New Ground - Oct 2003

New Ground
Hi Everyone,

It's been a hectic September 2003 for New Ground - but we wouldn't have it any other way - on the road - singing for Him - what an awesome calling!! We are so blessed.

We started out the month with David's former classmates - yep, David did graduate in the 80's and some of them still admit that they remember him - LOL. We were at the First United Methodist Church in Albertville, AL where we enjoyed a dinner and then we were the special guests of the Sunday School Class. Singing and eating - they seem to go hand in hand. David really enjoyed seeing his "old" classmates (Sorry Carrie) - just kidding - what I would give to be 35 again. Then we were off to Nettleton, Mississippi and Ardmore, AL. This was our weekend that we were working our way to NQC. Robbie Strawbridge and congregation at the Victory Baptist Church in Nettleton and Mike Clark and his congregation from Mable Hill Baptist in Ardmore helped to encourage our spirit for our long week away from home in Louisville. Needless to say - we had great services at both churches and we were ready for NQC.

We got into Louisville about midnight on Sunday night and had to be at a Paul Heil Interview at 9:30am - it was good to sit and talk with Paul and Shelia - so be listening for our interview in the near future. Then it was off to the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center - as we appeared on the Artist Spotlight Showcase. There were about 20 groups that sang a showcase on that Monday afternoon and everyone had a great time kicking the week's activities off. The rest of the week was spent working the booth and attending meetings and talking to everyone and getting new songs and meeting friends from the list and eating and .. well, you know the rest of the story.

We left NQC on Saturday morning because we had to sing our way home. Our first singing brought us back to our hometown of Scottsboro where we sang at the Ridgedale Baptist Church. Our friends, Southern Image, from Tupelo, Mississippi also sang and did a great job. They are some of the best friends we have in the industry. We love these guys and their spirit. Sunday morning found us in Ooltewah, Tennessee for Homecoming at the Ooltewah Church of God. This is our third time to sing for Pastor Stallings and his congregation - these people love Sand Mountain Singing - considering they are from Sand Mountain probably has a lot to do with it. We loaded up and headed to Summerville, Georgia with Mr. Bobby Groce and everyone at the West Summerville Baptist Church. We were so blessed to have our friends, Jessie, Verlene, Wallace, Ressie, Lou and Ethel to visit with us - they are just our extended family. Uncle Wallace brought Chow-Chow - it was soooo good and we are waiting on our fruit salad from Aunt Jessie - can these people cook - you better believe it!!! Also, we saw Gene & Glenda Norris and Mr. & Mrs. Hoyt Cox. These are some of our friends that we have met through Jim Hefner - I'm glad to call them "our" friends.

After recouping for a couple of days it was onto Alabaster, Alabama to the Southside Baptist Church. This church has the sweetest spirit and some of the best homemade spaghetti sauce you have ever eaten. They were so receptive and we surely appreciated meeting each of them. Bessemer Church of the Nazarene had us as their guests on Sunday morning. Pastor Ron and his church family were so cordial and accommodating. Matter of fact, they even called a special meeting while we were tearing down and voted to have us next year for their Homecoming - I told you it was a great church!! We ended the weekend at the Bethlehem Baptist Church in Laceys Spring, Alabama. David was the Music Minister at this church when he first started singing with New Ground. It was like old times - he was hugging and smiling and even his wife Stacy and children Brandon, Chelsea and Celeste were able to attend this Homecoming with him.

As we finished the month on a trip to Cape Girardeau, Missouri - we met lots of new people. We sang for Gene & Ann Young at the A.C. Brase Auditorium there in Cape Girardeau with Michael Combs. This was a great concert and we also got to meet Pastor John Archie from the Elm Street Baptist Church in Charleston, Missouri. He took us out to eat and then booked us for his church in November. So we thank the Young's for giving us this opportunity to take our ministry into new areas. We loaded up and headed for Pulaski, Tennessee for a great night of gospel singing held at the Parks and Recreation Center. Mack Thomas and Shelia Holden worked to put this singing together. It was a great night of good fellowship and singing. We finished the month in Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee at the Living Waters Church of God. Pastor Jason Mize welcomed us with open arms and this was an awesome singing to finish the month.

Make sure that you come and see us in October. We will be in South Carolina, Mississippi, Tennessee and Alabama!!! Love to see you!!

Until He Comes,

Robbie Maxwell

Southern Harmony - Oct 2003

Southern Harmony
Hi Everyone!

First of all I want to welcome you all to our first official article on SoGospelNews.com. What an awesome and informative website it is, and we are grateful to have this opportunity to share moments from our time on the road and of our ministry with you every month. Let me begin by introducing the group to you. We are Southern Harmony, a family group, based out of the big town of Vincent, Alabama. The group consists of Don Garrett, Dana Lewis, Terri Garrett, and myself Carrie Stewart. We sing a variety of styles of southern gospel music, but our two latest singles, "Long As I've Got King Jesus" and "I Can Go To God In Prayer" highlight our Pentecostal roots. Our goal in the ministry is to see souls saved and brought to the knowledge of the love and the grace that God has to offer them. We also strive to encourage individuals who may be facing seemingly impossible situations. We love sharing the gospel through song to the world and hope to see you at one of our concerts. Speaking of concerts, the concert of all concerts was held in Louisville, Kentucky just a couple of weeks ago. The National Quartet Convention is always a great week for southern gospel fans to meet and hear some of their favorite gospel groups perform.

