Rayburn wins Dottie Rambo Songwriting Contest

LOGAN, W.Va. - (05/24/06) - Hundreds of Gospel music lovers in the Mountain State attended several musical events during Dottie Rambo Weekend, held last in Logan, W.Va. — all for a good cause.

Dignity Hospice, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, wrapped up fundraising events from this past weekend with legendary singer/songwriter Dottie Rambo.

Mike Collins, public relations coordinator for Dignity Hospice, recently spoke about Ms. Rambo and the fundraiser. “It has been a tremendous weekend and Logan County has fallen in love with Dottie Rambo,” he said Thursday. “We had a little more than sixty people attend the songwriters seminar, held Friday night at the Savas-Kostas Theater of Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College. From what we hear, that is higher than the national average of such songwriting seminars in bigger cities. Then, Saturday night we had more than seven hundred in attendance for the concert at the Coalfield Jamboree.”

The winner of the Dottie Rambo Songwriter’s Contest was also revealed at Friday’s seminar. Debbie Rayburn, of Charleston, W.Va., won the contest with her song, entitled, “It Could Have Been Me.” Debbie then opened for Ms. Rambo on Saturday and will now have an opportunity to pitch her songs to Daywind Records, in Nashville, TN, in the near future.

The money raised during these events will go toward paying for hospice services for residents of Logan, Mingo, Lincoln, Boone and Wayne counties who don’t have Medicaid, or an insurance policy covering hospice care.

“This money will pay for various services, medications and equipment for many patients who are in need,” Collins said. “These events have made it possible for Dignity Hospice to keep our patient’s pain free, comfortable and in the care of their families at home.”

Old Paths Added as Featured Performer for the 2006 Diamond Awards

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Allen Smith of SGN Scoops Magazine, home of the Diamond Awards, is proud to announce that Old Paths have been confirmed as a featured performer for the 2006 Diamond Awards.

Old Paths is a full-time Southern Gospel music ministry based just outside of Atlanta in Oxford, Georgia. From the pure high sound of Jeff’s tenor voice, the rich, strong lead voice of Tim, and the joyful and heartfelt baritone voice of Doug, God has uniquely woven these three men together for the sole purpose of encouraging, enriching and enlightening the hearts and lives of those who have been and will be touched by their ministry. From the beginning, Old Paths has been a successful trio. However, Brandon Barry from Chattanooga, Tennessee has joined the group singing bass. He is an incredible talent that can hit all those real low notes. Brandon also has a heart for God, and he has a true passion for singing southern gospel music. This official makes Old Paths a quartet.

Although their ministry is music, they are not limited to just singing. Doug is a preacher, bringing the lost to Christ through his powerful testimony. Tim is a student of the word, having attended Tennessee Temple University. Jeff is an expressive story teller in song who attended Crown College. It’s obvious to anyone who hears these men that their main focus is seeing souls saved. They are not just southern gospel singers, but they are singing the gospel. The group has been successful with their music to radio, with their first single release, “The Fire Still Burns”, climbing the Singing News music charts to # 24. Their newest release, “I’ve Missed Out”, is currently at # 37.

Performing along with Old Paths during the awards program will be Brian Free & Assurance, Ann Downing, the Browns, the Hinsons, Big Mo, the Goldens, Lori (daughter of Anthony Burger), and the Wills. More performers will be announced at a later date.

The Diamond Awards are held every September during the week of the National Quartet Convention in Louisville, Kentucky. This year’s Diamond Awards will take place on Friday, September 15th, 2006 in the Scot Room of the Executive Inn West at the entrance of the Kentucky Fair and Expo Center in Louisville, KY.

Eric returned to the Dove Brothers this past April. Friend of the Dove Brothers Quartet, Lance Jeffrey had been filling in for Dove during his time off the road, and it earned Jeffrey a Top 10 nomination for Horizon Individual in the 2006 Singing News Fan Awards.

