Hoppers recognized by community at 49th Anniversary Celebration

EDEN, NC – It’s been said there’s no place like home, and this is certainly true for America’s Favorite Family of Gospel Music. On Saturday, Nov. 25th, the Hoppers’ Annual Anniversary Celebration, celebrating 49 years of Christ-centered ministry, took place at Morehead Auditorium, in Eden, NC.

The Hoppers—Dean, Kim, Mike, Connie, and group founder and manager Claude Hopper—were joined by several special guests, including award-winning Southern Gospel trio, Greater Vision, saxophonist Dennis Sparks, speaker Walt Gretzky, father of NHL legend Wayne Gretzky, and noted humorist Wayne Hopper, brother of Claude Hopper.

The highlight of the exciting evening was when the original Hopper Brothers and Connie united on stage; brothers Steve, Will, Monroe, and Claude joined Connie, singing many of the inspiring songs from their beginnings in 1956. The musical veterans also debuted several new songs from an upcoming 50th anniversary commemorative album project. Several of the tunes featured Connie, including the first song she ever wrote and sang when she became a part of the group in 1957.

For an instant, time seemed to come to a standstill as the Hopper family’s tight harmonies thrilled and encouraged over 1600 in attendance. Topping off the evening, the Hoppers were honored with the presentation of a special proclamation from the Rockingham County, NC, Board of Commissioners, in recognition of their roots and their accomplishments over nearly a half-century of music ministry. The declaration was read publicly by Commissioner David Isley, who summed up the presentation with: “Now, therefore, be it proclaimed by the Rockingham County Board of Commissioners, that the Hoppers be honored as they continue their legacy of Gospel music and begin the 50th Year Celebration of their ministry and service to the citizens of their home, Rockingham County, the state of North Carolina, the United States and across the globe.”

“Sometimes it seems the Hoppers are foreigners in their own community, due to the fact that they are away from home, touring, over 200 days a year,” said Dennis Sparks, booking manager for the legendary group, as well as performer. “The entire family, including the original Hopper brothers, was moved to tears by the county proclamation. They have often been recognized by the Gospel music industry, and have received many accolades, proclamations and recognitions across the nation and around the world. However, this was different: in many ways, this meant so much more to them because Rockingham County will always be home.”

“This was one of the greatest highlights of our career,” Claude said. “We are all so honored; it means more than we can express. We are so proud to be from Rockingham County, North Carolina. For nearly fifty years, we have attempted to uphold and faithfully represent our hometown throughout our many travels, while our primary focus has been to take the glorious Gospel message to the world, in song. What a privilege to do so. It’s Rockingham County people that initially supported and encouraged us, and have continued to do so. We are so grateful.”

Toward the close of the emotionally charged evening, as the stage lights faded, the Hopper family and their special guests took the time to mingle among the audience to personally thank everyone for their continued support and friendship. This time of fellowship quickly became a reunion of friends, neighbors, and family that was moving for everyone who participated.

For the next twelve months, as the Hoppers celebrate the countdown to their 50th anniversary, the original Hopper Brothers and Connie will perform for select dates, as the Hopper family continues to crisscross the nation with the 2007 Hopper Heritage Tour.

In another upcoming hometown recognition, the original Hopper Brothers & Connie have been chosen to be the grand marshals of the Annual Madison-Mayodan Jaycees’ Christmas Parade, on Dec. 16th, at 1 p.m. The event will begin on Main Street in Mayodan, and will end on Murphy Street in Madison.

image
Nashville, TN - Multi-talented Christian recording artist, The Pfeifers were recently featured at the LifeWay Christian Stores employee chapel service at the LifeWay headquarters in Nashville, TN. The Pfeifers delighted the LifeWay employees in attendance with their moving musical presentation. “I produce almost 90 events a year at LifeWay’s corporate headquarters,” states LifeWay Corporate Events Specialist David Hassell, “and 50 of them are employee chapel services. I’ve hosted a ‘who’s who’ of A-list Christian artists and authors. I must say how amazed I was at the move of the Holy Spirit when The Pfeifers performed in our employee chapel. From the first notes of the first song, it was apparent that this was not going to be our usual chapel service. Our employees were led in such a wonderful worship experience that day! They showed us Jesus through their music, the teaching of God’s Word and their warm demeanor. I can’t wait to bring them back to LifeWay!”