Southern Harmony has attended many of the conventions over the years, but this year has proved to be a good year for the group. We sang on the Lighthouse promotions showcase, and received a good response. It was wonderful to hear so many great comments on the song, "Long As I've Got King Jesus", and how people are hearing it all over the country. It was so funny to hear the pastors, DJs, promoters and everyone talk about how this song makes them want to get up and move. I was even told that it was a good "house cleaning" song! Hmmm, maybe I should try that one myself. But overall, we enjoyed meeting everyone one of you who came by our booth. And if you were unable to be at the quartet convention, try to make plans to attend next year, I know that you would enjoy it thoroughly. Well, I've got to go for this month, but check out our website (southernharmonyonline.net) and our schedule and hopefully we will be in your area soon. If we are, come see us, I know we would love to see you! And remember, as long you've got King Jesus, you don't need nobody else! Until next month!

Southern Sound Qt - Oct 2003

Southern Sound Qt
September was a grueling month for Southern Sound. We sang at the Southern Gospel Quartet Reunion in Henderson, KY and then went straight to Louisville for the National Quartet Convention. Of course, NQC is the highlight of the year for us, but it is exhausting. I broke my diet on the waffle cones, but all and all I had a great time. Many old friends, who we don't see nearly often enough, we are able to spend time with during NQC. We also did several radio interviews, one of special note. Deon asked us the one question we certainly have never been asked before, "Beside Jesus Christ, who was your action figure hero when growing up?" That threw us all a curve, but after some thought, I said mine was Roy Rogers. Keith's was the Lone Ranger, and Roger's was Mighty Mouse. Roger is our tenor, which kind of figures doesn't it? Everyone got a laugh at that. The rest of the week all of our guys went around singing "Here I come to save the day" to Roger.

We also appeared on the Zion Showcase on Friday of NQC week, and as usual it was a blessing. What can I say; the Zion family loves to have Church!

We just returned from a trip through Florida where we sing at the Lake Gibson Church of the Nazarene in Lakeland, FL. What a joy it was to be with Pastor Kirby and the folks there. This is one very fine church and great stronghold for Southern Gospel Music. I wish we had many more like it. Thank you Dr. Kirby. We look forward to being with you again soon. Mr. Arnold Godwin, author of several of the songs we recently recorded, attended the singing too. We later had dinner with our good friends from Golden Street Music, John and Nita Wombles, their daughter Wendy and son-in-law Troy. What great Christian people these folks are.

Southern Sound will be hosting our own annual Homecoming on October the 25th at Fohs Hall Auditorium in Marion, KY at 6:30pm. Our featured guests this year will be the Childress Family from Madisonville, KY. These are fine folks who sing great and love the Lord. You will not hear a better vocal group or more spiritual singers than the Childress Family. You don't want to miss them! As many have said before, it's real hard to beat that tight family harmony.

Our new recording on ZION, "One Voice" is out and available now! For the dates where Southern Sound will be appearing, please log onto our web site. While you're there don't forget to sign our guest book.

Southern Sound - Our Ducks are in a Row

Southern Sound Qt
Hello everyone! August was a very busy month for SSQ. We appeared on the Charlie Waller's Grand Ole Gospel Reunion in Greenville, SC, and it was so much fun. We are looking forward to going again next year.

As I write this article we are getting our ducks in a row for the National Quartet Reunion. Getting our booth together, confirming hotel rooms, and just dotting every "i" and crossing every "t". We will be in booth 345 again this year, and would love for everyone to drop by and say hello to all of us. We will be singing again this year on the Zion Showcase. This event will be held at the Executive Inn West at 1:30pm on Friday of NQC week.

We are hoping to have our new ZION CD, "One Voice" back in time for NQC. We are running tight on time, but I am optimistic that the Zion folks can pull off a miracle. At least the pressure is on! I really believe this is our best effort to date. We hope all you folks will enjoy it.

Also want to let you know about an event our friends Stillwater Quartet from Hopkinsville, KY is hosting. We will be at their homecoming on September 5th held at Calvary Memorial Baptist Church in Hopkinsville, along with the Perry's. Be sure and plan to attend. September the 6th we will again be in Henderson, KY for the annual Southern Gospel Quartet Reunion held again this year in the Fine Arts Center. On the program will be The Conquerors, The Childress Family, Gateway Trio, The Haire Family, The Vocalystics, River City Quartet, The Southlanders and Southern Sound. It is always a lot of fun. The singing starts at 2:00 pm sharp and goes till 9:00 pm that evening. Empty seats have been rare the last few years so come early!

Southern Sound will be hosting our own annual Homecoming on October the 5th at Fohs Hall Auditorioum in Marion, KY. Our featured guests this year will be the Childress Family from Madisonville, KY. These are fine folks who sing great and love the Lord. As many have said before, it's real hard to beat that tight family harmony. The Dunaways - September Brings Mixed Feelings - Sep 2003

The Dunaways
September brings mixed feeling for me. It's the month for NQC and that is a good exciting thing. Then there's the hope of cooler weather and in Mississippi that is a good and exciting thing. But this month will bring me something else. Black Balloons. Yes this is the year and the month that I will turn 40. I cannot believe it! They say a women doesn't tell her age but I am very proud to have made it this far and it is truly the best days of my life.

Our booth number is # 691 so come on by and chat with us if you get a chance. We love to meet new people and see our old friends as well. You can catch us on the NQC artist spotlight showcase on Tuesday in the South Wing.

Thanks to all the stations that have added our new single "Beautiful Day" and for your response to " With His Arms Wide Open."

A few months back I mentioned the motorhome that we had bought and it really met our needs except for the bouncing while trying to sleep. We have been able to trade it for a bus and that was just the Lord. The bus is more comfortable and we are so thankful.

God is so good to us and we are so undeserving of his grace and mercy for our spiritual lives. Neither do we deserve the blessings he gives us everyday for our physical existence.

May the Lord bless each of you and if you are heading to Louisville we will see you there!

Until Next Month!