“Our fans not only supported Eric, but they really opened their arms and accepted Lance like he had been with the Dove Brothers for years,” mentioned McCray. “We have the best fans in the whole wide world, and we appreciate their support during this time. Thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts.”

Lance will be returning to school this fall to finish up his degree in Music.

In addition, the Dove Brothers Quartet will be returning to the studio to record two brand new projects, the group’s first since the release of their critically acclaimed release, Anything But Ordinary…Everything But Typical.

The first recording, scheduled to be recorded in early June, will feature concert favorites from the group such as “The Potter’s Clay,” “Look for Me at the Feet of Jesus,” “Oh What a Savior” and many more. The second album will be their new studio release from Crossroads Music’s Sonlite Records. The group is currently selecting songs for the new album to be recorded this coming July.

Dove Brothers Quartet’s last single, “Anything But Ordinary, Everything But Typical,” made its mark on Southern Gospel radio all across the country, including ranking in the Top 10 of the Singing News Top 80 – a first for the Dove Brothers Quartet since 2000’s “Get Away Jordan”. The group’s current single is “Just Imagine That.”

Urgent Prayer Request from The Ruppes

URGENT PRAYER REQUEST

Statement from Heather Day and Valerie Ellenburg of The Ruppes and Kim Lord of LordSong:

Yesterday, May 16, 2006, we found out that our dad, Leo Ruppe, has a malignancy in his mouth. He underwent the first round of tests including biopsy, CT scan, blood tests, etc. Now we are waiting for the pathology report and the scan reading. Test results will help determine the course of treatment and/or surgery. We are asking all of you to lift Dad up in prayer and for all of us to pray in one accord for his healing. Dad asks that we all claim Mark 11:24 on his behalf ("Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them").

His faith is strong, but your prayers and words of encouragement and faith will bless and strengthen him in his days ahead. We believe in miracles, and we are asking all of you to stand with us as we claim God's healing for our dad.

Leo & Brenda Ruppe started the ministry of The Ruppes 32 years ago (1974) with daughters Kim and Heather. Youngest daughter Valerie joined the Ruppes as a teenager. The Ruppes' ministry has blessed thousands over the years with songs like "Under His Wings" and "Angels In the Room." Leo has been The Ruppes' manager, bus driver, and sound man for the entire 32 years.

Dad's proclamation to the doctor is "By His stripes, I am healed!"

It's very timely that The Ruppes' newest radio released is a song called "The Healer" - which have lyrics that proclaim that very same scripture.

Send any words of encouragement to (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or Leo Ruppe c/o Heather Day, 10 Pleasant Knoll Lane, Greer, SC 29651

We will keep you informed as we know more. Thank you in advance for your prayers.

A major outreach to the church will be made by the NQC this year. There is a section on the NQC web-site that makes the process of organizing a church group very easy. All of the information, instructions and group discount information is available in the section labeled, “How to Organize a Church Group,” on the NQC home page.

The NQC has made the strategic decision to gear our day of greatest attendance, Friday, specifically toward the church. Not only will Brooklyn Tabernacle be featured, but there will also be a seminar lead by Dr. David Jeremiah as well as a Choral Extravaganza lead by Mike Speck. This is a lineup that should excite and motivate all involved with church music and church ministry in general. The presentations are stylistically diverse enough to appeal to every demographic within the church with lyrics containing a constant, clear, straightforward and forthright presentation of the Gospel and Biblical truths.

GADSDEN, Alab. – Gold City, Southern Gospel music’s premier male quartet, is proud to announce the addition of Aaron McCune to the group. Aaron McCune will be filling the bass vocalist position in the group left vacant by Bill Lawrence earlier this year.

McCune has been singing and recording with Palmetto State Quartet since September of 2003, and he was a long time member of the Anchormen previous to joining Palmetto State Quartet. McCune started singing bass at the age of 14 and has also previously sang with the Journeymen and the Nobelmen Quartet.

