Singing News Makes Charting Changes

According to a report by Chuck Peters of The Southern Gospel Reporter, The Singing News magazine is cutting back its list of reporting stations to only 75. Kenneth Kirksey told dozens of radio stations in a letter dated Oct 26 that they were "..not chosen to be a Singing News reporting station at this time." Kirksey went on to say: "This is not a reflection on your station’s quality or commitment to Southern Gospel music. We simply had more qualified stations that we had slots to fill."

Kirksey indicated that the decision was based on suggestions from various Southern Gospel industry suggestions. In addition to dropping dozens of stations a Singing News Chart Advisory Committee has been formed with the following members:

Ed Leonard - Daywind Records
Chris White - Crossroads Music
Jim Stover - Crossroads Music
Jan Puryear - Eddie Crook Company
Dave Wilcox - Eddie Crook Company
Susan Whisnant - United Independent Artists/WCIS Radio
Rhonda Thompson - Rhonda Thompson Promotions
Jeff O’Neal - Heritage Communications
Kim Hudgins - Father’s House Music
Kenneth Kirksey - Singing News
Les Butler - Singing News

Peters stated, "I applaud the Singing News for its efforts to improve the charting system. However.. I see a serious flaw in the first step. Why are 9 of the 11 committe members.. record promoters? This seems to me to be a conflict of interest. Where are the radio people?"

In addition Peters addressed radio stations with the following advice, "If your station was cut from SN charting status.. don't sweat it. Just keep programming smart and playing only top quality SG music. If artists and record promoters are smart.. they will continue to supply your station with new music. I really believe that "airplay" sells CDs.. not chart positions."

Kirksey stated that they would limit reporting stations to 75 and a limit of two to six reporting stations per state and that, "The committee also decided to start building a reporting station list from scratch."

The Singing News Chart Advisory Committee plans to meet at least once per year to decide if changes, to the charting stations list, are needed.

Jerry Garcia Diagnosed with Cancer, Prognosis Is Positive

image
ADRIAN, Michigan - Southern Gospel Solo Artist Jerry Garcia of Adrian, Michigan was recently diagnosed with Stage 2 Squamous Cell Carcinoma, (mouth cancer). Jerry was immediately scheduled for surgery last week to remove the cancerous tumor. Early prognosis from the surgical team that the procedure was successful is encouraging. Sarah Garcia, Jerry's wife, reports, "The surgeon said the tumor practically fell out on it's own. It was well contained and defined and preliminary test's showed that it did not try to advance. That was good news”. However, more tests are needed to verify the cancer has been completely removed. Jerry is in good spirits and is recovering at home. Jerry states, "I am at peace knowing that many of my friends, church family, and fellow SG artist’s are praying for me. My surgery went well which tells me God has shown His favor upon my situation. To God be the glorye glorified through this trial and I will be strengthened”.

The family asks that everyone would continue to pray for a speedy recovery so that Jerry can return to singing again soon. Also, Jerry is without health insurance and the medical bills are going to be quite extensive. Please pray that God would supply the resources so this will not become a burden on the family. KENNY BISHOP LAUNCHES NEW AUDIO PODCAST

LEXINGTON, KY - Christian recording artist Kenny Bishop has taken his work a step further with the launch of his new audio podcast. The weekly program will feature short but poignant thoughts on what Kenny calls, "the things that make a difference in the world."

"I'm a writer and a journaler," Bishop said. "I'm constantly jotting down thoughts about anything that comes to mind. Sometimes I use lots of paper to rant to myself, to get things off my chest. Other times the thoughts are deeper, sometimes controversial, but most always enlightening."

The Kenny Bishop Audio Podcast is available directly by logging onto http://kenebishop.libsyn.com/. After hearing Kenny's thoughts, listeners can post comments, or their own thoughts on what they hear. The podcasts can also be accessed through iTunes at http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=266100999 . iTunes members can subscribe to the podcast to receive the regular weekly programs. You can also access the podcast at http://www.kennybishop.com .

"Most of us are settled in our view of the Scriptures, but I hope to expose all of us to the Bible's view of us. I don't intend to spread ideas that are unbiblical or heretical, but I'm really convinced there are things yet to be discovered we can explore," Bishop said.

Bishop says he also plans to use the podcast to challenge Christians who've taken a hands-off approach to social and environmental issues. "As Believers, we have the opportunity to add our voices to the discussion on not only the obvious things like faith and Scripture, but other things that should matter to us like politics, relationships, world hunger and the environment. I'm hoping I can expose Believers to take note of the Bible's mandate to be even more than soul winners."

Bishop says most of the script for his audio podcast will be taken from his regular journal and devotional writings on his web site, http://www.kennybishop.com .

Broadway Legend Carol Channing Records Song for All-Star Dottie Rambo Tribute Project

image
Nashville, TN--Tony-award-winning actress Carol Channing has recorded the song "One More Valley" for an upcoming tribute album to Gospel Music Legend Dottie Rambo.
The album, scheduled for release in 2008, will feature artists from various genres of music performing classic songs from Rambo's vast repertoire. Channing's "One More Valley" was recorded in her hometown of Modesto, California earlier this month with arranger John Wyatt.

"I can't tell you how excited I was that Carol Channing recorded "One More Valley," I couldn't stop playing it over and over," says Rambo. "Each time I play it, I'm like a little girl at Christmas who just got her first doll."

"I'm still in awe!" says the album's supervising producer Larry Ferguson, "I can't even express to you how honored I am to work on a project with the first lady of musical comedy. The track is amazing, it's sort of a fusion Dixieland, Traditional Gospel, and New Orleans music mixed with a lot of Carol Channing. I have always loved her voice and her ability to tell a story with her trademark vocal. Carol even added a cute message for Dottie at the end of the track."

"Listening to Carol Channing's rendition of 'One More Valley' is like riding on a musical rollercoster, there's a surprise around every corner," says Wyatt.

Channing, a multiple Tony-award-winner, is also an accomplished vocalist with over 10 gold albums to her credit. She is the recipient of Harvard University's "Hasty Pudding Woman Of The Year" award and is best known for her performances in Hello Dolly and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Channing won a Golden Globe, and was nominated nominated for an Oscar for her role in Thoroughly Modern Millie. She is currently lending her talents to raising money for resurrecting the arts into public schools.

Rambo, writer of over 2500 songs, is one of the most recognized and successful writers in Gospel music. Rambo won a Grammy award in 1968 for her album It's The Soul of Me. She has been inducted twice into the Gospel Music Hall Of Fame and is also a member of the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame and Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Rambo's songs have been recorded by a "who's who" of American music, including Elvis Presley, Whitney Houston, Dolly Parton, and Jerry Lee Lewis.