“It was such a wonderful experience for us,” states this year’s Singing News Fan Award Favorite Musician recipient, John Pfeifer, one of the three long-time members of The Pfeifers. “We certainly hope to have the opportunity again.”

Gene and Martha Warren Day Proclamation By St. Louis City Mayor

(Press Release) – Farmington, MO

The Mid-America Gospel Music Association was well represented recently when the Honorable Francis Slay, Mayor of the City of St. Louis, recognized two of MAGMA’s finest, Gene and Martha Warren, for 40 years of Southern Gospel Music ministry.

Mayor Slay issued an official proclamation designating November 4 as Gene and Martha Warren Day in the City of St. Louis. The Warrens and their group, The Glorylanders, have traveled extensively over the last 40 years taking the Gospel message all over the country.

The mayor’s proclamation was the first proclamation of any kind since the Cardinals claimed the World Series championship.

St. Louis and indeed the Southern Gospel Music community are justly proud. MAGMA’s President, Randy Barron, commented, “Gene and Martha Warren have not only served as a cornerstone in Gospel Music, but have inspired many groups in the Midwestern area. Mid-America Gospel Music Association is very proud to have Gene Warren and The Glorylanders as part of this association. To this day they are still inspiring peers and blessing fans throughout this area.”

MAGMA vice president, Gary O'Neal, was present during the presentation from the mayor of St. Louis. "It was a great honor to participate in the celebration of 40 years of faithful service in the Gospel Music field. I can't think of two more deserving people than Gene and Martha Warren to receive this honor."

Geron Davis Produces Nixa Assembly of God Choir CD

image
Geron Davis is among the greatest producers in the Christian music scene, Jeff Smith, executive associate pastor at Nixa First Assembly of God says. And like a match made in heaven, Davis, a Nashville icon, has produced the church’s first CD, which will be unveiled during a concert at the First Assembly of God church at 6 p.m. Nov. 12.

“His most famous song is ‘We’re Standing on Holy Ground’ which he wrote when he was 19 years old and was sung by Barbra Streisand at Bill Clinton’s second inauguration,” Smith says. “He’s been here several times and he’s very popular in the Christian music realm.”

Smith said Davis has started a new project, selecting a few choirs from across the nation to record albums. Davis has written the majority of the music and compiled the instrumentals, but the rest, including vocal talents, is up to the church.

“We’re the first he’s done this with,” Smith says. “Everything vocally is our choir—our own soloists, our own people. We feel like we’ve got something we want to share with people.”

CDs will soon be available across the nation at the Nov. 12 concert. Smith also urges people to grab their seats early because seating is limited.

Finding The Offbeat Side

image
When producers of the HGTV series “Offbeat America” began looking for something to feature in an episode of its series that airs Sundays at 6 p.m., they didn’t have to look much farther than “Doc” Tommy Scott’s Last Real Old Time Medicine Show and his Asian-styled home nestled in the North Georgia hills near Toccoa.

"Working with these nice folks was a wonderful experience," Scott said. "We taped for several hours and the time just flew by. They really impressed me with their insightful approach of getting all the shots they needed to make an interesting feature for the show."

Scott is no stranger to television, the TV pioneer starred in two of his own series, the first "The Ramblin' Tommy Scott Show" which began airing nationwide in 1948 and the second Tommy Scott's "Smokey Mountain Jamboree” which aired in syndication throughout the early 1950s. He has also starred in western films and appeared on network shows with Johnny Carson, David Letterman, Oprah Winfrey and countless other TV legends.