“We are very excited about Aaron joining Gold City,” mentioned Daniel Riley, baritone and manager for Gold City. “We see large amounts of potential in Aaron and firmly believe that he will go down in history as one of Southern Gospel’s strongest bass singers.”

Aaron McCune stated, “I am so enthusiastic about joining such an elite and outstanding group as Gold City. My time with Palmetto State was invaluable to me as a singer and Christian, and I can not thank them enough for affording me the opportunity of singing with such a great group of guys. Now, I am excited to see what God has in store for me as a part of Gold City.”

Founder and now retired member of Gold City, Tim Riley, has been filling in for Gold City since Lawrence’s departure this past March. McCune will officially hit the road with Gold City starting in early June.

“Words can not express how grateful I am to my father for coming out of retirement for these past couple of months and helping us out,” remarked Daniel Riley. “He was very patient with us while we took our time in finding the right fit for the group. We couldn’t thank him enough.”

Aaron will be joining Gold City on the group’s new recording due out later this year. It will be the first recording for the group since signing with New Haven Records last year. The new album is being produced by industry leaders Michael Sykes and Michael English, and it promises to be a career recording for the group.

God’s Got a Plan On New Vertical Praise Recording

image
NORTH GARDEN, Virginia – Vertical Praise, an up and coming talent in Southern Gospel, recently released their sophomore recording. Entitled God’s Got a Plan, the new album was recorded in Nashville, TN last fall. The new recording was produced by Donna Beauvais (of Hope’s Call), engineered by Jon Mitchell, and mixed by Joel Carrell.

God’s Got a Plan features brand new songs as well as concert favorites from the group. Some of the industry’s most sought after songwriters contributed songs for the recording, including producer Donna Beauvais, Rebecca J. Peck, Chris Binion, Daryl Williams, Twila McBride-LaBar, and more.

The recording featured the instrumental talents of David Huntsinger, Robb Tripp, Marty Schrabel, Jeff King, and Andy Leftwich, and tracks were recorded at TMC Studios in Hendersonville, Tennessee, while vocals were recorded at Daywind Studios, Hendersonville, Tennessee.

“Tony, Holly, and Eddie are just amazing people,” responded Donna Beauvais, producer of God’s Got a Plan. “They worked so hard in and out of the studio and really made a great project! God is going to move mightily by the words in these songs, but more importantly, by the willingness of Vertical Praise to minister to those who are hurting and who need this message of hope!”

“Vertical Praise has really outdone themselves on this new recording,” mentioned Deon Unthank of SouthernGospelNews.com. “They have stretched themselves vocally and musically, and I am really excited to see where God takes them with this new release.”

Vertical Praise’s first single from the new album is the title cut, “God’s Got a Plan,” which was written by Rebecca J. Peck. The song is being promoted to Southern Gospel radio by Jeff O’Neil and Heritage Communications. The song can be found on the Heritage Gold 2006 Vol. 2 compilation disc, cut #10.

The group’s debut single, “With My Own Eyes,” peaked at #47 on the Singing News Top 80 for the March 2006 chart. The song is from their debut album, Heaven’s Song.

Tony Hensley of Vertical Praise said, “We were totally shocked when we heard the news! Jeff O'Neal had told us he was pretty sure it would make the Top 80, but we were thinking #79 or #80 at best. So, when we heard our first song ever released to national radio was debuting on the SN Top 80 at #47, all we could do was praise God! He has truly been blessing us this year.”

The Best of Anthony Burger Tops Billboard’s Music Video Charts

Nashville, TN (5-5-06) -- The last project completed by pianist Anthony Burger, The Best of Anthony Burger, released on both DVD and CD by Gaither Music Group, topped the Billboard Music Video chart this week, with sales in excess of 13,000 units. The CD of the same title also topped the Southern Gospel chart, held the #3 position on the Contemporary Christian Top 100 chart and was at #65 on the Top 200 chart, with sales of 13,756 units.

