. Senate Chaplain). The Indianapolis Star named “He Touched Me” among the top 10 songs of the 20th century written by a Hoosier.

The Gaithers have never lost touch with their alma mater. Bill has served on Anderson University’s board of trustees for 28 years. Gloria has taught songwriting classes at the university and served on the National Board of Directors for the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities. They both received honorary doctorates— Bill an honorary doctor of music and Gloria an honorary doctor of humane letters.

Sachem (Say-chum) background:
In 1970, Governor Edgar D. Whitcomb introduced the “Confederacy of the Sachem,” a group of business, industry, publishing, banking and legal leaders, who served as state hosts, welcoming visitors to Indiana and promoting the state’s culture and economy. The organization’s name came from the Algonquin term applied to village leaders, implying wisdom, judgment and grace.

At the time, Sachems constituted an honor greater than being named a Sagamore of the Wabash. Bylaws outlined that Sachems were to nominate and recommend Sagamore appointments to the governor. The Sagamore of the Wabash dates to the term of Indiana Governor Ralph Gates in 1945 and has been the state’s highest honor bestowed by the governor.

Following Whitcomb’s term, the Sachem project was not pursued, and the organization dissolved in 1989. Whitcomb visited Daniels in 2005 to acquaint him with the concept and to give him custody of remaining Sachem funds. Governor Daniels recreated the Sachem to underscore the importance of moral example; achievement alone without exemplary virtue does not qualify a person for this recognition.

Each Sachem honoree receives a specially-designed sculpture that captures the Native American heritage of the Sachem. All Sachem recipients will be selected by Indiana’s governor.