The High Noon Entertainment crew with members from Centennial, Colorado, Nashville, Tenn. and Georgia also featured Georgia's Appalachian Ambassador of the Fiddle Randall Franks, "Officer Randy" from TV's "In the Heat of the Night," sharing his upbeat musical stylings for the show.

“When the casting people asked me to join my dear friend “Doc” Tommy Scott, I just could not pass up the op-portunity,” Franks said. “His has one of the most unique houses in the state and there is no better known showman from Georgia.”

Franks opened the musical segment for the show with a break neck speed fiddle tune introducing the Medicine Show now in its 116th year of operation which also included performances by Scott and his great grandsons Corey and Craig Lawson, the fourth generation to appear with his show. The teenage duo performed a 21st century version of Scott's 1940s classic "The Alley Cat Blues."

While on location in June, the crew also interviewed Scott as he gave a tour of the unusual and unique Asian-styled home he and his late wife and co-star Frankie Scott built in Eastanollee, Ga.

Franks also gave an interview sharing his impressions of the house he first visited 13 years ago when he visited Stephens County as a spokesperson for D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education).

The “Offbeat America” crew included Patrick Clark, host; John Pauly, producer; John Mans, photographer; Carrie Gallagher, audio; and Cynthia Webster, stylist. The program entitled “Fraggle Rock House and More” aired Nov. 12 on HGTV and will re-air. Check HGTV.com for future airdates in 2007.

Dove Brothers Mentioned on Letterman Show

image
Bladenboro, NC - The Dove Brothers Quartet "appeared" on a recent airing of the Late Show with David Letterman on CBS television. In a segment of the program devoted to Small Town News, a promotional poster of the group was shown. In typical David Letterman style, of course, the joke was presented as to how it is that FIVE people make up a quartet.

"I guess there's no such thing as bad publicity," McCray Dove stated with a chuckle. "This does, however, present a way to help spread the news about Southern Gospel music to a broader audience. Wouldn't it be great if folks from across the country logged on to the CBS.com website and let them know they want to see Southern Gospel really featured? What better place is there for a song like "Get Away Jordan" to be performed?"

The Dove Brothers have recently released two new projects and will be kicking off their "I Can Pray" tour in 2007. For more information about the tour and the Dove Brothers, please visit http://www.dovebrothersquartet.com.

Artists Join Together For Benefit Needy Children

image
ROCK HILL, SC – It's an exciting night of pure Southern Gospel music. Many of the top Gospel music artists in the nation have announced their participation in a giant benefit concert called A Mission of Mercy. The unique musical event will be held on Friday, Nov. 24th at 7:00 p.m., at the West End Baptist Church, on the corner of Meadow Lakes and McConnells Highway.

The show will profit the Shriner’s Hospitals and assist children with orthopedic needs, and those with severe burns. And, of course, this night of rousing music will inspire those who come to enjoy a night of music and fellowship.

Those artists currently scheduled to perform will include the Hoppers, Primitive Quartet, the Greenes, the Freemans and Mark Bishop.

“We are honored to be a part of this important charity concert,” said Dean Hopper, of the Hoppers. “We are also excited about seeing friends in South Carolina. It will be a great night for our family in Rock Hill.” The Hoppers will also be celebrating the release of their new album, The Ride, and their new biography entitled, After All These Years.

"We currently have 22 hospitals across the country that have served approximately 800,000 children at no cost to family, insurance or government agency," said Ronny Bazemore, spokesperson for the Shriners. "However, it takes 1.8-million dollars a day to operate these hospitals. We implement an assortment of fundraising activities throughout the year, such as this special Mission of Mercy Southern Gospel concert. We invite everyone to get involved and enjoy this great night of inspiring Gospel music, all for a good cause."