The Best of Anthony Burger, hosted by gospel legend Bill Gaither, is a compilation of Burger's most outstanding performances from a decade of Gaither Homecoming videos and television specials, as well as behind-the-scene interviews concerning his career, family and faith. Burger tragically passed away February 22 while performing on a Gaither Homecoming cruise in the Caribbean. The video had already been completed at the time of Burger's untimely death and became a celebration of his life and music.

"Last summer when we captured this wonderful interview footage with Anthony to accompany a compilation of his most memorable performances from the video series, we had no idea that this project's April release would memorialize his life," offered Bill Gaither. "What we planned and what God planned were two different things. The result is a project I hope will serve as a tremendous instrument of healing as we remember the music of Anthony's life and the impact he had on so many of us."

Crabb Family Join 220,000 Moroccans in Marrakech for Music Festival

To Celebrate Friendship and Community with Americans

Marrakech, Morocco; May 9, 2006 - On three picture-perfect evenings in an open field just outside the stone walls of the ancient city of Marrakech, Morocco, American and Moroccan musicians shared center stage over the weekend in a musical event to celebrate friendship and peace between the two cultures. Dubbed "Friendship Fest 2006", the event was hailed as a testament to religious tolerance and mutual respect among people of vastly different cultures. Moroccan security officials estimated the crowds to be 220,000 over the three nights of the event.

Originally conceived in 2004 following an invitation by Marrakech Regional President Abdelali Doumou, and with the full support of the Moroccan Wali (Governor), to bring a festival of music to his region, American music promoters Harry Thomas and Tim Landis put together a lineup of seven contemporary Christian music artists including: The Crabb Family, Jaci Velasquez, KJ-52, Joy Williams, downhere, George Huff and Ashley Cleveland. Each artist donated their labor and that of their production teams, to make the event happen. The American artists were joined onstage by a number of contemporary and traditional Moroccan music artists during the 18 hours of the music festival. Production costs of the event, which was free to all attendees, were offset by private contributions in the United Stares and corporate sponsorships in Morocco.

Friendship Fest 2006 was the second such event, capitalizing on the success of the music festival that captured the world's attention in 2005. The first Friendship Fest, held in Marrakech in May of last year, attracted 85,000.

Regional President Doumou hailed the festival, which is breaking new ground in the Arab world, as a resounding success. "We were delighted and honored when my good friend Harry Thomas accepted our invitation to come to back Marrakech to join with us in celebration of our long-standing friendship with the people of the United States. Over the past three days, we have seen music unite our people and cultures in a way that is both gratifying and encouraging for future cultural and economic exchanges. From the size of the crowds, and their positive reaction, it was obvious to me that our people were very grateful to receive this gift of beautiful music."

Landis agreed, stating: "We were simply overwhelmed by the warmth of the reception we received from the Moroccan people. Each of the artists performing at the event had stories of new relationships that were developed as a result of Friendship Fest. Those in attendance truly encouraged us with their heartfelt and enthusiastic support."

On Saturday night at the festival, a crowd of over 100,000 heard The Crabb Family open and close its performance with a song written especially for Friendship Fest. Sung entirely in Arabic, the tight harmonies of "May God's Peace Be With You" resonated throughout the crowd, and were echoed back to the stage by the crowd. Later in the set, Adam Crabb silenced the audience with his spellbinding, soulful rendition of "Amazing Grace" on harmonica. Following their performance, Crabb gave his harmonica to a young Moroccan, asking only that he use it to make beautiful music. Said Crabb, "This was one of the most incredible evenings of my life."

Canadian rockers "downhere" appeared at the Festival on Friday and Sunday nights, performing songs from their upcoming new album. downhere's front man Marc Martel, a native French Canadian, spoke to the crowd in French (one of Morocco's two official languages) between songs. Martel commented: "The Moroccan people seemed to have a real heart for music. Despite their lack of familiarity with our music, they were eager to dance and sing along. It was a privilege to perform for them. They rocked."