Tony Greene, manager of the Greenes, said, "These Shriner Hospitals have everything any other hospital has, with the exception of a billing department. They offer the best of care for children from birth to 18 years of age at absolutely no charge. We look forward to joining our Southern Gospel friends to lend a hand to the children at Shriner’s Hospitals." The Greenes plan to sing many of their biggest hits, including the popular “Sky Full of Angels” and the current number three song in the nation, “Yes, Oh Yes.”

Advance general admission will be $18.00, and children 13 and under are free of charge. For more information, or to charge by telephone, call 828-773-5997. All ticket proceeds will go toward the Shriner’s Hospitals.

Dixie Melody Boys Put Finishing Touches On New Recordings

image
Fayetteville, NC - Southern Gospel Music Association Hall of Fame member, Ed O’Neal and his talented Dixie Melody Boys have been in the recording studio in recent weeks, working on vocals for not one, but three, new recordings. The popular quartet plans to have all three new projects available shortly after the first of the new year. “I’ve been wanting to do this for 40 years,” states veteran Dixie Melody Boys’ leader, Ed O’Neal. “Two of the recordings contain classic quartet songs, and one recording is all hymns. Two of the projects have just the four-part harmony with the piano and bass guitar accompaniment, but the hymns recording has the four vocals with a piano only, just like we used to sing them in church. I think the folks who love traditional, quartet singing will really enjoy these recordings.”

All three recordings are being produced by talented producer/vocalist/musican Wesley Pritchard, who admits that he’s never heard The Dixie Melody Boys sound any better. “This is the best quartet Ed O’Neal has ever had, and that’s a major statement,” Pritchard states. “Some of the finest singers in Gospel Music have, at one time or another, been a part of The Dixie Melody Boys. I’m talking about guys like Rodney Griffin, Devin McGlamery, Harold Reed, McCray Dove and Ernie Haase. He’s had some fantastic singers, and has always had a good quartet, but this group is the best combination he’s ever had.”

The current group of young men joining O’Neal, which Pritchard is referring to, includes tenor Dan Keeton, baritone Andrew King and the newest member of the quartet, lead vocalist Bryan Walker. Although Walker has only been a member of the group for a brief period of time, he has close ties to the quartet. Walker’s dad, David, traveled with The Dixie Melody Boys in the mid-1980s, and later with The Anchormen and The Kingdom Heirs.

According to O’Neal, Dixie Melody Boys’ fans can look for these three new releases in January, just in time for the group’s annual trip to the West Coast. Visit http://www.dixiemelodyboys.com to view the group’s touring schedule and to pre-order your copies of the Dixie Melody Boys at their finest.

Gospel Music Hall of Fame to Induct New Members

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – September 20, 2006 -- The GMA Foundation (GMAF) will induct artists Richard Smallwood, Doug Oldham, The Hinsons and former music executive John T. Benson III, announced John W. Styll, president of the GMAF.

"Each new inductee to the GMA Gospel Music Hall of Fame represents a vital part of the history and legacy of gospel music. We honor them as a way to ensure their contributions are never forgotten and to remind us always of the rich heritage and beautiful diversity that is unique to gospel music,” said Styll.

The GMA Gospel Music Hall of Fame induction reception and ceremony will be held at the Richland Country Club in Nashville on Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m.

The GMA Gospel Music Hall of Fame was established in 1971 and has inducted more than 140 members since its inception, including Elvis Presley, Mahalia Jackson, Amy Grant, the Blind Boys of Alabama, Andrae Crouch, Tennessee Ernie Ford, The Oak Ridge Boys, Petra, Bill and Gloria Gaither, the Rambos, Thomas A. Dorsey, the Fairfield Four, Billy Graham and the Jordanaires. Last year, Walter Hawkins, Mylon LeFevre, Evie, The Lewis Family were among the inductees.

World-class composer, pianist and arranger, Richard Smallwood has clearly and solidly changed the face of black gospel music. His impeccable blend of classical movements with traditional gospel has earned Smallwood many honors in his 20-plus year career including multiple Dove Awards, Stellar Awards and a GRAMMY. Smallwood's first album, The Richard Smallwood Singers, debuted in 1982 and spent 87 weeks on Billboard's Gospel chart. He recorded eight albums with the Richard Smallwood Singers and appeared on many other artists' projects. His song, “I, Love The Lord” crossed onto the big screen when Whitney Houston sang it in the film, "The Preacher's Wife” and his music has also been recorded by artists such as Destiny's Child, Yolanda Adams and Karen Clark-Sheard. Smallwood, with his current group Vision, an ensemble of multitalented ministers of music, has recorded four projects for Verity records, Adoration, Rejoice, Healing...Live in Detroit, and Persuaded-Live in DC. Richard Smallwood has been honored by the Smithsonian Institution as a “gospel innovator and songwriter.” His hometown, Washington, D.C., has heralded Smallwood on two separate occasions with “Richard Smallwood Day,” and distinguished him with the Mayoral Art Award for “precision and excellence in artistic discipline.”

For nearly 50 years, Inspirational artist Doug Oldham has blessed the hearts of hundreds of thousands of people, both in his concerts and through television. He has ministered in the United States, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and throughout the world. Oldham first began singing in the early 1960s at tent revival meetings where his father was the evangelist. He soon met a high school teacher who was also a novice songwriter and pianist named Bill Gaither. They began traveling together on the weekends with Oldham singing the new songs written by Gaither. Among the thousands of songs that Oldham has sung, he was the very first person to sing and record Gaither’s infamous “He Touched Me,” a song which was recorded famously by fellow Hall of Famer Elvis Presley. The Dove Award-winning artist has recorded more than 65 albums and performed for national and international dignitaries including former presidents Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, George Bush, as well as Prince Phillip and the Queen of England. Oldham has written two books, one with his wife of 54 years, Laura Lee. They have three daughters, five grandchildren and one great grandchild. Oldham and his family live in Lynchburg, Va.

1970s’ Southern gospel favourites The Hinsons started in 1967 when the three brothers, Ronny, Kenny and Larry and sister Yvonne began the group in central California, singing at the church where their father served as minister. In 1971 The Hinsons opened for The Happy Goodman Family, introducing a song "The Lighthouse,” written by Ronny, that soon became the Hinson’s signature song. “The Lighthouse” was also recorded by many other artists, including The Happy Goodman Family. The song went on to win numerous awards, including being named Song of the Year at the 4th Annual Dove Awards in 1972. Ron and his brothers Kenny and Larry were recognized as some of the top writers in the industry and some of their other well known songs included “He Pilots My Ship,” “Two Winning Hands, ” “Touch of the Master's Strong Hand, ” “Mercy Built A Bridge, ” and “I'll Never Be Over the Hill. ” The Hinsons stopped performing together after more than three decades in May 1988 to pursue individual careers and ministries. The original members of The Hinsons performed together one last time in 1995 at the funeral of Kenny, who died of cancer at age 41.

John T. Benson III’s contributions to the music business began in the 1970s, but his family’s legacy preceded him and in many ways predicted his own destiny. Benson’s grandfather, John T., founded The Benson Publishing Company in 1902 to primarily publish hymnbooks. John T. Jr. followed as president of the publishing company after the senior Benson’s death in 1931 and with another son, Bob, founded the Heartwarming label in 1960 as a record company that would help to popularize the Benson Company’s existing copyrights and to develop new songwriters. Benson III, after a successful career in the family’s other business, a commercial printing company, joined his brother Bob in 1969, first as vice president and later as president, and with his brother, served the company during its most flourishing years when the Jesus Movement brought new attention and success to contemporary Chrisitan music. Benson III also played a key role in leading the gospel music industry as a member of the GMA Board of Directors, serving as treasure and a two-year term as president of the GMA in 1978-80, during which time, the GMA established its now annual GMA Music Week convention. Benson has been married to his wife Jane for nearly 60 years and has four children, six grandchildren and one great grandchild. They still live in the Nashville area.