Offstage, the American artists found ample time for formal and informal cultural exchanges with the people of Morocco on a more personal level - ranging from friendships formed with merchants in the Berber markets (resulting in invitations to share tea), to more in-depth dialogues with the political and economic leaders of the region. These opportunities were not limited to the city of Marrakech (population: 900,000), but extended into more remote regions, enabling the artists to both gain a broader view of Morocco and to become known by those who could not attend the festival. On Wednesday afternoon, three of the artists traveled to a rural village in the Atlas mountains, where they were welcomed with Moroccan music and dance, and where the Americans performed an impromptu concert of their music, using the few instruments they had brought with them, and improvising with percussion instruments borrowed from the villagers. That night, Marrakech regional president Abdelai Doumou hosted a formal dinner with Moroccan officials welcoming the American delegation to Morocco. A similar reception was hosted by the Wali on Sunday afternoon. On Saturday, members of the band "downhere" joined President Doumou for an informal discussion with the mayor of Marrakech, a delegation of local businesspeople and a member of Moroccan Parliament - a dialogue that lasted to the wee hours of Sunday morning.

American contemporary Christian artist Joy Williams was the only artist to have appeared at Friendship Fest in both 2005 and 2006. "I was thrilled and honored to be invited back to Morocco to perform for these hospitable and giving people", said Williams. "It was truly a gift to be embraced again so warmly by the people of Marrakech. They have truly touched my heart in a way that I will never forget."

Set on a sandy field in the Bab Ighli section of the city, the festival began each of the three nights at 6:00PM local time. By the time the dessert sun had begun to set an hour or so later, tens of thousands of Moroccans had jammed the venue to see American artists perform alongside some of their favorite Moroccan musicians. Thousands more viewed from a distance with the aid of two large video screens and a state-of-the-art sound system. The crowd was animated and enthusiastic, responding to invitations to dance, jump and even sing along. "The only thing that was translated were the introductions of the performers", said Thomas. "The universal language of music translated itself."

The purpose of Friendship Fest according to festival organizers was to "use the universal language of music to bridge cultures and make friends - to show that people of different cultures and faith traditions can be friends and live in harmony with one another." When asked for his view regarding whether or not these goals were achieved, Regional President Doumou responded: "The goals of Friendship Fest were most definitely achieved. We strengthened our relations with our American brothers and sisters and set the stage for ongoing discussions and future cultural exchanges between our countries. We truly believe that this event represents an historic opportunity for Americans and Moroccans to celebrate together, through music, in friendship and peace."

He was a stylist - you always knew when it was him playing - and of all the great southern gospel stylists I've admired over the years, he was the showman of the bunch. I always admired him from a distance and I enjoyed every chance I had to work with him. No one will ever replace Anthony Burger. But I am honored to even be considered for the role he filled so well for so many years.”

Gordon Mote has traveled with a long list of country music greats including Lee Greenwood, Tanya Tucker and Trisha Yearwood, and appeared as a regular with Porter Wagoner on the Grand Ole Opry. Today, Gordon is considered one of Nashville's premier session players and he can be heard on albums by such acclaimed entertainers as Martina McBride, Randy Travis, Julie Roberts, The Gaither Vocal Band, Karen Peck and New River, and among many others.

From the Gaither press information: Bill and Gloria, along with the entire Homecoming family, are thankful for all that Gordon brings to the tour and most especially for his great heart. After a tragic and painful loss, the tour will go on and will honor the tradition of excellence for which Anthony Burger will always be remembered.

Gordon Mote joined the tour, full time, last night in Syracuse, New York.

Established in 1952 and proclaimed by President Bush and the governors of all 50 states, the National Day of Prayer, whose 2006 theme was America, Honor God, is held the first Thursday in May each year. MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Vocalive.com won its first ever SGN Music Award last week at the 2006 SGN Music Awards Celebration. The popular interactive website was awarded Best Artist/Industry Website at the special awards program on Tuesday evening, April 25, 2006 in Smryna, Tennessee.