7th Heaven Star, Beverley Mitchell, Visits Mercy Ministries

image
NASHVILLE, Tenn.— Beverley Mitchell, who stars as Lucy Camden in the CW’s hit series, 7th Heaven, visited Mercy Ministries in Nashville, Tennessee, on Sunday, November 5, 2006. Beverley and her fiancé, Michael, took pizza to the home and watched the newest episode of 7th Heaven with the girls. After the show, Beverley spent the evening signing posters for each girl, answering questions about the show and taking pictures with each one.

“Before Beverley Mitchell visited, I would watch 7th Heaven with my step-mom and it brought us so much closer as a family. Getting to visit with her in person was such a blessing and brought back good memories,” stated Kristi Milton, a resident of Mercy Ministries.

Beverley has been in Nashville working on her self-titled debut country album. The recording will include the song “Angel,” which was featured on the November 5th episode of 7th Heaven. Beverley shared with the girls the emotional story behind what inspired her to write “Angel.” She explained that it was written after the death of her best friend when she was a teenager. At that tragic moment, she realized that she faced the decision of either drawing closer to God or turning away from Him.

Christina Garcia, another resident of Mercy Ministries added, “Beverley Mitchell really touched my heart by coming to hang out and watch 7th Heaven with us. It was so moving to hear her explanation of the song ‘Angel’ that she sang on the show. She gave me so much inspiration and confidence. I now know that when I go through bad situations, they can turn out good.”

Mercy Ministries is a free residential program for young women between the ages of 13-28, who are dealing with any number of life-controlling issues. For more information about Mercy Ministries, visit http://www.mercyministries.org .

Beverley Mitchell is set to release January 23, 2007, and will be distributed through New Day Christian Distribution and Word Entertainment/WEA. We want to show everyone that we can sing different styles of music but still make it ‘Dove Brothers’… we did just that.”

The single “I Can Pray” will be featured on the album and the Doves have been so touched by the message of this Nathan Markee tune that they are adopting the theme “I Can Pray” for their upcoming tour in 2007. McCray Dove added, “Someone who hears the message in “I Can Pray” may be driving down the road at life’s end. They could be depressed, hurting, worried about their family, worried about soldiers over seas, lost loved ones, just lost their job, or have someone sick or dying, etc. This song will minister to them and remind them that there is still power in prayer.”

Charlotte Ritchie Receives Charting Success On Southern Gospel & Inspirational Charts

image
Nashville, TN - RSI Music recording artist, Charlotte Ritchie is enjoying quite a bit of success on radio stations in the Southern Gospel market, as well as the Inspirational market. Recently, RSI released Ritchie’s song, “Boomerang,” which was written by the brother/sister songwriting team of Ben and Sonya Isaacs (The Isaacs) to Southern Gospel radio stations nationwide. The single marked the third release from Ritchie’s Closer recording. Ritchie, who regularly travels with popular Southern Gospel recording artist Jeff & Sheri Easter, enjoyed a tremendous amount of success on Southern Gospel radio with her debut release, “Draw Me Closer,” which became her first Top 40 hit. The talented vocalist’s latest single, “Boomerang” appears to be heading in that same direction, as the song debuted on The Singing News Magazine’s Top 80 Chart at #78 in October, and in November, the song jumped to #42.

In an effort to capitalize on the diversity of the recording, RSI President, Bob Rodgers decided to release another song from the project to Inspirational radio. “We felt this recording had a tremendous potential to reach a very broad audience,” Rodgers stated, “so we released singles to the Southern Gospel market, as well as the Inspirational market. It appears we were correct in our thinking.” According to Christian Radio Weekly’s Inspirational Chart, Ritchie’s Inspirational single, “You Are With Me” has reached the Top 20, climbing to #15 this week.
